Part 6 of positive threads, delving into all things Meghan and Harry. Whether it’s the causes they support, their business initiatives, or Meghan’s fashion choices (Harry’s too, on occasion 😉), there’s plenty to discuss Just a pro-tip - that there may be use of MLE terms and discussions of dupes - you might want to exit stage left if these things offend. This is a relatively drama free zone - let’s keep things light! Clinking a glass of lemonade 🥂 to @queentim for the original inspiration.

If you had read all of the thread @LumiB you would have seen someone asked for the link to that photo and I was giving it.

Kate was in a student fashion show - not an 'official' visit to a foreign nation. No-one's saying Meghan's dresses were inappropriate for all occasions - just not the Nigeria visit. As the First Lady hinted, they'd be fine in Hollywood or at the Met Gala.

I assume that Meghan's wardrobe misjudgements were a result of her unwillingness to seek or act on advice. I'm sure, if she'd asked someone in the know they could have made some useful suggestions - eg wear a wrap with that,

But I think Meghan does get it wrong, strangely, quite often. She's got a model figure but somehow...it doesn't quite come off. I'm guessing it's the lack of a stylist or external adviser.

A very conservative, older woman lecturing other Nigerians how to dress is a slippery slope. It leads once again to the policing of women in general when it comes to their attire.

Meghan and Harry were invited there in a private capacity but good on them for being able to garner such interest as it makes them so obviously more relevant than some in the media would like.

I loved that ultra long, peach, romantic, soft, airy dress. The school was happy, they were happy. I am happy.

Would you wear that style of dress to visit a school 🤔

WibblyWobblyJane · 30/05/2024 17:07

It comes off a sight better than a California girl who married rich telling young women in a conservative country to emulate her on their path to success.

Serenster · 30/05/2024 17:07

It also demonstrates that taking on a quasi-diplomatic role is full of elephant traps if you don’t know or care what you’re doing.

Also, that “very conservative, older woman” as you describe her is an experienced politician and the First Lady of Nigeria talking about some of the country’s national values. Deciding not to respect her role in a sovereign state because you don’t like her opinions is exactly the kind of slippery slope that wannabe diplomats finds themselves sliding down.

NoNekkidNonNigerians · 30/05/2024 17:46

It would be nice if there were a lot more ‘very conservative older women’ telling young women and girls that they are worth far more than dressing scantily for the delectation of others.

And includes prancing around with suitcases, sucking juice off burgers and turning up half naked to visit schools.

Princessfluffy · 30/05/2024 18:18

I think Meghan and Harry have given up trying to garner any positive publicity for themselves and instead just go for negative attention in order to seem interesting.

Hence the wearing of utterly inappropriate clothing in Nigeria by Meghan.

Or maybe they are just getting on with their lives not caring about the press and people and whether its good or bad since they know that mostly it will be negative besides they haven't come out and said they are trying to gain positive publicity

Princessfluffy · 30/05/2024 18:39

I think it's pretty obvious that they are desperate to stay in the public attention.

NoNekkidNonNigerians · 30/05/2024 18:41

Good job as it would have been met with a snigger or snort or a hearty guffaw.

CoffeeCantata · 30/05/2024 18:52

"Policing".

It's called having an opinion - I'm not claiming to have the power to march in and arrest Meghan!

We're all allowed an opinion but some opinions carry more weight depending on the person and the context. I think in this context the opinion of the First Lady of the nation she was visiting carries more weight than mine or yours!

Whether or not we feel uneasy with some cultural 'rules' about women's clothing, I think if you visit a country with a conservative culture (esp when you're supposed to be ingratiating yourself) then you need to respect it as far as you can. It doesn't have to involve covering yourself head-to-toe - just understanding the traditions and cultural norms. The late Queen wore full-length, long-sleeved gowns when visiting some Muslim countries out of respect. It's just good manners.

But there was no need for Meghan to wear something horrible - her choices just seemed pretty extreme for (shall we say) 'day wear'. OK, she wore a trouser suit and that was better, but she chose to wear very revealing evening gowns during the day - just odd! And is she was wearing full-length to be 'modest' within that context, then that was rather cancelled out by the top halves of her dresses! To me it just didn't make any sense. She reminded me of someone who comes to an event in completely the wrong clothes because they've misunderstood the event.

NoNekkidNonNigerians · 30/05/2024 18:59

Cover up for next time.

I’ll throw in the microphone for nowt - it’ll save the usual undignified grab for one.

I actually don't think so. She's slim but has an apple-type figure and a lot of her outfits look painfully cinched in at the waist. It's like she's trying to create the illusion of a thin waist but you can't help but flinch at how tight and uncomfortable the seams must be. She obviously has a better figure than 99% of women but she doesn't have the naturally tall, tiny waisted type of body that designers typically use for their fittings. Kate does have that and it's one of the reasons she looks effortlessly stunning in all outfits, whereas many of Meghan's outfits look a bit forced or frumpy.

It's not pitting M against K but has a lot more to do with the way fashion designers choose their fitting models. There's a specific body type that displays clothes very well and is used across all high end couture houses. Most expensive clothes look best on tall, slim bodies with waspish waists.

NoNekkidNonNigerians · 30/05/2024 19:12

Sadly she dresses for the shape and height she wants to be.

Not what she is.

She could look fantastic.

She rarely manages it.

Serenster · 30/05/2024 19:29

Kate doesn’t have perfect model proportions either though - she’s tall and slim, yes, but she has a long torso and proportionally short legs (against Meghan’s long legs and short torso). That is not a criticism of either woman - your proportions are what they are, and only a very few women and men will have balanced proportions. If you have those, are tall and thin and striking looking you’d fall into the pretty small sector of the population who could be a catwalk model 😀

Kate is generally better at dressing for her figure, but she does sometimes get it wrong too.

NoNekkidNonNigerians · 30/05/2024 19:42

I think most women have had fashion fails/have forgotten to dress for their shape serenster

These women are no different I agree.

I just think that to have fashion fails so often - more so when you have the means to get advice or have access to outfits that are way out of the budgets of mere mortals - it probably means that you think you know better - even when you clearly don’t.

That or your eyes are broken.

AnnieSF · 30/05/2024 19:54

A new stylist is needed.

Wickedlywearynamechanged · 31/05/2024 01:38

I think this is legit:

AFP - office First Lady Nigeria - re Meghan

The first lady did not comment on the Duchess’s attire. Tinubu’s office also said her comments had been taken out of context. “She meant Meghan appreciates the people we are and hence her coming here,” the office said in an email to AFP Fact Check. “At no point did she say anything about Meghan’s dressing.”Arise News, whose clip was used in the misleading post, also rejected the claim. The footage shows Tinubu commenting that Markle “came looking for her roots,” the broadcaster told AFP Fact Check.**AFP is a legit site according to wiki.

Online post, media misleadingly claim Nigeria’s first lady criticised Meghan’s choice of clothes

The visit of Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle to Nigeria in May elicited a flurry of media attention. It also sparked disinformation when a YouTuber suggested that a video showed Nigeria’s First Lady Oluremi Tinubu berating the Duchess of Sussex...

WibblyWobblyJane · 31/05/2024 02:52

And I think it’s a very soft back peddle. Because it’s not usually done to call attention to someone else’s rudeness.

WibblyWobblyJane · 31/05/2024 02:54

And because the SS is now going after both Tinubu and her daughter. Who needs that? So a nice “it wasn’t my intention” is just the right and diplomatic way out.

BemusedAmerican · 31/05/2024 03:44

Well, now that Tinubu knows what the SS is like, let's see how many invites are sent out to H & M from other countries in Africa.

Wickedlywearynamechanged · 31/05/2024 06:21

I don’t agree with the last two posters. I cannot credit the First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, who also held political office in her own right for 10 years, would be cowed in any way by the Sussex Squad. Nigeria is about 2/3 the size of the U.S.A. in population, and it is over three times bigger than the UK in population. Tinubu looks to be a very a powerful woman.

But it will be interesting to see if other countries do indeed do what with the pp expects might happen ie back off from hosting M&H. I predict that won’t happen. Time will tell and we’ll get our answers.

smilesy · 31/05/2024 08:20

I’m not sure I buy that. Whether she directly criticised what Meghan was wearing or not, she definitely talked about showing too much flesh. I don’t think anyone can deny that Meghan wore dresses that did that. Also, AFP were the first agency that pulled the Mother’s Day photo which may or may not be relevant 🤷‍♀️
