The patent office apparently has turned down the trademark of Meghans new jam making business American Riviera Orchard on the grounds that you can't trademark geographical locations. You would have thought somebody would have picked up on this before now.

This joy nonsense is a bit crass coming on the day before the anniversary of the Queens death.

They're fairly standard mindfulness concepts wrapped up in new lingo.

Actually listing a few things every day that have made you happy and are glad/grateful you have in your life is a mindfulness practice, and is one of Michael Mosley's Just One Things

Joy (I think) refers to the idea of identifying what in your life brings you pleasure (nurtures you) and then bringing more of that in to your life (general idea being that the things you feed are the things that grow).

They're well known concepts, that have been described (over centuries!) in various ways. Some thinkers convey them better than others

Having joy and gratitude in your life is a really positive thing. As long as you actually mean those sentiments. Not sure Meghan does. Just lip service and sound bites as usual

Rumshotsandrainshowers · 08/09/2024 22:35

I think the issue is Megan doesn’t have the wit to understand how poorly it comes across, she just thinks she’s being clever or on trend or something, she doesn’t realise she comes across as not being real.

Well put as usual, smilesy - not that this latest word salad counts for anything, because if it really is a new wellness craze she'll lose interest in it just as fast as she does everything else

friendlycat · 08/09/2024 23:25

Just referring back to the David Beckham analogy. He had considerable talent to start with! Whether you like him or not he harnessed the capital of brand Beckham based on his international popularity. Meghan has no such talent, skill or popularity.

It’s hard to put yourself on a false platform and try and engender a sense of superiority and stardom when you’ve actually done nothing to earn it apart from marrying into a famous royal family. I’m not denying her actress career but that never delivered the “status” she has now and didn’t achieve A list type of actress status that others have achieved based on their talents.

We can all grow with age and experience and the past can influence the future. But you can’t suddenly become a philanthropist and major influencer just by marrying well. You have to prove your own worth with humility, honesty and hard graft supporting worthwhile causes. Just speaking a whole bunch of stuff doesn’t cut it. This she doesn’t seem to understand.

thecrossIambearing · 09/09/2024 00:49

Meghan talking about her "intentionality and joy" blah blah at a bookshop where it costs you to be a member - $200/300 a month to attend the events. She got that microphone. Look at meeeee!

I am aware that they are well known concepts.
I don't need them explained.
My argument would be that Meghan gives little joy and that if she genuinely exercised gratitude she would not have behaved to others in the way she has done.
I have no idea what "intentionality" means.
I do, however, understand hypocrisy.

In a nutshell.

I appreciate the definition, I’ve not heard of the therapy connections before.

She really talks utter tosh though. Stupid thing is that saying now is a chapter of joy immediately makes you ask what came before in the last chapter, and the mind immediately moves to its opposite, a chapter of hate. Which is pretty fair really.

I also dislike how this narrative is clearly staged and to gaslight everyone they’ve trodden on in both families. Oh, you’re sad with us? But we are all about joy and gratitude so it must be you that’s the problem you couldn’t possibly feel angry with us, you must be lacking joy and gratitude in your life.

IsoldeWagner · 09/09/2024 05:59

More than 50 years ago, when I was a teenager, we were taught to practise joy and gratitude. (I went to a religious school). These are very old concepts, especially in the Christian lexicon. It's aim was to ensure that you didn't put yourself front and centre, and that you were considerate of others, your appreciated others, and stopped developing petty resentments.
It's not a bad approach.
However, you have to live it, not speak it.

IsoldeWagner · 09/09/2024 06:00

@EigerTheTiger you're right!

This is absolutely spot on. The Marie Kondo advice for dealing with people, who don’t bring you joy. https://medium.com/@elisong/letting-go-of-toxic-people-that-dont-spark-joy-13f9e947d89c

Oops quoted the wrong post. This is spot on…

I suspect that Meghan means the ‘joy and gratitude’ of her prescence that those around her experience when she’s near them 😵‍💫

I suspect so, too!

Twistybranch · 09/09/2024 08:07

So I thought it was Oprahs book club….but it was the opening of a new book shop in town and invited along we’re ’hometown Heros’. People who live in Monteceito and have authored a book. So on a table in the shop, they have all their local authors. That’s why the Spare book is there.

So I think Oprah has obviously been invited and Megan because she has written a book. Interesting that Harry isn’t there promoting the new paperback? But Meghan is for a children’s book she published years ago. Any hoo, I don’t think Oprah and Meghan are necessarily that close.

Twistybranch · 09/09/2024 08:15

Here the thing, even if she is undergoing this new wellness gratitude and joy drive….the way she talks about it is odd. It’s just therapy banalities.

For example, from reading about joy therapy, one thing is lists for example is undertaking hobbies and learning new skills.

So you would think when sharing with people about what’s going on in her life, instead of saying she is loving her chapter of joy, you would think she would say something like: I’ve taken up watercolour painting and I really enjoy being outdoors and painting nature, I’m learning Portuguese, or even talk about making jam! That she likes picking fruits and putting together unusual flavours etc.

But what she does, is manage to say exactly nothing. We are all none the wiser.

Much like everything else.

Maybe she should consider the saying of Prince Philip:’ Say less. Do more’

Seems she never took that on board but did understand it’s a snappy tagline that she could copy for Archewell: ‘Show up.Do good’

ShamedBySiri · 09/09/2024 08:19

I never knew about the kidnap plot @WinnieTheW0rm

And Victoria handled it amazingly:

"Mrs Beckham was told of the plot before watching her England captain husband play at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
She did not tell her husband until after the match."

Given the horrible plot around Holly Willoughby it's clear that celebrities do need security. But most handle their lives discreetly and that is the best protection.

Can’t remember where I read it and I can’t find it now, but I’m sure I saw that it costs £200 dollars to belong to Oprah’s book club 🤷‍♀️

Rumshotsandrainshowers · 09/09/2024 08:38

It strikes me that they are going to start getting desperate. If Netflix doesn’t renew which is likely. Then they need to make money. Don’t get me wrong they could settle down and have a quiet life, more than enough money for that, but they don’t want to do that, so they need to earn. Which means they are going to get desperate.

and desperate people do desperate things…

Thedom · 09/09/2024 08:53

Yes, it appears it was the opening of a bookstore. Meghan got the hard seat in the audience with the other attendees, Oprah got the VIP soft cushy chair. Although M did get a go with the mic, which kind of looks a bit pointless in a small room with 2 or 3 rows of seats.

It appears the bookstore is co-owned by a friend of Meghans' who was on her podcast and a board member of WME.

For once Meghan looks the best dressed, the audience and Oprah don't appear to have put in much effort at all.

IsoldeWagner · 09/09/2024 08:55

Why do you need a microphone to talk to about 6 people in a book shop?

IAmATorturedPoet · 09/09/2024 09:06

It sounds very much like she has regurgitated that straight out of a therapy book.

No-one speaks in that way unless maybe you are a therapist at a therapists convention.

She is not a therapist and she’s at a bookstore.

But she does look very happy with a microphone in her hand - clearly that brings her joy.
