I really need someone to explain the 43% Nigerian claim. On the previous thread I asked how this works when Nigerian is a nationality but not an ethnicity, as it is made up of many ethnic groups and tribes. Someone answered that she will have discovered her ethnic group as part of the genealogy.

But when Meghan said that she had discovered she was 43% Nigerian on her podcast she said she hadn't discovered what tribe she comes from yet but wanted to look further into this. So how does it work?

Surely she wouldn't make such serious claims without thorough research? There appeared to be no interest in Nigerian culture during her trip beyond how amazing it makes her.

jeffgoldblum · 13/05/2024 16:14

Not sure @GlitchStitch , apparently she has Maltese dna aswell 🤷‍♀️

BigWillyLittleTodger · 13/05/2024 16:16

Thank you @OneHeartySnail

The depressing thing is that, if she has had a genealogy test giving her a tribal marker, she'll have more in common with the Nigerian populace who are the descendants of the slavery that continued in Nigeria until the 1940s than the elites who have bestowed the princess title on her. One section of these people are called the Osu people, and they continue to suffer discrimination at the hands of the Nigerian elites within Igbo society, under a caste system that bars them from positions of influence. Would an Osu woman be made into a princess?

It's also once again utterly risible to see the fan-girling over royalty by so- called republicans. I would have thought you would have had greater respect for Meghan and Harry giving up titles and entitlement, not taking on even more, and from a highly discriminatory system of governance at that. Meghan could have made an incredible statement of support for the Osu and other struggling and oppressed Nigerians, rather than joining the ranks of another elite.

Abouttimeforanamechange · 13/05/2024 16:31

Thanks for new thread. Copied from previous one:

The 'announcement' was from the army Chief of Staff, who is free to invite whomever he wishes on an informal vist. This was not an official visit of any sort. It's no different to him inviting a C list celebrity.

Do C List celebrities on informal visits get red carpets and national anthems, and get to inspect troops?

They can say it's an unofficial visit as much as they like, but the optics, to use the current buzzword, say something different, and the potential for troublemaking, if they carry on in this way, is enormous. Not that H&M would necessarily set out to cause trouble, but they are too clueless and ill-informed to see the pitfalls and avoid them.

I'm surprised we haven't seen more of her family tree in respect to this trip. I would like to have seen more of Doria's line in the US . Yes it dips into what some consider unsavoury aspects but a timeline would have been good. I know trees were done at the time of Meghan's marriage. I must google them. Does anyone know if Meghan is an active member of the USA Nigerian Women Association? It would make sense for her to hook up with them if she isn't already.

Several years ago, some of my siblings and I had our DNA done by two companies, Ancestry and MyHeritage. We know when our families came to the US since we are descended from relatively recent immigrants. The country that our ancestors came from was invaded very frequently.

Two of us initially showed a relatively high percentage of DNA from a particular European region ( not our known country of origin). Over the years, as the companies received more DNA samples, it was pinpointed to a particular country in that region. Last year, MyHeritage pinpointed it to a particular city in that country, which makes sense if you look at the history of our ancestor's country and the history of the other country.

I had one unexpected country but did a little family research and it turned out to be accurate.

I usually check both DNA results every 6 months to see if anything has been revised. Testing goes on all the time, and the more samples received, the more accurate the results.

This is what has surprised me - so many people lauding her when there are many eminent Nigerian and Nigerian by descent women in USA with notable achievements. How does she hold up in comparison? Sometimes people say on here the press does a number on people - perhaps that is the case here.

BemusedAmerican · 13/05/2024 16:46

@AnnieSF The notable women in the US didn't marry into the RF so their achievements apparently don't count.

Really good point! Why wasn't Doria on the trip? Surely if anyone is a returning Nigerian Princess, 96% Doria should be the one being lauded?

It would make sense if she genuinely wants to explore that heritage, and learn rather than distribute her own wisdom.

On the other hand, if it is just performative it would be a waste of time for everyone involved.

Yes Doria should have been but then she's not involved with Invictus. Perhaps Meghan will take her Mum on a visit seeing as Doria was the first person Meghan called with her DNA results. Doria probably went 🙄 where did you think you were from darling ?

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 13/05/2024 17:59

For an event that was supposed to be about Invictus, there was a whole lot of Meghan princessing and Netflix poloing going on. Anyone know if the official Invictus SM have said anything yet?

Sageyboots · 13/05/2024 18:01

Not being a descendent of the transatlantic slave trade, I can’t imagine the significance of visiting the country where you know your ancestors were taken from, it must be really emotional.

The whole princess thing is a bit random though, by the logic that a DNA test links Meghan to that geographical area, there must be millions of people globally ahead of Meghan in the Nigerian royalty stakes. Is it more like an honorary degree?

I was wondering that as well (although I think Doria is 86%). You'd think they would have extended a warm welcome to the Sussex children as well.

QueenofTheBorg · 13/05/2024 18:05

The Tom Bower book is very interesting on Meghan and her upbringing and how she got to where she is now. I really recommend it, well researched and written and fascinating.

QueenofTheBorg · 13/05/2024 18:10

I also think good for them on Charles handing over Harry's old regiment to William today.

I wonder how it will all pan out? Options are, presumably:

  1. Harry and Meghan carry on doing what they're doing, grifting, doing quasi royal tours, selling jam and their souls to Netflix, RF ignore, ignore, ignore
  2. Harry and Meghan get stripped of their titles, get some kind of cease and desist from the British Govt & Royal Family and have to stand down on the tours of dodgy countries but carry on with the jam etc
  3. Harry leaves Meghan, comes back to the RF, becomes a working royal again, remarries Lady Whatshername from Berkshire, lives happily ever after
  4. Harry & Meghan come to their senses, apologise sincerely, STFU about the RF and fall into obscurity

Number 4 is my preference.

headstone · 13/05/2024 18:38

I’m sure the new princess Meghan will be as useful to the people of Nigeria as she is to the good people of Sussex.

I suspect number 1, but with ever decreasing returns and ever more amusing antics!

I'm not sure that 96% Doria is feeling particularly pleased about her ancestry becoming global gossip.

BemusedAmerican · 13/05/2024 18:50

If Trump wins our election, Nigeria is their only option. I can't see the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or India welcoming them gladly.

MrsLeonFarrell · 13/05/2024 18:56

I don't think anyone ever stepped and stopped what the Dule of Windsor did, with the exception of shipping him off to the Bahamas during the war.

The Sussexes were told in or out and they chose out. This is what out looks like, they do what they want to and the Royal family continues doing what they do. Occasionally the Foreign Office will probably remind people that they have no official standing, depending on where they are visiting, but apart from that I don't believe anyone with real political power is worried about them (and I can't see Russia or China seeing them as a threat to their powerbases).

The working Royals continue to serve the country and the King continues to function as Head of State. Harry and Meghan do things to draw attention to their charities, do whatever it is philanthropic celebrities do, and remain family members who have no official roles.

If the press and social media would stop trying to stir up trouble the whole thing would settle down. I hope in the future the family bonds are restored to whatever extent anyone wants because on a purely human level family strife is painful.

Babybreath · 13/05/2024 18:59

I've just seen this - Meghan and Harry’s Archewell Foundation has been sent a Delinquency Notice.

spanieleyes · 13/05/2024 19:06

That's not good, is it? It means they can't raise or distribute charity funds.
