"My wife and I join all our family in wishing you the warmest congratulations on reaching the final of the U.E.F.A. European Championship - and in sending our very best wishes for Sunday’s match.

If I may encourage you to secure victory before the need for any last minute wonder-goals or another penalties drama, I am sure the stresses on the nation’s collective heart rate and blood pressure would be greatly alleviated!

Good luck, England.

Charles R"

I think it's great and interesting to see more personality and humour coming through in a message like this.

@smilesy @Pleasebeafleabite
I'm generally full of joy but unfortunately after a full morning at my local food bank I don't see the 'funny side' of a pathetic thread about your over privileged, lazy and frankly embarrassing royal family.

Do you live in the Uk?

socialdilemmawhattodo · 11/07/2024 19:33

I only saw the message on this thread and thought it's light sarcastic tone was very funny. The Queen was well known to have a strong sense of humour and it is actually rather lovely to finally see Charles coming into his own. I doubt very much the National (English) team rolled their eyes or Gareth Southgate felt he was likely to be replaced soon.

Hopefully the Duke of Edimburgh will do the right thing and support Spain.

Don't be ridiculous. Ps It is Edinburgh.

Absolutely. That wage parity sounds spot on.
Football is still an opportunity for working class boys and girls to move away from limitations and have an incredible international career.

Quite. A true football lover might hate the corporate razzamataz that surrounds the game. But the game itself and the players who have worked so hard to get to the top? Nope.

PrincessMee · 11/07/2024 19:42

Uricon2 · 11/07/2024 19:22

Asks self how this started with KC's message and has digressed into the merits of divers footballers of earlier generations. On the RF board.

Mumsnet, never change.

Edited

It's because people are bristling about the failure of Meghan and Harry to produce anything substantial to their credit and because there has been criticism of Harry and his new card. It really is that simple and pathetic

PrincessMee · 11/07/2024 19:43

His new award...

DelectableMe · 11/07/2024 19:44

I've always been so impressed by the pundit, Alex Scott. The struggles she had, coming from a broken family in East London, abused by men and boys when she practised in the park - undaunted. Strong and proud.

DelectableMe · 11/07/2024 19:45

Can you imagine the response on here if the King hadn't sent a message?! How do we think that would have gone....🤔

Definitely understand but please know there is nothing wrong with needing the food bank. 💐

My guess is that Gareth and the team will be buoyed by a message from the King
They have certainly been singing the National Anthem with great gusto!!

ArcaneWireless · 11/07/2024 19:59

I laugh at folk who think all Scottish people hate England.

Or should not support England.

Have a word wi yersels.

Don’t ye have enough hate to spew without inducing more?

Mon England. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

For those thinking they know it all, the game is actually on Sunday.

And I’m sure most ‘drinking dens’ would not want a joyless, hateful gobshite in them.

Rainbowsponge · 11/07/2024 20:02

SundayTulips · 11/07/2024 13:45

Do you think they prefer not to score goals early on?

😂😂😂😂

DelectableMe · 11/07/2024 20:03

Indeed! I hope everyone has a good laugh in the "drinking dens" - they were all closed by Cromwell of course, but re-opened in the Glorious Revolution of 1660!

ArcaneWireless · 11/07/2024 20:06

It is a shame the Glorious Revolution didn’t insist on an oubliette in each den.

It might have come in fucking handy.

Uricon2 · 11/07/2024 20:13

Attacking Charles because he sent a funny and appropriate message to the England team (current custodians of the national sport) is a new and somewhat strange twist in republican feeling, considering it is the game that a big percentage of the population follow to one degree or another, or at least get behind at times.

Only I do agree, very much Puritanism. I can sense the wide white collars and pursed lips from here. It'll be Christmas next, I tell you. That worked out so well last time.

If they had their way, the Major Generals would be confiscating meat from people's ovens and dancing would be a sin!

Reminds me of the Horrible Histories ‘King of Bling’ lyrics

King Charles, my daddy
Lost his throne and kings were banned
They chopped off his head
Then Olly Cromwell ruled the land
Old Olly wasn’t jolly
He was glum, and he was proud
Would be miserable as sin
Only sinning’s not allowed!

When Olly died, the people said
‘Charlie, me hearty!
Get rid of his dull laws
Come back, we’d rather party! ‘
This action’s what they called
The monarchy restoration
Which naturally was followed
By a huge celebration!

ArcaneWireless · 11/07/2024 20:29

The Major Generals would probably have every bastard living on jam.

DelectableMe · 11/07/2024 20:31

@PrettyFlyforaMaiTai 😂that must have been some party after the Restoration. I'm thinking several months of sore heads 😆

GingerScallop · 11/07/2024 20:32

Collexifon · 11/07/2024 13:57

Well, it made me cringe myself inside out. If it makes people happy then OK.

I'd imagine a few of the team thought oh fuck off.

Do we really have to have so space for a laugh or a giggle? It's good to relax sometimes. To roll back the criticism and negativity. Even when you are perfect, something the king is very far from, unlike you

ArcaneWireless · 11/07/2024 20:33

Hope MajorGenerals Allow Line Dancing

King's message to the England squad
DelectableMe · 11/07/2024 20:34

Of course, being Sabbath observant, they banned most things on a Sunday, so all this football playing, enjoyment and populating the drinking dens would be quite shocking (and obviously still is to some)!
