"My wife and I join all our family in wishing you the warmest congratulations on reaching the final of the U.E.F.A. European Championship - and in sending our very best wishes for Sunday’s match.

If I may encourage you to secure victory before the need for any last minute wonder-goals or another penalties drama, I am sure the stresses on the nation’s collective heart rate and blood pressure would be greatly alleviated!

Good luck, England.

Charles R"

I think it's great and interesting to see more personality and humour coming through in a message like this.

Well according to a pp, that’s Edward’s job. Fuck knows why.

I think it was a joke - Duke of Edinburgh, Scotland not cheering England on.

One is reminded of Julie Burchill's idea of hell 4 drunken fat blokes in a car on the way to a football match talking crap. All this synthetic alcohol and drug fueled anger at watching overpaid prima donnas kick a ball about for 90 minutes. No thanks.

I can't stand football but I don't object to anyone else enjoying it!

I think the king should generally butt out of most things tbh, particularly things he knows fuck all about.

Did you have a sense of humour bypass?

TheFirmBiscuit · 11/07/2024 16:18

Hopefully the Duke of Edimburgh will do the right thing and support Spain.

Why??????!!

DelectableMe · 11/07/2024 18:25

This is all a bit Puritanical! I've no interest in football, but if it brings joy, I can't see a problem. Some folks are so uptight 😂

Ah, thank you. Oblique indeed!

Ah ok. It's not very funny is it?

In that case, perhaps the Prince of Wales should be doing the same...??

Yirk · 11/07/2024 18:32

FGS it's humour, does anybody remember laughter?😀

I only laugh when something is funny. That's not.

Isn't he president (or something...) of the FA?

Ah, that makes sense. (Although the Scottish people I know don't indulge in such petty nonsense).

Yes, AFAIK. He also seems to be really into football too.

My late dad RIP said it all went to shit when Brian Clough broke the same wages for all the clubs so players lived played and died for the town they were born in. His hero was Sir Tom Finney Preston North End and would shout at the tele when Geoge Best got up to his theatrics. He would see the modern game as something totally alien to his working class values and roots. But then I'm a joyless republican citizen of everywhere and nowhere - who will avoid any drinking dens tomorrow like the plague. I imagine police leave is cancelled as well not a problem we have with Wimbledon or the golf.

The game is on Sunday.

Brian Clough helped to fund the anti Nazi League and was a real socialist. He was also a pretty good football manager.

George Best was objectively a brilliant player. My late Dad, who played for the RAF and was scouted for a then First Division club (National Service got in the way) thought so, anyway.

ETA then First Division, would now be Premiership.

Asks self how this started with KC's message and has digressed into the merits of divers footballers of earlier generations. On the RF board.

Mumsnet, never change.

My dad loved Nottingham Forest and loved Brian Clough. Nottingham was where he lived when he first came to the UK. Clough was a brilliant manager and a truly decent man. Absolutely no need to drag his name through the mud to cover up anti working class sentiment (just to poke at King Charles - pathetic).

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 11/07/2024 19:25

Good luck to your average inner city kid being able to rise up through golf!

DelectableMe · 11/07/2024 19:26

I know, @Uricon2 - it's so funny 🤣!
First there's outrage and spitting feathers that the Head of State should send a note of congratulation to a national team, then outrage that there is a team and that they play football!
Do you think it's the damp weather playing havoc with people's equilibrium?!

Glad I'm not the only one who remembers what Cloughie really was.

Absolutely. That wage parity sounds spot on.
Football is still an opportunity for working class boys and girls to move away from limitations and have an incredible international career.
