Church of Scotland is smart dress. Its traditional. You don't turn up in jeans unlike some other Churches. In general Scottish people are careful about what they wear to occasions. ( that's the best way I can phrase it without starting a war 😂)

This is a load of nonsense. You talk as if none of us go to church and none of us live in Scotland.

But who does Tim Lawrence belong to? Where is Anne 🤔

I can't stop laughing at this and I have no idea why 😂 'But who does Tim Lawrence belong to?' 😂

Thanks for brightening my dreary Tuesday

Maybe that's her personal experience?.
It was certainly mine at St Giles Cathedral.

Mine too, in Ayrshire, Inverness, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

MrsFinkelstein · 27/08/2024 12:02

Plus the fact we have several denominations in Scotland.
Church of Scotland.
Presbyterian.
Free Presbyterian.
Catholic.
Baptist.
Brethren.
And that's just the Christian faiths.

DelectableMe · 27/08/2024 12:03

@MrsFinkelstein don't let facts get in the way of an attempt to slate the Princess of Wales!.

CurlewKate · 27/08/2024 12:14

I don't usually defend any member of the RF-but can you imagine the press if the PoW had turned up at church in jeans?🤣

I would love that. I wish one of them would be brave enough to do an ordinary thing like Sunday morning church in ordinary clothes. I'd have a lot more respect for them.

MrsLeonFarrell · 27/08/2024 12:40

The references to "the royals" are interesting. The Royal family is very large with lots of very different individuals in it. Why treat them all as one homogeneous blob with the same opinions and reactions?

To pick out a few fairly opposite pairs at random:

Princess Micheal of Kent
The Duchess of Kent

Prince Andrew
Prince William

Mike Tindall
Meghan Markle

The Duke of Gloucester
The Duke of Sussex

Very different people in the same family.

Why would that garner your respect? We see them particularly the younger royals in jeans all the time in their day to day life so why would wearing jeans to church make you respect them more?, I don’t get it, how about leggings and a hoodie, would you respect them even more than if they wore jeans to church?

CurlewKate · 27/08/2024 12:48

@DappledThings "I would love that. I wish one of them would be brave enough to do an ordinary thing like Sunday morning church in ordinary clothes. I'd have a lot more respect for them"
To be honest, they only go to Church at all because it's part of the deal. And so is wearing the daft clothes.

DelectableMe · 27/08/2024 12:48

True, @BigWillyLittleTodger I respect people more for giving acknowledgement to their surroundings and the people they'll meet. I like an effort made with appearance.

Because it would look like they were doing it because they wanted to rather than as a performance.

Who is they? Have they all told you about their faith or lack of?

Daft clothes? Do you mean King Charles wearing a kilt? Are kilts daft?

BigWillyLittleTodger · 27/08/2024 13:08

DappledThings · 27/08/2024 13:04

I would look at it completely the opposite, it would show they couldn’t be arsed to make an effort and did not want to be there, honestly you would think that they had all turned up to church wearing ball gowns and tiaras and not just smart clothes 🙄

St Giles Cathedral is where very middle class mainly English people go to worship. It is also a tourist attraction. I am sure people attending St Paul's Cathedral services will be more likely to dress up/
Equating St Giles Cathedral to the Church of Scotland as a whole is usual English imperialist nonsense. People visit Edinburgh for the festival and then think think they understand Scotland.

SnappingAtHeels · 27/08/2024 13:09

TBH if i were a member of the RF I'd turn up to church regularly mainly to thank God for his generosity in giving me such an amazing opportunity and lifestyle. (Despite the downsides).

Well we will have to differ then! I don't think wearing a hat and heels and a dress that fancy is anything approaching standard daily attire and, to me, going to church is standard ordinary Sunday thing to do so getting dressed up for it looks like performance. Ordinary clothes would make it look like an ordinary thing they were choosing to do.

It doesn't make them look respectful, just dutiful and uninterested.

Nadeed · 27/08/2024 13:13

I worship at Church every Sunday and very few people dress up. I do not care if the Royals do or do not dress up to go to church. Its irrelevant. I do care when people talk a load of nonsense about the Church of Scotland.
If you do not believe me, watch some online services.

Or would you ask for forgiveness for having so much but not sharing it out? I thought it was easier for a camel to pass through a needle than it is for a rich man to get into Heaven.

CurlewKate · 27/08/2024 13:19

I’d have thought she was better brought up, it would be quite rude to tell a guest that. 🤷‍♀️. But who knows, I used to work for someone who thought the RF were a frightful bunch of middle class plebs 😆

German middle class plebs at that!

Edited

lol, I’ve heard that said before!

Mine too in Perthshire, Dundee, Kirkcaldy and Aberdeenshire

wordler · 27/08/2024 13:33

The thing for me is apart from the hats - what they are wearing doesn’t look particularly dressed up. They are just wearing smart clothes. That’s what my family wears to church or going out to dinner, or going to the theatre etc.

What are the ‘daft clothes’ that other people are seeing?
