However, the duke was specifically concerned with online bullying and the extreme effect it could have on the vulnerable. 'They could be in the next-door room on a tablet or phone and can be going down these rabbit holes and, before you know it, within 24 hours they could be taking their life,' he babbled.

'We have got to the stage where almost every parent needs to be a first responder and even the best first responders in the world wouldn't be able to tell the signs of possible suicide. That is the terrifying piece of this.'

Just when I was thinking this might be rather a disproportionate response to a nonetheless serious problem, Pauley reminded viewers that even the duchess herself had once considered suicide.

Meghan nodded sadly at the memory of that time back in olde England, when Archie was still just a baby, that she didn't feel her life was worth living.

'I just didn't – I didn't want to be alive any more,' she said, clutching Harry's left knee for support. Jane Pauley thought Meghan looked 'uncomfortable' with the morbid line of questioning, but the duchess looked pretty relaxed to me.

'I understand where you are. I wasn't expecting it,' she said nobly, going on to explain that her 'healing journey' involved being open about her suicidal thoughts.
'I would never want someone else to feel that way, I would never want someone else to be making those sorts of plans, and I would never want someone else not to be believed.
'So if me voicing what I have overcome will save someone... I'll take a hit for that,' added Meghan, giving viewers an inspiring example of the emotional benevolence that makes her so very special.

Indeed, in the four years that the Sussexes have lived in America, Meghan has perfected her gracious duchess-in-exile persona: regal but relatable, grand and bland in equal measure.

She smiled beatifically when she talked of 'change for good' and her 'amazing' children, but sometimes would look stonily at Harry when it was his turn to talk on camera. Husbands around the world would recognise and interpret that icy, wifely stare in seconds: Watch what you are saying, mister.

And keep it short. In a brief exchange of hugs on a veranda, the Sussexes met some of the bereaved parents. One couple had lost a daughter to online bullying, two others had lost sons who ordered drugs online which killed them. However, the Parents' Network, which has been launched on the Sussexes' official Archewell website, will meet online in future. 'This in-person gathering was just for the launch,' said Pauley. I bet it was.

Sometimes you wonder how Harry and Meghan have the nerve, the sheer brassy audacity to do what they do. Of course, the altruistic urge is obvious in launching an online Parents' Network.

One can see the essential goodness in building an 'empowered community of families' to 'support and uplift each other'.
Yet it is no secret that the Sussexes are estranged – to a greater or lesser degree – from their own parents.

Parents such as Mr T Markle, who lives in reduced circumstances in a dusty Mexican border town. The 80-year-old is in poor health and has yet to meet his daughter Meghan's husband or be introduced to his two grandchildren, who he is longing to get to know before he dies.
Guy
Is there a network for him to join? Or what about a network for King Charles, the parent who has become so concerned about his younger son's public indiscretions and confessions that he reportedly avoids taking his calls and keeps their meetings to a minimum?
It is all very confusing. Do the Sussexes mean well – or are they just mean? Perhaps you think I'm being too cynical, but I'll take a hit for that.

Thanks for that.

So.it is an online forum, where posters support each other. I wonder if Archewll claims copyright of anything posted, for use in future projects.

It'll also have to be heavily moderated, it's ironic that people preaching about Internet safety are setting up an online forum- do they think it'll be sunshine and rainbows? Some people are gross online and a support forum will still be a target for some. It's easy for them though isn't it, no real graft just releasing something for others to contribute to.

I thought some of what Harry came out with was bollocks.

"even the best first responders in the world wouldn't be able to tell the signs of possible suicide. That is the terrifying piece of this"

Really? The best first responders in the world can't tell signs of potential suicide? Seriously?

If he'd said something more like "there needs to be better training so that if someone is in crisis, it's recognised quickly that they need healthcare rather than police" or "we need to make sure all first responders have this training" then yes, absolutely.

It's a load of shite basically.

It is a worthwhile endeavour and seems close to the couple's heart. The comments on this thread highlight why, sadly, such projects are needed.

No-one is claiming it's not worthwhile. The comments on this thread are pertinent to a discussion of the issues. If you regard any of them as "online hate" then you should report.

Harry - 'some kind of petulant whining sound.'

A victim wearing £12k jewellery 😳

Mainoo72 · 05/08/2024 11:52

It’s just embarrassing. They have zero credibility now.

Wasntmeanttobelikethis · 05/08/2024 12:06

It was good to have a break from their whining; they’re back, oh dear….
i notice they’re mentioning their children a lot more; I think they are their final card to play: building up to their big debut on Netflix
Feels like they are churning out the same lines; nothing else to offer
Has H got on his virtue signalling bracelets?

Yes it is a worthwhile endeavour but all it is to these two is something to launch, something to yap to the media about until their next pet project comes along. They are very good at finding new causes but bloody useless at sticking with that cause for years, putting in hard work. They are chancers, using causes for their own gains. There is nothing genuine about these two and that is what puts peoples backs up.

I couldn’t agree more. Sad that people behave like that. She comes across as sincere but the biases on display here remain a testament to the lack of goodwill and deliberate misunderstanding regarding anything Meghan does. It just makes Meghan’s case more robust when it comes to working in the online spaces to help others.

Indeed it is, there are lots of very knowledgeable, passionate and dedicated people already working on initiatives and charities; if they really wanted to help why not donate and lend their 'clout' to those? No, this is about them trying to keep themselves relevant.

PoppysAunt · 05/08/2024 12:26

@StrawberriesandCreamTea it's not a bias against Meghan - it's all the behaviour and evidence of the last few years that would lead one to question this latest interview and publicity drive.

And a revenue stream.

A new cause for people to donate to, that they can cream 95% off. (And perhaps some real-life stories they can turn into product.)

It clearly is bias as Meghan has not done or said anything that warrants the continued negative beliefs and trolling of what she does and says. Being picked apart in order to dehumanise her is just outright disgusting.

TinySmol · 05/08/2024 12:32

While I'm sorry for her trouble I really think, at this point, they have spilled their guts.

There are no more guts left to spill, no further dirty laundry to reveal in a Big Reveal.
I think they've covered everything now.

She saw him coming, that's for sure. I think she's a blagger and a snake oil salesman.
He doesn't know his arse from his elbow.

The only thing that would make me listen to them is if that guy James Hewitt did turn out to be Harry's father.

MrsLeonFarrell · 05/08/2024 12:34

It's a worthwhile thing to do.

Neither Harry nor Meghan have any expertise in mental health to bring to the table. If they were shining a light on work that experts were doing in this field or centering the stories of those parents they were hugging it would be different, but they aren't. Sadly once again they are doing the celebrity charity thing of centring themselves instead of others and this taking focus away from their subject.

I agree with them that online life is bad for us psychologically, because humans need in person connections. So why launch an online forum?

And when talking about online bullying, why not condemn the online bullying Catherine was recently subjected to by people online who identify as Sussex fans? It isn't just Meghan who has suffered. To ignore what happens in their name is to give people who don't want to listen an easy distraction point.

I'm sure they mean well, but if they want to be taken seriously they need to address the discordant aspects of their story which they are ignoring, they need to assemble experts, and they need to stop centering themselves and their story and instead focus on others. Otherwise they risk people thinking this is just the latest cause, that will be ditched as soon as they think of something else.

Meghan and Harry were well liked by the majority of RF supporters.
It was their own malicious intent that led to them being disliked.
You can’t start bad mouthing on a global level whilst your grandad is on deaths door and expect to retain any respect.
They then went on to publish books and do documentaries with more bad mouthing so people felt further disdain for them.
They despise the RF and that’s their choice but they still want the titles and refuse to give them up.
They feel the uk was so unsafe but are willing to travel for a tour of Columbia.
Hypocrisy at its finest.
Nothing to do with bias, all to do with the total crap they come out with.

Lots of people who aren't huge fans of Meghan aren't fans of Harry either, in fact in this thread he's catching as much critique as she is. Are people allowed to not be a fan of his and be critical of the stuff he chooses to put out into the public domain and profit from? Is it just Meghan we must not speak of?

She has repeatedly lied . Does that not warrant criticism?
The person who has received the worst online bullying is Catherine . Maybe they could speak out about that ?

peanutbuttertoasty · 05/08/2024 12:47

They are a pair of ghoulish vultures, exploiting others’ grief for their own gain. See also Uvalde.
