Meghans trademark not allowed

The patent office apparently has turned down the trademark of Meghans new jam making business American Riviera Orchard on the grounds that you can't trademark geographical locations. You would have thought somebody would have picked up on this before now.

I'm that fool! I tried to make it once .... it was as hard as marble!

Goodness knows what I did wrong. The kids smashed it to pieces and sucked the bits like a boiled sweet!

Reminds me of the time I was making my ds a birthday cake and the phone rang. I stopped to.anser it and chatted to my sister for 30 mins then went back to cake. I put the sugar in twice. The cake exploded in the oven with the middle rising up and exploding like a volcano. I simply put lots of red and orange icing on it and told me D's I made him a volcano cake. You made your DC some raspberry boiled sweets. 😉

Who would want to buy her jam.or dog biscuits anyway? There are already loads of jam brands to choose from. I like Hartley's strawberry.

Mylovelygreendress · 04/09/2024 13:26

Hmm but do Hartley’s jams have a squint label with fancy writing ?

Yup. No reason to buy her jam at all.

Mind, Paul Newman did well with his sauces and a slew of Hollywood actors have launched booze brands.

H&M: if you’re reading this, or one of your ‘Global Communications Team’ is, I suggest you launch Thousand Island flavoured tequila. Winner winner chicken dinner. I’ll take 5% please, for the idea.

The Los Angeles public library has an excellent list of resources for people who want to start a business in California even if they don't have a library card.

How does she manage to make such a mess of everything?

Too much ego and too little talent. She reminds me of those old X Factor contestants who thought they were the second Mariah Carey or Whitney Huston but were actually Hilda Ogden.

Disclaimer: I love Hilda Ogden (but not Meghan Markle)

That’s a very good blog post. The previous refusal of registration for American Riviera marks is a bit embarrassing. It does suggest that we’ll never see ARO branded products. They couldn’t possibly launch unprotected brands.

Damn your good ideas! I’ve missed out on a small fortune now.

Do you remember one time, nearly every celeb had their own perfume. It seems that way now with booze lines, beauty products, cookery ware et al. It seems such a saturated market. I suppose they must all be raking it in - but I can't see it lasting. It is ten a penny and my gut feeling just says it is produced by the same or similar sources with different branding - with plus plus in the price for the celebrity endorsement.

The most cynical of these ventures are known tea total celebs who have booze lines like J Lo and Blake Lively. Why the fuck would you take recommendations and buy cocktails from someone who doesn't even drink?

I think we will see a move back to a more discerning market where people will only want to buy from credible outlets.

The Duchy range has some credibility because they make it on Duchy estates and the profits go to Duchy causes.

TheRoughWatersofLIfe · 04/09/2024 13:54

J Lo being the worst being both tea total with an alcoholic husband yet still pushing a booze line. It is the worst of celebrity hypocrisy.

According to Paltrow, the company's name came from Peter Arnell telling her that successful internet companies have double Os in their name, and she "wanted it to be a word that means nothing and could mean anything". Adding the double "O" between her initials thus resulted in the company name.

Well, I learn something every day. And I know that Tesco has something to do with Tessa Cohen.😃

I bet Meghan wishes she could use Moom but it just doesn’t have the same ring about it 😁

I agree with @Rhaidimiddim Using "Lillibet" was a big middle finger to the Queen, with no thought to the ramifications for the poor kid.

I am thinking optimistically that Lili might become an intelligent, truly classy adult who decides to change her name or add in a third one to go before Diana and Lillibet. This will be a few years before the sensible 45 year-old Archie becomes passionately interested In his history. The song says I've to look on the bright side. Edit to correct spellings.

BunnyLake · 04/09/2024 14:09

She should call it Bish. Then she can market it with stuff like The Bish is Back, Queen Bish (she’ll like that), etc

Everything they do just gives the impression that they're always 'A day late and a dollar short'. Would they do that deliberately while trying to establish themselves? I don't think it's deliberate, I think they're just a couple of fools.

Earrings. This put me in mind of the Issy Star earrings.

The Princess of Wales doesn't have to talk about her earrings.

But last year she wore the Issy Stars
ISSY STAR - BRAVE MIND CHARITY STAR HOOP EARRINGS – EAR SASS
without fuss or comment, and boosted sales. £5 per pair goes to the Brave Mind charity in memory of Issy, who took her life in early 2023 and the earrings are made by her sister. The earrings have raised c£10k

I don't think the Princess said anything about the choice, nor has she explicitly championed the charity (though of course it does fit with the Wales' MH charities). She's just quietly done a good thing

What I don't really understand is why she didn't just reopen The Tig. It was established, plenty of material already on there for new readers to discover and they could delete any posts that didn't match the current image.

A much snappier name and branding and a genuine project. She could flog a signature Tignanello as well. Plus it's already associated with her.

anyonengot any ideas why she couldn't just have done this ?

Uricon2 · 04/09/2024 14:24

Good comparison with Newman's Own @Rummly , phenomenal amount of money raised for charity after it started quite small, I believe. Perhaps that's the key to success in all charitable enterprise and when buliding a brand (well, that and the fact Paul Newman didn't annoy people)

This is refreshing compared to the sister thread on r/royalsgossip. Lots of insistence there that this is a minor procedural blip and completely normal for trademark applications in the US and in fact, the instagram, video, jam etc wasn't even a "launch", and this is all being manipulated by the British Press. Can anyone recall a celebrity sideline like this where there's all this promo (and that's what it was, whatever anyone tries to argue now) but still no actual product five months later? I can understand her wanting to snap up the Instagram handle, website etc. but this could have been done quietly without all the fanfare, perhaps with a few red herrings thrown in, whilst the trademark was being ironed out.

Apparently they did use a specialist trademark lawyer for the application, which makes the whole thing even more bizarre. No doubt at the outset they could have foreseen the likely pitfalls and given Meghan and Co. a half decent idea of timescale as to how long all this would take.

I don't think it's normal, but it's possible that it will prove to be just a blip. She has 3 months to sort out the issues raised on the current application (and pay the correct fee). If that can be done, then it could go still go ahead.

Three months takes us to the start of December, and I've no idea how long it would take to process a good quality application. I think any hopes of getting Thanksgiving or Christmas sales are well and truly dashed, and so the early next year is the soonest realistic date. I wonder what that means for Netflix?

Incidentally, The Mirror ran a piece yesterday with a "source" giving an update on the release date for the show. It started as a puff piece saying how excited MM is about it all, but then changed tone

Meghan Markle's new Netflix series gets major update as critics are already slamming it - The Mirror US
