FFS give the girl a break. I wish that everyone could have first class care, I wish that everyone could go sick on full pay when they need it, I wish that everyone could have nice day out when they've been unwell. Its not the PoW fault that this is not the way our world is organised, and I don't blame her for taking advantage of the opportunity to watch a bit of tennis if she feels up to it.

It is not the POW's fault, no.

but why is her sitting at a tennis match worthy of a thread? it isn't. Most people in her situation have done thousands of times more than she has done.

literally THOUSANDS of times as much work and effort and resilience - only to get labelled "lesser mortals" - which is a hurt that will never go away, I feel. And here we go again, with a whole thread, just because she is sitting at a tennis match

I wish her well, of course I do. It is not her I have an issue with, but the adulation of someone doing something very very very trivial, at the expense of others who are battling away with enormous strength and courage every day

@TinklySnail a journalist used that phrase in an article after PoW attended Trooping the Colour.

It's obvious this is an excuse to pull up this again 😂

I am not saying she is lazy and should be at work. I am saying she is immensely privileged, and the anger and distress stirred up by the praise she gets for sticking her big toe out the door, and the derision poured on other cancer suffers has turned many many mild neutral people into ardent republicans.

An ill made comment made about the Princess of Wales by a journalist has turned many neutral people into ardent republicans? I find that very hard to believe. What does a comment made by a non-royal have to do with becoming a republican? They cannot control what is said about them, despite how much they try.

I understand your comment about sick pay but again that’s not really a royal family issue. We should be petitioning the government to provide adequate support and pay for those who are unable to work due to sickness. Hopefully the new government will already be working on this.

Are people actually being serious?

It is allowed to leave the house when off sick work you know and watching a tennis match is hardly taxing. It's perfectly normal to go out now and again, even when off work sick.

I'm no fan of the Royals myself, but I am human therefore understand the above 🙈

ARichtGoodDram · 13/07/2024 10:51

I think the fact it’s an outdoor event will be a part of the reason she’s going - much safer than being in a small room with people potentially passing on bugs and colds.

Also Wimbledon has security protocols all in place for player and VIP safety already, easy access and the likes. A last minute decision to go won’t make an impact on anyone else. Kate has presented the trophies before so no need for practise runs or anything like that.

Deciding last minute to go, or not go, to a small event hosted by a group would be asking people to put in a lot of work with no guarantee she’d be up to it on the day.

Motheranddaughter · 13/07/2024 10:52

Hope this is a sign the treatment is going well

MuscariFan · 13/07/2024 10:53

As others have said, she is an LTA patron, so it is work as well as enjoyment, one assumes. They are also not confirming her attendance at events until very close to them, so I guess things are still touch and go as to whether she’ll be up to them?

I don’t imagine any of us would be on top of the world with the very significant health issues she seems to have had, and it’s just a fact of life that she doesn’t NEED to work for a crust. Many folk with their wealth don’t do a stroke of work, so not sure why anyone would think she’d be slogging away?

MartyFunkhouser · 13/07/2024 10:53

Nothing against Kate, but I’m really hoping it won’t result in a sea of ‘isn’t she amazing for showing up when she has cancer’ bollocks.

PrincessMee · 13/07/2024 10:54

@thebluebeyond you have NO IDEA what her " situation" is regarding her cancer. Cancer covers a wide range of conditions and each is individual to a person. I'm not going to go further into this aspect as it can be distressing for some readers. You however have no idea what she has gone/ is going through so your comments are not based in truth. You are being distasteful but I expect you know that.

@thebluebeyond I know people who have been signed off sick whilst undergoing chemo

Yeh, i'm a lowly civil servant but colleagues of mine got 183 days off full pay before, if required, 183 days at half pay. (These are the rules in ireland but v similar structure to the UK, so I'd be interested to see how british cs operates wrt sick pay) Obviously that's with evidence that you're really having chemo/radio, recovering.

Grapesichord · 13/07/2024 10:55

@thebluebeyond
Yougov disagrees with the notion that Catherine coping with cancer has turned people into 'ardent republicans'.
She is a popular royal. In fact YouGov found she is the most popular Royal.
https://yougov.co.uk/ratings/politics/popularity/royalty/all
However, nasty comments about her and coping with cancer will make most people feel even more protective of her.
It is so controlling to suggest that someone undergoing chemo should not be allowed some treats. Perhaps you had better start a campaign to suggest any one off sick with a potentially terminal illness should not be allowed to leave the house.
I would feel so upset about anyone suggesting that someone with cancer be treated in the way that you suggest.

I'm glad she's feeling well enough to do this now. Hopefully this means she'll be back to her normal duties. Otherwise, I agree it doesn't look good - it looks like she's just choosing to do the things she enjoys best. Either she is well enough to be out and about, or she's not - she can't just choose her favourite engagements!

Edited

Why should someone who has faced death not spend some time enjoying life?

crumblingschools · 13/07/2024 10:57

@thebluebeyond this is RF thread, what are you expecting. People are going to start threads on PoW, especially when she has been out of the limelight for so long.

People are happy that she feels able to start doing things. Like I would be happy for a friend if they were in the same position. In fact a friend who had been given weeks to live is currently hiking up mountains after a new treatment had a miraculous outcome. I am in awe of her, especially as I am sitting on my fat backside and am in no fit state to hike up a mountain. But I wouldn’t start a thread on her as no-one knows her! Also like PoW she was able to take time off work and in fact has been able to still not go back to work and is currently living her best life. Don’t begrudge her anything after what she has been through

How unreasonable of her.

I would vote to abolish the monarchy if it ever came to it. But this feels like criticising for the sake of it.
I know people who've been off work for months with cancer - are they not allowed to go out and do something they enjoy?

PrincessMee · 13/07/2024 10:58

Gosh you really know people whose heads are turned easily by a random journalist @thebluebeyond ?

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 13/07/2024 10:58

Oof, what an awful thing to say. I hope the journalist apologised for being so ignorant.

It was Alison Pearson, so I would assume she did not.

Grapesichord · 13/07/2024 10:59

I agree with @PrincessMee
These negative comments are so distasteful.
I also hate the NHS cancer treatment is so rubbish comments. In my experience the great majority of NHS hospitals are wonderful when treating cancer patients.

PersonallyVictimizedByReginaGeorge · 13/07/2024 10:59

In the British Civil Service, sick pay entitlement varies based on the length of service and the date of appointment. Here are the details:

TheTripThatWasnt · 13/07/2024 11:00

It's not the same as a 'normal' person making an appearance in the midst of chemo though. She'll have to get dressed up to the nines, with full hair and make up (not just throwing on something comfy) and will have the cameras of the world's media trained on her for 4 hours or so. We won't see that of course, but there will definitely be cameras pointing at her for the entire match, and the tabloids will be looking for any minor point to pick on/judge. Not quite a casual trip to a sporting event to enjoy a bit of well-deserved downtime or normality.

I'm glad she's going. I hope she truly feels well enough to, and isn't doing it out of some sense of duty.

Mrsjayy · 13/07/2024 11:00

thebluebeyond · 13/07/2024 10:26

bully for her - two days work in the last 6 months? Most people in her condition have to work constantly.

The people I knew who were receiving cancer treatment were off work sick, maybe the people you know were self employed or something.

TheTripThatWasnt · 13/07/2024 11:01

Interesting that she's going to the men's final, not the women's (which would be shorter, and an easier gig).

Lindy2 · 13/07/2024 11:01

I'm glad she feels well enough to attend.

I hope she has a lovely day.

Do you know how long it is going to be? Do you know if she is going to sit through the game?

BeaSure · 13/07/2024 11:04

..good luck to her. I'm glad she's feeling well enough to attend. I hope she has a great time.

Hear! Hear! Wonder if she'll bring Charlotte- another tennis fan.
