"My wife and I join all our family in wishing you the warmest congratulations on reaching the final of the U.E.F.A. European Championship - and in sending our very best wishes for Sunday’s match.

If I may encourage you to secure victory before the need for any last minute wonder-goals or another penalties drama, I am sure the stresses on the nation’s collective heart rate and blood pressure would be greatly alleviated!

Good luck, England.

Charles R"

I think it's great and interesting to see more personality and humour coming through in a message like this.

Be more Jack and Victor!

@PrettyFlyforaMaiTai 😂that must have been some party after the Restoration. I'm thinking several months of sore heads 😆

Restoration day was actually made a public holiday until the mid 1800s. It was also called Oak Apple day (the type of tree Charles II hid in) and Pinch-Bum-Day (if you didn’t wear a spirg of Oak Apple you might get your bum pinched, like Charles II to keep him awake and stop him falling out of said tree!). It is still celebrated by the Chelsea Pensioners (the Royal Hospital was founded by Charles II) as Founders Day, and some small rural communities continue to celebrate it too.

DelectableMe · 11/07/2024 20:52

Fascinating, @PrettyFlyforaMaiTai !
I'm going to petition Parliament to bring back Oak Apple Day and pinching!
That would give the misery guts folk something to moan about. Yay 😊!

Attacking Charles because he sent a funny and appropriate message to the England team (current custodians of the national sport) is a new and somewhat strange twist in republican feeling, considering it is the game that a big percentage of the population follow to one degree or another, or at least get behind at times.

Only I do agree, very much Puritanism. I can sense the wide white collars and pursed lips from here. It'll be Christmas next, I tell you. That worked out so well last time.

They must hate the theatre. Dame Judy Dench must really fucking wind them up.

Some of the comments on here 🙄

As for it being patronising considering the last couple of games, it's absolutely spot on.

I've always been so impressed by the pundit, Alex Scott. The struggles she had, coming from a broken family in East London, abused by men and boys when she practised in the park - undaunted. Strong and proud.

I absolutely love her. She was a brilliant player for club and country. She put up with a lot of abuse when she got per punditry role on Sky, but undaunted she carried on. She did one of the best Paso Dobles ever on Strictly. She’s funny and super smart in her field of knowledge. And she’s gorgeous and I love her style. I can really recommend her Who Do You Think You Are? episode. Fascinating history, Jewish on her mother’s side (with an anti fascist movement ancestor during the Brick Lane riots) and on her father’s side, the oft untold history of black ancestors who were also slave owners. She’s terribly brave to have not covered that up.

DelectableMe · 11/07/2024 21:37

I saw it! Her mum's side of the family were East End Jews who took on Mosley's Blackshirts! Amazing. Yes, it was also interesting that the Jamaican side were slave owners.
She's brilliant.

Does one "wish" someone congratulations? I suppose it is the King's English....

DelectableMe · 11/07/2024 22:08

Yes, you can wish someone congratulations.

The sport of the working class, the heart and soul of many working class communities, the pathway out of poverty for many working class boys and girls, a chance for kids from the black community in particular to become superstars. 4 out of 5 of our penalty takers against Switzerland were black. Teams like France fielding all black teams, against the backdrop of a country gripped by ultra right wing politics. Teams like Switzerland fielding multi cultural teams for the first time and being all the stronger for it, showing immigration as a success story rather than a political ignition point. Footballers like Alex Scott and Marcus Rashford passing it on and looking out for the next generation. Football is one of the few elite level sports that is full of men and women from humble backgrounds. Shame on this post.

Speaking as an American, my father, the first of his family to be born in the US, put himself through college on a US football scholarship and eventually coached his local high school team. William may have been cheering UK football but I could totally relate to him.

JADS · 12/07/2024 07:07

What King Charles said has been said up and down the country for the last 3 weeks! I would say it makes him pretty relatable.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 12/07/2024 07:10

Well I don’t think my nerves or blood pressure could stand another game like last Saturday tbh! So I agree with him.

Ratsoffasinkingsauage · 12/07/2024 07:25

Good Lord some people are sad, joyless, bitter husks. Trot off to CelebBitchy if you want to be so negative.

I thought it was a nice message. And if he’s not your king maybe try not to comment.

Yes - they take the prize for mean-spirited, curmudgeonly, puritanical, po-faced and frankly, desperate negativity.

Some people....I'm glad I don't know them IRL!

DelectableMe · 12/07/2024 17:41

God. Can you imagine working with some of them?!

I was watching The Rest Is Football earlier with Gary Lineker and the other lads from Match Of The Day, and he pretty much said the same as King Charles about the last minute dramas not being good for the heart or mind.

De-rail, but I hope Camilla sent a quiet little message to the England Mens' Cricket Team today.
