King's message to the England squad

"My wife and I join all our family in wishing you the warmest congratulations on reaching the final of the U.E.F.A. European Championship - and in sending our very best wishes for Sunday’s match.

If I may encourage you to secure victory before the need for any last minute wonder-goals or another penalties drama, I am sure the stresses on the nation’s collective heart rate and blood pressure would be greatly alleviated!

Good luck, England.

Charles R"

I think it's great and interesting to see more personality and humour coming through in a message like this.

I agree! Thought it was a great message, so well written.

Vespanest · 11/07/2024 13:25

It made me chuckle as he is certainly not wrong.

Exactly, he's spot on! I made a promise to myself years ago that I would never, ever watch another England penalty shootout and it has survived when many other resolutions have gone to the wall.

I could never see the late Queen saying something like this.

I think he captured the mood of fans well.

Collexifon · 11/07/2024 13:44

I hope they don't listen to him and that they play in the way they want to.

Do you think they prefer not to score goals early on?

No, alas now that the King has spoken they're legally obliged to do as he says. Their choice was to lose on penalties but now they have no choice but to win it early.

Collexifon · 11/07/2024 13:46

I think the king should generally butt out of most things tbh, particularly things he knows fuck all about.

Puffinfoot · 11/07/2024 13:46

That's interesting because all the clips I've seen only shown the first part, which I thought was a bit dry. The whole thing is very well done.

Really?

Spirallingdownwards · 11/07/2024 13:48

Are you sure that was real because the format I saw it in suggests it wasn't

PiffleWiffleWoozle · 11/07/2024 13:49

That would really piss me off if I was on the team. Easy to know how to win a football match from the sidelines.

Yes, the one I saw had the signature after the first paragraph?

Collexifon · 11/07/2024 13:50

MitskiMoo · 11/07/2024 13:48

Really?

Yes, of course. They are trained professionals and don't need silly jokey advice from some rich bloke who has never played a game of football in his life.

PiffleWiffleWoozle · 11/07/2024 13:50

Is it real?

Collexifon · 11/07/2024 13:51

It not being real is far more likely tbh. It's a silly addition otherwise.

pocketheart · 11/07/2024 13:52

You do all realise he didn't write it?
I despair if you don't 🤦🏻‍♀️

https://www.royal.uk/news-and-activity/2024-07-10/the-kings-message-to-the-england-football-team-following-their

It's real and widely reported. Good on the King. I think it's excellent.

Collexifon · 11/07/2024 13:57

Well, it made me cringe myself inside out. If it makes people happy then OK.

I'd imagine a few of the team thought oh fuck off.

AnnieMcFanny · 11/07/2024 14:03

I thought it was great.

I don't find it impossible to believe he wrote it, or at least signed off on it. The late Queen would have sent a similar message, sans joke. Whoever penned it, it shows a different style emerging and that is interesting, to some of us at least.

Watching William shouting and punching the air at the Switzerland match certainly makes me think we have a future King who is a fan (either that or he is an enormous loss to Hollywood)

I think that applies to at least half the population of the country, not just Charles, TBF.

MrsLeonFarrell · 11/07/2024 14:09

It's interesting to see a more informal style gradually emerging from the palace. It doesn't really matter whether the King wrote the words or just signed off on them, it still reflects the kind of Monarch he is choosing to be. Having watched the last two matches, I completely agree with him.

pocketheart · 11/07/2024 14:53

I'm not suggesting it isn't 'real' but there's no way your King (he's not mine thank goodness) wrote it - I understand a little more why people adore the royal family when such naivety is displayed!!

And yes, I imagine a lot of players rolled their eyes at such a load of patronising rubbish.
