Somehow, keeping the Monarchy going based on a decision made in the mid 1600s is not something I feel obliged to accept in this day and age.
The Republican movement is growing:
“When I started doing this, people used to say: ‘I agree with what you’re doing, but I don’t think the end of the monarchy will happen in my lifetime,’” says Smith. “Nowadays, people don’t say that. The monarchy no longer looks solid – it looks vulnerable. The spell has been broken.””

I certainly despise the fact that it keeps ‘royal experts’ afloat:

Mostly, our weird monarchy creates a hugely disfunctional ecosystem for the children of the Monarch and their children in turn. To have one sibling heralded over other siblings is just plain daft. Harry, a prince of the blood, continues to thrive, thank goodness, despite the obvious bullying from his older brother who is set to inherit it all.
The monarchy faces a different generation now:
“There is a consistent trend that younger people are less likely than older people to say it is ‘very important’ that Britain has a monarchy. Twelve percent of 18–34-year-olds view the monarchy as ‘very important’ compared to 42% of the 55+ age group”
“In every year that data was collected on the British Social Attitudes survey between 1983-2023, a majority of the public have consistently said it is important for Britain to continue to have a monarchy. However, those who deem the monarchy to be very important has dropped to its lowest point of 29%.”
Certainly, a significant and healthy minority now feel it is not very important or should be abolished as:
“15% said it was ‘not very important’ and 20% said it was ‘not at all important / abolish’.”

No doubt the ‘working royals’ will do what they need to in order to face the challenges ahead.
“The majority of the public still support the royal family, and whilst support tends to be more amongst those aged 55 and over, the challenge going forward will be for the monarchy to deliver its relevance and appeal to a younger generation to maintain this support.”

The imposition is that we can’t have a vote about it. I do not know whether a referendum would ever come to pass.
Go quietly is not a perspective that I share. Harry would not have been given such an appalling time of it by his father and brother if that were in any way true.
