Hear me out , I have no problem with Camilla and never thought I would never see her as ( way back when ) as Charles wife when they married , my opinion, was they married and can rightly call herself as Duchess.
However , what I don't understand that when Queen Elizabeth was alive , her husband , Prince Phillip was always known as just that and never seen / addressed as King . Why is Camilla our queen when Phillip was never our king ? I'm confused .

I believe Military Nurses are still called "Queen Alexandra Nurses" as Alexandra was Queen when they were set up.
(any military folks here that can say if that's correct)

It was correct until about 2 weeks ago!

they have just been amalgamated in to the Royal Amy Medical Services (not sure if all the ceremonial and uniform changes have happened yet)

I can't say I think about her much at all but she is Queen consort, as was the old Queen Mother before her husband, the King, died. There's a programme about Camilla as Queen coming soon, maybe Monday, featuring her work with domestic abuse charity. It might be interesting, I often wonder what she actually does.

minerva7 · 09/11/2024 21:28

I do think of her as the queen, and think they make a lovely couple.

However... every time they mention the queen on the news I'm confused for a second as I'm thinking... 'she's dead how can she have a cold' you know? 🤣

As others have said, when I hear 'The Queen' I think of the late queen. When I hear 'Prince of Wales' I think Charles.

I don't have a problem with Camilla now, she has worked hard to make things work but old habits die hard and I still think of the Late Queen when anyone refers to The Queen.

Not to be too morbid, if Camilla outlives her husband, what would her title be. She couldn't be Queen Mother so what would she be?

According to Google, she’d be known as Queen Dowager. I guess a bit like how in Downton Abbey, Violet was known as Dowager Countess

She'll still most likely be referred to as Queen Camilla. Just not The Queen .

Needmorelego · 09/11/2024 21:32

@RancidOldHag oh I'm quite disappointed to hear that 🙁
The name sounded quite fancy.
I read a series of novels about a group of women who were VAD nurses working with QARNNS in the second world war.
(Voluntary Aid Detachment and Queen Alexandra's Royal Navy Nurses - have I got that right?)

The titles of women do not confer courtesy titles on their husbands whatever the rank.
It only works the other way round. The title of the man confers a courtesy title on his wife

Edited

Is that strictly true? IIRC Prince Philip had to renounce his born princely title(s?) in order to marry Elizabeth, and then the title of Prince was conferred on him again later by the Queen. Or have I got that wrong? 🤔

In any case that's different in Scandinavia. Prince Henrik of Denmark being one example, or Prince Daniel of Sweden; he will, of course, remain Prince when Victoria becomes Queen. I imagine if a man married a female heir to the throne of GB, or indeed a reigning Queen he would likely also be given the title of Prince when it became appropriate.

As I said, according to Google. It’s up to people how to address Camilla if Charles goes first, Queen Dowager is the proper title even if no one uses it. They probably didn’t with Queen Mary or Queen Alexandra

I think again that's really the title of the role or position rather than the title of the queen herself IYSWIM. Could be wrong though. I don't imagine Camilla would like that title, heh. I wouldn't, so I'd elect to just be called Queen X thank you!

I don't instinctively. I saw a headline that said queen the other day and thought of our late Queen Elizabeth II and assumed it was an old article resurfacing before I actually thought of Camilla.

I'm the same. If someone says 'the Queen' I think of 'The Queen' (Elizabeth) not Camilla.

Even though I know he's king, intellectually, I would instinctively still just call them 'Charles and Camilla' rather than 'The King and Queen'.

Sorry I don’t know about them, but FANYs still exist (now part of the TA - reserve type B so cannot be compulsorily called up, but are trained in the provision of emergency comms - I think they provided no-notice surge staff icw the late Queen’s funeral)

VisitationRights · 09/11/2024 21:40

No, I never think of her if I hear ‘the queen’ on the news or somewhere. But I have a hard time not thinking ‘prince Charles, I don’t think of him as king.’

FinneganFois · 09/11/2024 21:40

No certainly not, she was just camilla shand/duchessofcornwall (lol) doesn't deserve to be queen, no charm, boring, speaks as if she has a gob full of plums and apart from a very short stint as a temp, she has never worked. She is certainly of no constitutional importance.

Washingupdone · 09/11/2024 21:41

I still think of Queen Elizabeth 11 as The Queen when I hear it mentioned.

OnlyWhenILaugh · 09/11/2024 21:41

My understanding @AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras is that was more to do with him naturalising as British .
Prince Albert didn't renounce his titles on Marrying Victoria so I don't think it's a requirement.

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 09/11/2024 21:43

Ah that makes sense. Couldn't quite remember!

BarbaraHoward · 09/11/2024 21:49

I still think QE2 when I hear "The Queen", but that's just my brain catching up. It is of course right that the King's wife is Queen. What's wrong is that the Queen's husband has to settle for Prince when he should get King.

FagsMagsandBags · 09/11/2024 21:50

Out of no, well either respect or disrespect for her, she seems like one of the royals who pulls her weight, I find it hard to think of her as a queen because our old queen is so recently gone. If I hear, like this week that the queen won't be attending rememberance service tomorrow I have a moment akin to congnitive dissonance and get confused because "Er, she's dead." It's fleeting, far less than a second but it's been going on since she became queen. I have no doubt that I will get used to it.

To be fair I have the same feeling when they talk about the king and it's just because the old queen had such a long reign.

Needmorelego · 09/11/2024 21:51

@RancidOldHag if I've got my history correct VAD nurses were volunteer Red Cross Nurses.
In think in Downton Abbey when Sybil became a nurse she was a VAD.
FANY - oh what a name 😂
Another bit of WW2 history I've read is that women who were spies sent to France had to use "working as a FANY" as their cover story for family members/friends.
(not sure how true that is)

daffodilandtulip · 09/11/2024 21:52

If I see a photo of her, I don't go "eugh you're not the Queen", I know she is and I don't find anything wrong with it.

But if I just hear mention of "The Queen", Elizabeth II is who comes to mind.

Seasideresort · 09/11/2024 21:53

Absolutely not! Not my Queen.and never will be!

It totally throws me every time when the media talk about "The Queen". I naturally think of QE2.

DappledThings · 09/11/2024 21:54

It is both baffling and hilarious that there are still people out there convinced that Queen Consort is a title invented for Camilla and represents some kind of lesser kind of Queen that has been subsequently dropped. As opposed to being the title many Kings' wives have had previously and will also apply to Catherine and George's wife if he has one.

BarbaraHoward · 09/11/2024 21:57

ElvisNow · 09/11/2024 18:02

Camilla should never have been made Queen after our Monarch Queen Elizabeth II -HM recommended The Role Of Cosort and I think that was about right

I think you misunderstood QE2.

When Charles and Camilla got engaged it was announced she would be known as Princess Consort when he became King - just as a sop to the public who were still unhappy with how they got together. She would automatically become Queen but she wouldn't use the title, just like she became Princess of Wales on her marriage but never used the title (who can blame her) and used the lower title Duchess of Cornwall instead.

Towards the end of her life, QE2 stated it was her wish that Camilla be known as the Queen Consort - this wasn't some lesser title, it was an endorsement of Camilla and a statement she should use the most senior title and be Queen.

Not monarch as she obviously could never be monarch since she married in. But the same sort of Queen as the majority of them through history.

Edingril · 09/11/2024 21:58

He will always be Prince Charles to me, not that I have anything against him I just forget so I can't think of Camilla as Queen yet anyway
