The visit, marked by a series of sporting engagements and heartfelt interactions, was to promote the importance of mental health awareness and support for veterans and active-duty service members. [Invictus Foundation website page on H&M in Nigeria - my added emphasis]

This worries me, this focus from Invictus on the active-duty military, at a time when Israel, Colombia and Nigeria have all joined the Invictus Foundation and two have already started competing. All three of these countries have militaries accused of, and being investigated for, long-term and large-scale abuses including extra-judicial killings of civilians.

If Invictus stops being wholly focused on veterans, and starts offering 'mental health support' (whatever that is) to active-duty soldiers involved in conflicts that are killing thousands of civilians - mosty women and children - then that radically changes the whole purpose of Invictus for me. And if that 'mental health support' is to be delivered through Better Up, for which Harry is the salaried 'Chief Impact Officer', then that is concerning on a number of levels.

I've had mental health treatment recently and I'd feel really fucking offended if Invictus was promoting e.g. 'Acceptance and Commitment' therapy to soldiers implicated in war crimes.

What the hell Johnny Mercer (the Veterans Minister), who has some moral fibre, is thinking by going along with mess I really cannot fathom.

I'm never very enthusiastic about military related charities, but the inclusion of the above mentioned countries, one in particular, has completely put me off Invictus. They and Harry deserve each other.

Did I read Columbia is part of invictus?

Is M’s overarching aim to be US president, I had wondered if Nigeria was paving way & it seems others feel same way. I think she has the skillset.

On H and family history…The history master at Eton H took to be singling him out. ‘Wales, you must know this’ ‘Why must I?’ ‘Because it’s your family’. ‘My family had declared me a nullity, the Spare’. History master gave him a ruler in private with all monarchs on it to refer to at desk. Master said ‘the more I call on you, the more you’ll learn’. H isn’t academically curious at all, going by book.

H thinks the History master had ‘overstepped’ had he? In his own way was he trying to help or spark interest in a subject he was passionate about?

User14March · 14/05/2024 14:48

to add to above AND was master trying to genuinely help H?

Given the quality of current American presidential candidates, I'm not sure if this is a joke or not!

Other matters aside, do you really think a woman who fumed for years over setting the record straight on who made who cry at a toddler's dress fitting could possibly survive an American presidential campaign? It's brutal.

BemusedAmerican · 14/05/2024 15:03

Over the past few months, I've mentioned that people on MN think Meghan will run for president. The comments that I received included "delusional". Harry is a liability, as are the titled kids.

I’d believed anything at this point. I might even vote for Meghan if she ran.

I often try to read our political news and find myself clicking “I’m on” on MN instead.

BemusedAmerican · 14/05/2024 15:16

If anything, her running for office can be used to unify opposition by her opponents. Her only claim comes from her marriage to a dependent of George III, who opposes the First Amendment . Much of the Revolutionary War was fought in NYS and the NorthEast. We have not forgotten:

@IcedPurple I think her ambition & desire for power & to make a genuine difference, as she sees it, knows no bounds. We may see it. You mitigate for your sensitivities & sensibilities as you go & as you evolve.

She can't get the labels to stick to her jam jars yet she's going to be President of the United States?

Maybe that's not all that implausible in the bizarre world of end of empire American politics. I still don't believe it however.

User14March · 14/05/2024 15:51

@IcedPurple who’d have thought an American, ordinary girl one-time tourist outside Buckingham Palace would marry a Prince?

I wonder how far the Canadian people - First Nations and modern Canadians - can be 'curated' for the PR and photo ops of Harry and Invictus before there are protests?

This all has the making of a perfect storm combining the presence of the Israeli IDF (presumably veterans, possibly of Gaza, and active-service military delegates); representatives of big oil, energy and fossil fuel companies as sponsors of Invictus and the friends of many of the visiting dignitaries there; troubled sponsor Boeing (with fingers in pies in Nigeria of course); and some bubbling First Nations issues.

Canadian universities are already volatile and along with US universities are well able to co-ordinate protests. All of this will require detailed tactical & strategic appraisals and risk planning by Invictus and the Israelis will expect to have their own boots on the ground in Canada on that First Nations land.

And that's not even including the shitshow optics of the PR opportunities being grabbed by a number of grifters and arseholes. Oh, and there's the small matter of the intersecting accounts and expenses claims of course, and record keeping ...

And Harry's pal Johnny Mercer, to whom he has recently leaked court-sealed confidential information, won't be the Veterans Minister by the end of this year. He might not even be an MP. No help from there.

Yes and Canada will not have military keeping rigid control as they do in Nigeria keeping out any dissent.

Ofgs some things really are ludicrous and that is one of them. It would be like having Sooty as the President. 😂

jeffgoldblum · 14/05/2024 15:54

Now @AnnieSF , don't go knocking sooty!!
Frankly I think he'd do a much better job .

User14March · 14/05/2024 15:57

I give you Biden & Trump. Say no more.

jeffgoldblum · 14/05/2024 16:01

Which one is a puppet?
And whose hand is in control?
😉

I don’t think Meghan would be able to take the type of questions a political candidate would be asked. JMO. She may think she’d be ok but I’m not so sure.

Sooty was the sensible and calm one. He’d make a great statesman. Sweep was like Donald Trump, full of himself, talked too much and a bit dim. Soo would make a great National Security Advisor, definitely the calm in a crisis and decisive leader type. She’d stop Sweep trying to use the nuclear option.

BemusedAmerican · 14/05/2024 16:18

Harry would slug a reporter early on in the process. Then the press would be out for their blood.

User14March · 14/05/2024 16:19

@WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout she’ll do her homework & mitigate & learn & deflect if needs be. I see her in some major humanitarian role perhaps too. How does Trump or Biden fare?
