As the lady enjoys the game why not. 😊

Yes, because your average school sports centre, community football pitch, or other 'genuine grass roots sports event' can spontaneously accommodate the security and logistical requirements of a visit from the future King or Queen.

You're just looking to have a go at them for any reason, aren't you? You can practically taste the sourness on this thread.

It would hardly be spontaneous - it would be pre-planned, like any other royal visit.

If the Royals really gave a hoot about the nation, they'd be supporting grass roots sport, not sitting in the Royal Box at Wimbledon

What a load of

In which case it's no longer a 'genuine grass roots sports event' is it? It's a royal visit, with all the security constraints that go with it.

And while I know you're only interested in having a go at certain royals, given that any number of 'genuine grass roots sports event' happen every day up and down the country, how is one royal visit going to make a difference?

Sethera · 13/07/2024 19:32

No, I mean actually being present at genuine grass roots sports events, rather than playing with tennis champions or attending charity bashes.

She has. Have a look at Grassroots tennis. Chucking bean bags around running relays with teenagers playing grassroots tennis. She's visited plenty of schools and sports and youth clubs and entered into the spirit playing hockey, netball, archery, table tennis.

The higher profile events, the tennis with Roger Federer and Emma Radicanu, the events with Judy Murray, raise the profile of charities set up to help grassroots sport.

You don't like her, for a lot of totally spurious 'reasons' reason, so nothing she does is ever going to be good enough.

I said 'Royals' in the plural - there's scope for multiple visits.

They take an existing grass roots event - say, weekly teenagers' football session - and arrange to be present. Think of the boost to morale that would give. But, no, they would rather be in luxury surroundings at an elite event.

Oh, so like the time Kate joined Judy Murray at Craigmount High School in Edinburgh to join in drills and games with the students as part of a tennis skills day, then?

WolfFoxHare · 13/07/2024 19:54

Give it a rest. Are you seriously saying you expect them to pitch up at a random weekly teenager’s football session? You’d be complaining they were making it all about them and their entourage was getting in the way of the kids’ parents. Admit it, whatever they’d do would be wrong as far as you’re concerned.

Do you have any idea of the logistics that go into a royal visit? It would be very disruptive to the 'grass roots' sports event.

And royals do visit 'grass roots' places all the time. For every glamorous event, there are several more 'mundane' engagements. You don't have to like Kate or any of the royals, but it's disingenuous to pretend that your real concern is for 'grass roots' sports, rather than having a go at her.

No, not like that! Sort of like that but different, so that she can carry on carping they’ve done it wrong.

TroysMammy · 13/07/2024 20:11

I wonder what will the news in Montecito be tomorrow?

SentebalesChair · 13/07/2024 20:18

Absolutely Anita

People with a tiny bit of compassion, understanding and awareness get it.

You are wasting your breath with some folk here though.

I unfortunately have less understanding and compassion for the poisonous.

And while I would never wish the misery of cancer on anyone, I wouldn’t rush to sympathise if some of the nasty gobshites on here had to have a life lesson on how shit it all is first hand.

And can I just say, how refreshing it is to see so many decent folk commenting - Republicans and Royalists alike.

AliceOlive · 13/07/2024 20:19

She’s should be driving random children to practice each week. Why isn’t she doing that? Right @Sethera ? She could pick them up on her way to chemo. Don’t tell me she can’t set the exact times herself!

I suspect you know nothing about grass roots sport. I help run a swim club. We are all volunteers. We don’t need the logistical headache of an unnecessary royal visit, thanks.

AnnieMcFanny · 13/07/2024 20:23

It will be lovely to see her and I’m very happy she’s well enough to be at the tennis.

Providing transport to help children attend sports events would certainly be a better use of money than laying on private jets to fly the supposedly environmentally-conscious RF around the world.

Let's hear it for Catherine, all together now, for a bit of Schrodinger's Stalwart karaoke:

Unjustified and ancient 🎶
She's wrong to roam the land
Unjustified and so ancient
She needs to understand

If they call her up 'bout Wimbledon
And say "Katie, stand by the jams"
She should stay at home with her hats, frocks and pumps
But do some hard work coz the stalwarts said 'jump'

La La Land
La La Land
All aboard for La La Land 🎶

But William should have flown to the other side of the world and back on 3 days’ notice for the Women's World Cup? Oh, hang on, not being an environmental hypocrite was one of the reasons he didn’t do that! You should applaud him!

I don't think anyone, Royal or not, should fly anywhere for the sake of watching a football match.

MrsLeonFarrell · 13/07/2024 20:40

I'm getting dizzy watching all the goalposts careering around.

Not even if it’s the Inverness Rovers under 12s boys v the Aberdeen Cougars under 13s girls’ squad? Got to support those grass roots , no?
