The patent office apparently has turned down the trademark of Meghans new jam making business American Riviera Orchard on the grounds that you can't trademark geographical locations. You would have thought somebody would have picked up on this before now.

I think she's seen some royal crests and has tried to make it look a bit more twirly and impressive.

And failed.

Crikey, how about this for a contrast? (Selena Gomez.) I’m not a fan of the mass consumerism involved but as an academic exercise, you could argue that this is what modern success looks like and that it had to have involved talent, hard work and properly utilising professional advisors. And setting a ‘popular price point’.

Also to a large extent the principal becomes the product with ranges of goods, and neither M nor H will fully do that. They would see it as a social climb down in their self-created existences as globally global philanthropists; and frankly, they have become, to increasing numbers of people, unrelatable, so nobody’s going to be buying their crap anyway whether it’s food or mental health guidance.

They’re stuck in a dichotomy.

So how they think they’re going to make significant money flogging stuff I really don’t know.

"The singer became the most followed woman in the world on Instagram last year.

She counts more than 424 million fans on the platform, ahead of Swift and Kylie Jenner"

That somewhat puts Meghan's 600k followers on Instagram in perspective, although to be fair, if she actually posted any content the numbers might rise a little.

The A and the R are very similar to Queen Alexandra’s monogram that she used for her coronation with Edward VII - the letters are on top of each other rather than side by side though.

Oh, yes! Very similar.

I can remember a report ages ago of the Princess Royal effusively describing MM as someone with a great deal to say on a great many subjects

Yes, I remember that very well and would give a lot to hear what Anne has to say behind the scenes Grin

In fairness Meghan's not alone in having, as BunnyLake so accurately said, "so much ego and so little ability", but then most of tthem aren't qute so keen on being in the public eye so don't get the same attention

AutumnCrow · 07/09/2024 10:45

Even with AI at their disposal, M&H couldn’t knock up a useable monogram between them.

They really are too old now to be this useless.

The money they must be ploughing through will be eye-watering, what with the vanity staff, vanity armed security, vanity château, vanity grounds, vanity mortgage, vanity car fleets, vanity agencies and vanity ‘luxe’ lifestyle. Many, many $$ millions annually.

I think the freebies and income started drying up some time ago.

Now H will be starting to see big chunks being bitten out of his millions and starting to wonder about the future. It’ll be the first time he’ll have seen his assets be seriously depleted rather than added to.

His rumoured 40th birthday inheritance will, I’ll wager, barely touch the sides of the Sussexes’ running costs for a year.

I suspect that the principals in the royal family are well briefed on this. I wonder if the advice is, ‘I would wait for checkmate, sir’?

That logo is such a swirly mess with the 'artful flower' on top that could be seen as a crown. It's awful. So obvious it was done to make it look 'Royal' rather than anything to do with America, American Riviera or indeed an orchard. Ridiculous.

You can’t even really tell that they are supposed to be letters. At lease QA’s were recognisable as an A and R. The ARO logo just looks like someone go swirly with a gold pen. Like on top of a wedding cake

I found the Prince Harry solo bike ride in Montecito with his security team following him in a Range Rover very amusing. The costs sure do stack up to say nothing of the environmental cost of being tailed by a Range Rover whilst riding a bike.

IsoldeWagner · 07/09/2024 11:17

It's just nonsense. Plenty of famous people go out and about and don't need bodyguards following them everywhere.
I've seen plenty on the tube, and in loads of other places. It's vanity. Or paranoia.

I honestly don't know how he spends his days, holed up in the Chateau. Balmoral must have some difficult memories for both him and William but this time of year when all the Royals congregate there, cousins have fun playing together, there are hikes, rides, fishing and incredible freedom he must really suffer from the FOMO.

Lonely bike rides followed by security seem a very poor swap for Balmoral.

W&K apparently have a little cottage on the estate hardly anyone knows about which is very private, not even any photos of it, where they go, they used to go there as students for quiet weekends.
All this business about being unsafe. I don't know what schools A&L will go to but America seems a terrifying place to school your children.

IsoldeWagner · 07/09/2024 11:23

I've never seen papped pictures of anyone at Balmoral - or even Sandringham. These estates are very private.
By contrast I've seen many papped pictures of the Sussexes since they left the UK. The bike ride is just the latest of many.

Thedom · 07/09/2024 11:25

She went so, so traditional, the name, the logo, its all far too old fashioned.

I know it was to emphasise and capitalise on her Royal connection, so I guess that is the pitfall of using the connection to her husbands historical family, but it's just so outdated looking for a new brand.

Some recent celebrity brand logos, which are more in keeping with an interesting brand and a current aesthetic.

Some blokes on a biking holiday recorded a conversation with King Charles out on a walk alone at Balmoral. It was a really sweet conversation.

I do hope that it was caught on a Go Pro and that he didn't have a phone shoved in his face. The whole interaction seemed very natural and relaxed and I thought KC looked well, but I'm also really mindful of his privacy.

IsoldeWagner · 07/09/2024 11:31

Yes, I remember that, @JADS .
I also remember reading about the late Queen walking in Balmoral, with her cousin (I think?) and some American walkers stopped to chat and didn't realise who they were. No security, no standing on status.

friendlycat · 07/09/2024 11:36

The logo truly is awful.

The wording is wrong to start with
Amateurish
Old fashioned and out of date with today's trends
So obviously trying too hard to depict royalty and badly missing the mark
Generally a big mess visually

It makes you actually wonder who came up with this visual awfulness. We can all guess on who may have come up with the name, but who actually crafted the actual logo into a design?

Whoever designed it must have had a brief and the final design would have to have been approved so it starts and ends with Meghan

It would have been so much better to have gone with something completely different something to highlight her and not her connection to the RF something stand alone and stand out.

Thedom · 07/09/2024 11:42

You never really know how accurate these X posts are, or if they have been modified, but someone on Reddit posted a photo of the emblem on a buckingham palace gate and how Meghans' logo closely resembles it.

I guess that was her inspiration 😁

I wonder if the "O" was deliberately left out, and that fact was disguised by all the swirls, in an attempt to use the "AR" logo for other brands in the future, eg American Riviera Bakery/ Homes/Clothing.

SadOrWickedFairy · 07/09/2024 11:46

Yes, where is the 'O', poor 'O' being left out.

Thedom · 07/09/2024 11:47

There is the godawful trailer for her brand too, with her floating through corridors in a huge ballgown, more imagery to induce a link to her husbands family.
