Meghans trademark not allowed

The patent office apparently has turned down the trademark of Meghans new jam making business American Riviera Orchard on the grounds that you can't trademark geographical locations. You would have thought somebody would have picked up on this before now.

Well it’s not like she needed the money anyway and how much jam could one woman make?

Is the American Riviera an actual place then?

No but it’s a term so frequently used to refer to that corner of CA that the judge deemed it was as good as a place name.

Yes, it's the name for the coastal area around Santa Barbara ... like the English Riviera (Torquay, Paignton, Brixham, etc.) but sunnier

The cynic in me has to admit this was also my first thought. It seemed like they were not going to achieve well with it but now it's someone else's fault it failed rather than theirs.
