Part 6 of positive threads, delving into all things Meghan and Harry. Whether it’s the causes they support, their business initiatives, or Meghan’s fashion choices (Harry’s too, on occasion 😉), there’s plenty to discuss Just a pro-tip - that there may be use of MLE terms and discussions of dupes - you might want to exit stage left if these things offend. This is a relatively drama free zone - let’s keep things light! Clinking a glass of lemonade 🥂 to @queentim for the original inspiration.

And because the SS is now going after both Tinubu and her daughter. Who needs that? So a nice “it wasn’t my intention” is just the right and diplomatic way out.

Is this happening ?

Wickedlywearynamechanged · 31/05/2024 09:16

@smilesyI think it was AP who first pulled that photo. But yes, connected to AFP I think. I don’t think AP have any vendetta against the RF or any agenda to protect Meghan.

AnnieSF · 31/05/2024 08:22

Is this happening ?

Yes. Her daughter is a model, so the SS have been deliberately clipping photos of her on the catwalk in revealing outfits to criticise her.

They've tagged her, her mother and her model agency in abusive posts.

Kate was in a student fashion show - not an 'official' visit to a foreign nation. No-one's saying Meghan's dresses were inappropriate for all occasions - just not the Nigeria visit. As the First Lady hinted, they'd be fine in Hollywood or at the Met Gala.

I assume that Meghan's wardrobe misjudgements were a result of her unwillingness to seek or act on advice. I'm sure, if she'd asked someone in the know they could have made some useful suggestions - eg wear a wrap with that,

But I think Meghan does get it wrong, strangely, quite often. She's got a model figure but somehow...it doesn't quite come off. I'm guessing it's the lack of a stylist or external adviser.

Official visit? How can it be an official visit if they are not working royals anymore and plenty was said that they are going but not in any official capacity

AnnieSF · 31/05/2024 12:15

Thanks @MrsFinkelstein

'I don’t agree with the last two posters. I cannot credit the First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, who also held political office in her own right for 10 years, would be cowed in any way by the Sussex Squad'

The Squaddies are attacking her daughter - vilely abusive messages on her daughter's social media and on her daughter's agency's social media.

And there is absolutely no way her speech was originally misinterpreted.

WibblyWobblyJane · 31/05/2024 17:47

I don’t think she’s cowed at all. Just realized there’s nothing beneficial in making a further deal of it.

And if the squadies didn’t believe she was dissing Meghan, they wouldn’t be attacking her.

Wickedlywearynamechanged · 31/05/2024 20:15

That video is over 50 minutes long. Can you tell me at what point he said that?

WibblyWobblyJane · 31/05/2024 20:17

The entire video is him bitching about Remi Tinubu.

Would you wear that style of dress to visit a school 🤔

It was fine.

@Tizzwazz How much freedom of speech is really permitted in Nigeria? Just wondering.

@Tizzwazz How much freedom of speech is really permitted in Nigeria? Just wondering.

How much freedom exists in the UK regarding the imposition of a monarchy on all of its people? I do wonder…

Regarding Nigeria, it has a long way to go:

”“I expect government to denounce any abuse of the inalienable rights of individual Nigerians who suffered so much in the hands of the military in the past. Democracy guarantees freedom of expression and freedom to live your life without suppression. If we continue like this, we may end up having a police state.””

https://www.vanguardngr.com/2024/05/human-rights-pushback-over-arrests-of-journalists-free-speech/

“Freedom of Expression and MediaIn May, a Nigerian Court found that the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), the country’s broadcast regulator, has no power to impose fines on broadcast stations. In April, NBC had fined Channels Television 5 million Nigerian naira (about US$6,500) for allegedly violating the NBC code in a program during which a vice presidential candidate called on the authorities not to swear in Bola Tinubu.
Although the Nigerian Constitution guarantees the right to freedom of expression, thought, and conscience, insult to religion remains a criminal offense and Sharia (Islamic law), applicable in 12 northern states, criminalizes blasphemy. Blasphemy-related accusations and killings remain a concernin northern Nigeria. In June, Usman Buda was attacked and killed by a mob in Sokoto State for alleged blasphemy against the Prophet Mohammed.”

https://www.hrw.org/world-report/2024/country-chapters/nigeria

The Nigerian constitution does have laws to protect freedom of speech and expression which are explicit but these are also limited. Unfortunately, those laws are not upheld in certain regions or applied to the LGBTQ communities.

As stated in the report below, the country is seen as “partly free”.

…so well done Meghan for dressing in beautiful clothes. Sends a powerful message to any woman or man who wants to subjugate females through the policing of their attire. You looked elegant, fresh and romantic in the peach dress.

I was actually thinking that H & M were invited by the head of the military so regardless of true feelings, the school is going to follow the party line, so to speak.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 01/06/2024 14:04

How much freedom exists in the UK regarding the imposition of a monarchy on all of its people? I do wonder…

The royal family is and has been criticised and lampooned pretty freely in the media over decades (and even before that if you look at the cartoons of Gillray). And given that the monarchy has been around for about 1,500 years with minor upheavals and removals of kings when the monarch did something the people really didn't like, and that when they had the chance for a republic the people of Britain said 'Nah, we'll have a king back, thanks,' I'm not at all sure that 'imposition' is the word you want.

In any case, going by the late queen's statement that 'if they want us to go we'll go quietly,' the RF is very well aware of the need for public approval and support. So I'm not seeing any 'imposition.'

smilesy · 01/06/2024 14:26

It was too long and looked a mess. Why would you want to look”romantic” when visiting a school? How’s that not making it all about you and not the people you are visiting? I agree women should not have their clothing “policed” but equally it looks attention seeking and unprofessional to wear a floaty backless dress to visit a school.

I don't think most of her clothes were 'beautiful' but are you suggesting that dressing inappropriately for the occasion was some sort of bizarre political statement? From a person who shows very little interest in anything other than herself?

It was only a matter of time before Nigeria’s First Lady issued a statement that she was DECIDEDLY NOT being critical of Meghan with her nakedness comments.

This was obvious to all but the most committed twisted Meghan-hating keyboard warriors, living in their echo-chamber reciting the usual boring hateful rants about 256 ways Meghan is the world’s most awful person, day-in day-out.

Well, just like for the Archewell delinquency non-story, which so many of them frothed about for the 24-hrs that that nonsense lasted, this should send a clear STFU message:

(From People)

“First Lady of Nigeria Clarifies Comments About Meghan Markle amid False Reports"At no point did she say anything about Meghan's dressing," the office of First Lady Oluremi Tinubu said.

The First Lady of Nigeria is clarifying her remarks after a recent speech was misinterpreted as criticism of Meghan Markle's attire during her visit to the country.

According to the First Lady's office, Tinubu’s reference to the Duchess of Sussex was about her journey to understand her identity and where she came from after Meghan learned she is of Nigerian heritage.

"She meant Meghan appreciates the people we are and hence her coming here," the First Lady’s office said in a statement to AFP Fact Check in a story published on May 30. "At no point did she say anything about Meghan’s dressing."

The clarification follows inaccurate reports from various media outlets, suggesting that the speech directly criticized the Duchess of Sussex's tour wardrobe.”

END OF.

I didn’t say long dresses weren’t romantic. I said that one was too long (as in fit wise) and looked a mess. And again, why do you need to look “romantic” on a school visit? I’m not sure why you need to be so bloody minded as to wear “what you want” but look out of place 🤷‍♀️
