Do you think as Camilla as the queen ?

Hear me out , I have no problem with Camilla and never thought I would never see her as ( way back when ) as Charles wife when they married , my opinion, was they married and can rightly call herself as Duchess.
However , what I don't understand that when Queen Elizabeth was alive , her husband , Prince Phillip was always known as just that and never seen / addressed as King . Why is Camilla our queen when Phillip was never our king ? I'm confused .

Yes

The king is dead. Long live the king etc

Imperrysmum · 09/11/2024 21:59

Absolutely not. I think of her as a mistress who has managed to be in a place where she is called Queen, but has 0 qualities that make me admire or respect her

King or Queen aren't about admiration or respect, they just are. That's the point, we don't get to choose. The monarch is the monarch by accident of birth, and if they're male then their wife is Queen. It doesn't matter if you like them or not. We don't get a say.

If you think there are qualities that mean someone isn't fit to be king or queen then you don't believe in a monarchy.

I think of Trump as an orange idiot and so I refuse to think of him as President of the USA.
There. That'll have changed how things really are.

RancidOldHag · 09/11/2024 22:08

@Needmorelego - they’ve just called them QAs at the Festival of Remembrance, so even though the change has been announced, it sounds as if it’s not quite taken effect yet

Edited to add; there were FANYs in the muster too

I think you misunderstood QE2.

When Charles and Camilla got engaged it was announced she would be known as Princess Consort when he became King - just as a sop to the public who were still unhappy with how they got together. She would automatically become Queen but she wouldn't use the title, just like she became Princess of Wales on her marriage but never used the title (who can blame her) and used the lower title Duchess of Cornwall instead.

Towards the end of her life, QE2 stated it was her wish that Camilla be known as the Queen Consort - this wasn't some lesser title, it was an endorsement of Camilla and a statement she should use the most senior title and be Queen.

Not monarch as she obviously could never be monarch since she married in. But the same sort of Queen as the majority of them through history.

I think a lot of people have been mistaken about QE2's statement. I agree 100%. It was a clear statement that Camilla would be queen because that's the way it works. The wife of the king is the queen. End of story. I also don't understand why people can't comprehend why Prince Phillip was not king. How can people have so little knowledge of how things have worked in our country for thousands of years?

Needmorelego · 09/11/2024 22:16

@RancidOldHag awesome !
I think being a "QA" sounds much more fancy.

You also have misunderstood the word consort! Camilla could never have been any other sort of queen .
Every queen consort including Camilla has been referred to as The Queen.

Queen consorts (Camilla) are the Queen, whereas Queen Regnants (Elizabeth) are The Queen.

Queens Consort and Queens Regnant I think rather than Queen Consorts. Like Courts Martial and Attorneys General rather than Court Martials and Attorney Generals

LaMarschallin · 09/11/2024 22:38

And, say, mothers in law.
The use of mother in laws and similar really grinds my pedantic gears.

I thought good point and had a google. Queens consort in plural apparently! Thank you.

Eh?

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 09/11/2024 22:46

No that's incorrect - Camilla is The Queen. Just like any other Queen Consort.

Cantsleepdontsleep · 09/11/2024 22:47

OnlyWhenILaugh · 09/11/2024 22:43

Eh?

Queen as an adjective (married in) or noun (birthright).

OnlyWhenILaugh · 09/11/2024 22:48

I dont think any queen gets a capital T unless at the start of a sentence. There are plenty of bbc articles referring to QE2 as the Queen. No capital T.

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 09/11/2024 22:49

I refer you to the website of the Royal Family:

I wouldn't expect the BBC to get things like that right, tbh!

Lots of people don't know the correct conventions.

There are capital letters galore 🤣
But there's no difference in capitalisation for consort vs regnant

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 09/11/2024 22:55

Catherine is also The Princess of Wales/The Princess. Sophie is The Duchess of Edinburgh/The Duchess. And so on, and so forth.

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 09/11/2024 22:55

I know. The Queen is The Queen - Consort or not!

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 09/11/2024 22:57

(probably more correct to say Regnant or not!)

I've discussed this far too much longer than I thought I was going to tonight! 😄

Sorry @AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras I wasn't correcting you. I was thinking of the post that differentiated between the 2

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 09/11/2024 23:00

Ah no worries! I was just making sure I hadn't somehow said something I hadn't meant to say. It all sounds like gobbledegook the more times you say it. 😆

🤣 I know the word Queen looks completely wrong now I've seen it so often
