Thank you. Of course. I’d forgotten about the request for an apartment there.

BunnyLake · 29/08/2024 17:18

I did too. I have a lovely photo with my son when he’s barely an hour or so old and I’ve got mascara and lip gloss on. I’d had a c section, I must have got my lippy out as soon as I was out of the recovery area. 😁

@BunnyLake I think the RF need you and my SIL!😁

Interesting. I remember someone commenting that they would have accepted an invitation to stay at Windsor Castle just before jetting off to Nigeria had it been forthcoming. I’m actually quite confused as to why Windsor Castle would have a much higher status than Buckingham Palace. Is it all about the name?

I think it looks good for "the brand" TBH. Big really castlely thing, as opposed to an apartment at KP, however huge and well furnished (I've been in 1A, now occupied at times by William and Kate, it is big) I don't think it's beyond probability that even a small part of the indisputable big castley thing would look good on (US) TV, what with exterior shots and all.

MaturingCheeseball · 29/08/2024 18:18

They weren’t angling for a mere apartment at Windsor, they wanted The Castle after the Queen’s death. It’s clear that the plan was for a rival court - and a more glamorous one at that.

What I struggle to understand is why they haven’t merched the kids. Obviously that was the plan - judging by birth announcement shenanigans - but afterwards - why nothing? Patents were filed for companies such as LilibetsCloset in California, but no further action on this. Surely pics of the children and a clothes line would bring in a decent sum?

smilesy · 29/08/2024 18:34

I have a feeling that Harry genuinely doesn’t want pictures of the children to be made public As for a clothing line, would people really want a sort of royal adjacent type of clothing? And as we have seen, they don’t seem to be prepared to put in groundwork and / or be able to stick at a project so I think any type of merching is a bit of a non starter

Mummyoflittledragon · 29/08/2024 18:37

Yes, something was said recently in the press that he had overruled any suggestion of having pictures of the children released.

If only there was a third son and I was twenty years younger 😁

I think it’s a combination of that and the kids not being photogenic enough to be an unqualified PR success - as I recall they’ve released images of Archie in particular previously and some trolls have been pretty cruel about his appearance - so they probably want to avoid more of that, which is understandable. The Wales kids are all fine looking but they still attract vitriolic posts from the Sussex squad. William and Catherine disregard this - as they should IMO given their roles but H & M have no status that necessitates publicity for their kids. I also believe that the kids being kept private is another reason they shouldn’t have Prince/Princess titles.

Hughs · 29/08/2024 19:49

They would inevitably be compared to the Wales children and I'm not sure Meghan would want that if theirs are not going to "win", whatever that means for her.

Plus they can't very well start posting photos of their children now, not after all this keeping children safe from the internet flim flam that they've been coming out with.

This absolutely sounds about right. Gosh the Queen was so wise.

MrsLeonFarrell · 29/08/2024 20:24

Re living at Windsor, I suspect that the Royal family learnt from Andrew that having an entitled spare with close, frequent access to the Monarch wasn't a brilliant idea. The Queen's judgement was imo definitely affected by the fact that she saw Andrew frequently, and anyone would be worn down over time, you don't want that happening again in the next generation.

PoppysAunt · 29/08/2024 16:56

I would have agreed with you at one point, @Serenster , but it does appear that Harry is loving the publicity as much as his wife now; he was positively basking in all the flashes and clicks when they arrived in Nigeria. I thought it seemed like a change. I agree that the issue is that they want positive coverage, rather than none.

Those same camera clicks that make him angry and take him right back to his mother?

upinaballoon · 29/08/2024 20:33

LaMarschallin · 29/08/2024 16:00

Actually, tbf, Harry looks like he's pressing down with his thumb on the blanket to move it away from Archie's face - presumably for a better view in the photos.

Yes. I agree. Still couldn't see him, though. I think royal babies should be put into a gentle little cage that can be up-ended so that we can all have a good gawp before they wake up and shout.

sausawyee · 29/08/2024 20:34

Well I suppose we have moved on from Royal babies with having to have the Court present 😳

You know when I look back I see that now. They wanted Windsor Castle. They wanted the " status" of that . A hospital was not exciting enough for them. When you look back you see all the tricks and scheming more clearly. At the time you didn't notice but as time passes, you can see it all!

Another yes, I agree.

JSMill · 29/08/2024 20:43

@sausawyee so you think they weren't against a photocall with the baby as such, they just thought they would get one up on W&K by doing it in Windsor Castle instead of hospital steps. I think that's brilliant thinking and now you have pointed that out, I can totally see it. However the whole thing looked very odd and over formal, which was a contrast to how happy and relaxed K and W were in their photos with George.
I have to say K and W won me over when they posed for photos with George. It must have been hell having so many people camping on the hospital doorstep but they took it in their stride and seemed actually appreciative of people's good wishes. I think that's a major difference between the couple. K and W appreciate the support and goodwill of the public whereas H and M seem to find the attention a burden to be resented.

upinaballoon · 29/08/2024 20:48

I remember that when Louis was born William said something like, "Thrice the worry!" to someone/people in the crowd, who had been calling out to him, as they were near to going away in the car. I'll pootle off and see if there's a YouTube of it, not to post, just to see.

I agree but I think it’s more a combination of Meghan wanting the status of an actual castle to live in and Harry being able to boast that he was the favourite grandson who lived near to the late Queen. I think there are a few reasons why it would never have happened though. The late Queen was acutely aware that living in the Castle would have elevated the Sussexes not only above the Cambridges as they then were, but also above Charles as them Prince of Wales. Also I think the Queen was fond of Windsor and didn’t particularly want to share it. She probably valued being able to relax there. The whole idea was a complete non starter

MrsLeonFarrell · 29/08/2024 21:20

Plus I don't think Harry ever grasped that no matter how fond his Grandmother might be of him, the Queen was always mindful of royal hierarchy and put duty above family all her life.

I thought camera clicks only make him angry in the U.K. which is why he MUST have 24/7 armed security?

QueenofTheBorg · 29/08/2024 22:14

Interesting article about royal births, thanks

also now it’s been posited that they wanted the photo op of Windsor with Archie rather than the hospital steps it seems obvious from the YouTube clip

hmm, they were planning their exit for ages weren’t they?

PoppysAunt · 29/08/2024 22:18

I think they never intended to stay.

Yes he did! I remember it clearly as I’d never heard anyone use the word “thrice” before 😆

Maybe Meghan was desperate to get her hands on Queen Mary's Dolls' house?

Windsor Castle always strikes me as an odd place to want to live. It's full of tourists. The town is very twee and the traffic is dreadful. KP is in such a stunning location and while it's touristy, the RF apartments seem much more separate. Also London is a good place for anonymity rather like New York.
