Harry in UK for funeral

DM is reporting Harry came to the UK for the funeral of his uncle Robert Fellowes. The husband of Diana's sister Lady Jane. Apparently they kept their distance from each other and didn't speak. Looks like William has the Windsor habit of bearing grudges. Don't blame him in this case.

I can't believe anyone would think it isn't racist and unpleasant. The article was absolutely awful. Here are just the headlines. It gets worse when you dive into it. It talks of all the crimes, listing them out, the 'tatty' houses, the gangs, the 'crips', the crime ridden neighbourhood and bringing Meghan, her mother and her Aunt into it at every opportunity. If anyone doesn't think it was racist, there is nothing more to be said.

EXCLUSIVE: Harry's girl is (almost) straight outta Compton: Gang-scarred home of her mother revealed - so will he be dropping by for tea?

  • Prince Harry's new girl, Suits star Meghan Markle, is from Crenshaw, LA
  • Crenshaw has endured 47 crimes in the past week - including murder
  • Gangs, including the Bloods, count the neighborhood as their territory
  • Markle' social worker mom, Doria Ragland, lives in the run-down area
  • And the actress's aunt, Ava Burrow, is in nearby gang-afflicted Inglewood
  • Plagued by crime and riddled with street gangs, the troubled Los Angeles neighborhood that Doria Ragland, 60, calls home couldn’t be more different to London’s leafy Kensington.
Edited

It’s about the socioeconomic situation in the area where Doria lived.

You keep saying “you can’t believe anyone would think it wasn’t racist” but you still haven’t explained why it is racist.

Personally I think it is more about economic class than race.

The article was written by an American, possibly an LA native? And most articles about Meghan’s background talked about her private school etc

BustingBaoBun · 31/08/2024 18:10

If you can't see it, I can't explain it.

I knew it was written by an American, however the DM is widely read here. So it's irrelevant who wrote it.

IAmATorturedPoet · 31/08/2024 18:19

Yes it is, as is the film of the same name.
That doesn’t fit a certain narrative though so🤷‍♀️

cheezncrackers · 31/08/2024 18:21

And still no explanation about why ‘Compton’ was racist.

I suppose it was more just prejudicial in that Compton is well-known as a rough area of LA which is predominantly black, so the suggestion was that Meghan comes from a drug and gang hotspot in LA. So saying Meghan was 'straight outta Compton' was making her out to be someone that she wasn't (that's also the title of the 1988 album by rappers NWA, who were from Compton). Not only is Meghan not from Compton, but she grew up in a MC household and went to private school.

If you want to wrestle with MN's search function then work away but I certainly can't be bothered

Why should I?
I'm not the one who's suggesting that there were "umpteen posts" saying that Harry should have married "a nice English rose like Kate" without any proof.

Stating things as facts doesn't make them so.

So to say one person's privacy was evaded more than others when the comparison isn't over the same number of years isn't true.

The photos I posted (and there are so many more) all come from when William and Kate were living together in Angelsey. They lived there between 2010 and 2013. Directly comparable to Meghan who lived in London from 2017 to the start of 2020.

So the comparison isn’t inaccurate. Kate’s privacy was demonstrably invaded so much more than Meghan’s ever was. I could fill up post after post of her papped in supermarket carparks in Wales, but for variation have her walking on the beach in North Wales with her sister, William and Kate walking on the beach in North Wales and visiting a pub in North Wales. The community in Wales was much smaller than London too, so the intrusion must have been intense.

(you do realise if we widened the scope to include all the times Kate was papped while attempting to go about her private life over the years, there would be literally thousands of photos, including the times when she was upskirted, shot on holiday topless from half a mile away, and harassed by a crowd of photographers. Your clamours of “Meghan had it worse” are ludicrous on this issue).

Still waiting for you to show me the post where I said Meghan had it worse....considering you pride yourself on always only presenting factual information

But you won't be able to since I didn't say that so I look forward to your apology for making something up that isn't true

It’s a real issue when “dog whistle” is used as a substitute for any actual evidence

Citrusandginger · 31/08/2024 18:44

I'm not defending racism in any way at all, but I always thought the tabloids angle with Compton was to show Meghan was trash, not to make a point about her being black. They did the same with Kate and uncle Gary. I do appreciate though that if you were a person of colour you would be hurt by the race angle first and foremost though.

I think much of the early coverage was outrageously misogynistic though. As other women joining the RF have found. Mike Tindall & Beatrice & Eugenie's husband's not so much.

And of course Meghan committed the great sun of saying no to Piers Morgan.

Were there only dog whistles, or people actually stating that Harry shoul marry a nice English rose, as claimed? Because you've changed the parameter from an actual racist statement to dogwhistles.

@CathyorClaire Focus on the taxpayer funded Royals.

"Harold remains a drain on UK tax payers all the time we're subbing his court costs, his now proved to be unecessary police cavalcades on lightening visits and bids to bring his circus to town and sub that too with incidental costs.

He's fair game for comment just like the rest of them."

I agree with this . To be clear whilst I have other issues about the wider RF & tax payers' money this post is purely about RAVEC.

I don't know if Harry is Bear of Little Brain , or very hubristic ( or both ) - but why he cannot understand how the Government pays for various members of the RF family differently is just astonishing & for him to carry this case on - well - we shall see . But If ( and I hope and suspect his last appeal is turned down re security ) I do hope he just pays back every penny for the court case gracefully.

I thought him asking for the RAVEC person's name was just beyond the pale. If & only if he is trying to get his father to intervene well - does he not understand his father has no more influence over Govt money for security than Harry has.

Surely to goodness his recent forays abroad will weaken his case

We'll see. Does any one know when the case is due be resolved.

I don't think it would have made much difference. I didn't know Meghan was biracial until I read it somewhere.

When they went away from Britain I was talking to a friend and I spoke about 'those two men who went to prison because they threatened Harry because he married a black woman'. The friend said, "Black? What d'you mean, black? Meghan's not black. She's about half a shade darker than I am."

In the Equality Act, race can mean your colour, or your nationality (including your citizenship). It can also mean your ethnic or national origins, which may not be the same as your current nationality.

Oh, bugger, so if there's a white caucasian French person that I don't like does that mean I'm being racist, or do I have to do something absolutely discriminatory against the person for it to count as such?
Gotta move and mix with Sri Lankans.

Yes, if you discriminate against someone French because they are French, that's racist. Confused

You’ve consistently expressed your view that Meghan was treated far worse than other women marrying into Royal family though, Spectre8, and even in the context of being papped. This is not your one and only post on the topic!

Rhaidimiddim · 31/08/2024 19:45

Hmmm....

So @Spectre8 are you confirming, then, that you don't think Megham had it worse than other women sho married into the RF?

CathyorClaire · 31/08/2024 20:18

A bit like Henry and the French manager in his local then?

Well I'm old enough to remember the press coverage the last time another RF "spare" dated an American actress and it wasn't pretty.

@feellikeanalien yes I had forgotten about that!

Were these things true though? Were they facts or were they made up by the press?

Here's the common Middletons according to the Press.
