Just looking at the photos of Harry in Lesotho . Don’t know when I last saw him looking so relaxed and happy .
Nice to see.

I just can't see Portugal being glamorous enough for them, if they were looking for a summer home in Europe, so I do wonder how much truth is in it, not many famous people to rub shoulders with, plus the language would be quite a barrier in Portugal.

Cote D'Azur I could see, it's a very glamorous lifestyle, F1, Cannes film festival, celeb galas, world famous restaurants. Plenty of celebs and high profile people own homes there, really strict privacy laws in France too. The Clooney's have apparently made a permanent move to the South of France, I think Elton lives most of the year there, during the summer months all the billionaires come and park their superyachts and entertain and of course lots of Russian oligarchs too.

They can’t compete with the Cloonys or Elton, or the billionaires, they couldn’t cope being the ‘poor’ relations, their egos couldn’t take it but in Portugal they can be big fishes in a small pond. If it’s true it’s a bizarre purchase, a bit nouveau riche, not a purchase I would associate with ‘royalty’ but then their fake Montecito McMansion fits that description as well so maybe that’s their type of property, give me Frogmore any day of the week.

Everything they buy and do screams nouveau riche, right down to how Meghan treats the staff. Being rude to servants was seen as a huge faux pas traditionally in Britian and would be pointed out as a sign of bad breeding, not being a true lady/gentleman etc and was absolutely not the Done Thing at all. It was a known common faux pas of people who had 'married up' (social climber).

BruFord · 18/10/2024 17:18

@BigWillyLittleTodger As @Twistybranch said, they probably got it at mate's rates from Eugenie's husband, because you're quite right, they can't compete with the billionaires. I still think it's not a bad idea as a bolt hole from the US and a potential source of rental income. Harry doesn't really have marketable skills, so he needs to generate cash through investments.

BigWillyLittleTodger · 18/10/2024 17:48

Yes @BruFord maybe it’s the start of a property portfolio and it’s not intended as a house for them but a lucrative rental so would provide good return on his investment, goodness Harry might be doing something sensible for once!

BruFord · 18/10/2024 18:01

@BigWillyLittleTodger It would be good if he's taking advice at last!

Mylovelygreendress · 18/10/2024 18:41

If they are going to rent it out ( and I hadn’t thought of that ) I wonder if Meghan will leave a welcome pack of jam and dog biscuits ?

It's the classic example of "1 rule of me and another for thee".

Same as him surfing in a wave pool. Those pools take a phenomenal amount of energy to run. He lives in California - he could have just gone to 1 of the many beaches to surf. Which makes me think this was a paid promo.

What I can’t fathom, if it is a paid promotion, why don’t we get a video of him face on? Or is he going for the media look he employs with his kids - the back of the head? I find the whole thing totally bizarre.

I wonder if it will have a monogrammed mat and Hermes blankets?

Maybe Harry is investing in assets outside the USA where Meghan would have no claim on them?

Hmm.. that’s an interesting thought.

CathyorClaire · 18/10/2024 20:49

No, apparently lots of A listers have bought properties in Portugal

We can only hope Harold's actually got built:

https://algarvedailynews.com/property-news/18551-british-tv-presenters-lose-millions-via-an-algarve-property-investment

Years of waiting for Great Gan-gan's trust fund to kick in and he appears to have lashed it on a nature trashing project despised by the locals and at the behest of a Tequila salesman and ruinously expensive inland surfing.

Arf.

Needanewname42 · 18/10/2024 20:49

I can't see them renting it out. Surely that would be a massive security risk?

@Needanewname42 If he isn’t planning on renting it out, it surely must be because he wants to spend less time in CA, I.e., his bolt hole.

Needanewname42 · 18/10/2024 21:09

Possibly bolt hole, Possibly financial investment.

But while I don't think there is a massive security risk for them to visit places that are already secure. Or for them to stay in hotels where nobody knows where they are planning to be.

I do think their is the odd nut case who would harm H and family. (Republicans, Queen supporters) renting out a property has potential risk for someone to do something nasty like interfere with electrics.
I don't think any royal properties are ever rented out.

BruFord · 18/10/2024 21:15

@Needanewname42 I think they’re old news now but you never know, there are nut cases out there.

BasiliskStare · 19/10/2024 01:20

I think Harry has proven that a quiet under the radar visit is quite safe ( to the UK - forgetting the Columbia / Nigeria places ) So I am somewhat surprised he thinks the UK is unsafe for his family to see his father and others, & I think a bit sad if this is instilled into his children. But his choice. I think RAVEC have given him a very good compromise & I am not sure why he won't just leave it and pay back the court case money. But I am not he.

He won’t leave it because William and family have 24/7 taxpayer funded security so that’s what Harry wants .

Portugal is popular for that Golden Visa thing - ie an EU residency permit for a certain (large) investment. Then one could go wafting throughout Europe, Edward and Wallis style…

Actually you can rent the cottages on Balmoral when the family are not there and you can rent several places in Cornwall owned by now William then Charles - including the place on the Scilly Isles that they stay in when they vacation there - quite expensive.

I think they've lived rent free in lots of places 🙂
It's an odd saying, isn't it?
Sounds so wise and then you think: "There's lots of people living rent free in my head because they're in my memory. Queen Victoria, Ryan and Ronnie (you need to be Welsh for that example, I suspect), Olga the lady who owned the chip shop near where I grew up..."
She was a nice lady, Olga, but I doubt I'd have managed to get much head-rent out of her.
Even when she was alive (RIP Olga 🙏)

How often do Senior Royals ie King, Anne, Ed, Andrew or William, stay in any of those places???

But I do think it would be stupid for H to rent his house out. Knowing it's his house out it would be easy for someone to plant bugs or do things to cause harm.

As much as he's slipping down the list, he's still the kings son, and probably still a target.

Hotels are slightly different in that even if you know PH often frequents a hotel you have no idea what room he stays in. And messing with stuff is more likely to harm the next guest rather than the intended target.

Probably true.
But if he carries on slipping down the list this rapidly, soon it'll be apple-pie-bed or clingfilm-over-the-loo risk level.
Don't really need to bug him - he finds it difficult to keep his trap shut anyway.

Agree with most of this, except that it's obvious he realises perfectly well the UK isn't unsafe for his family and that refusing to bring them is more about his pettish security demands

IMO it's just as likely that Meghan won't allow them to visit and that the "security issue" is a useful cover for whatever may be going on at home

MissRoseDurward · 19/10/2024 12:02

I cannot imagine how much their security is costing. There must be enough bodies to provide 2 teams

As the children get older, they'll increasingly be doing things separately. What then? Four teams?

I think you can also stay at the King's farmhouse in Romania when he isn't there.

It would have been sensible to buy an estate in California which could generate an income and where they could live - a vineyard or something. Put in a good manager to run it for them. But if course they were going to be Netflix stars.

"Nigel Wynn wants chips for brecwast" has a permanent spot in my head. And Phyllis Doris is the name of the dog I never yet got.
