Nigeria?

Can this be true? That Harry and Meghan are off on a “royal” trip to Nigeria? What’s the game now? My head is spinning!

Jamaica were not holding their hands out for money. They were demanding an apology and reparations for slavery that the Royal Family participated in and benefitted from.

This from a poster who earlier on this very thread, said the members of the Royal Family were just there for the dancing?! So these visits are more political and important than that?! Thanks for finally acknowledging.

I am leaving you to it. I have had enough of the whitesplaining.
If anyone reading is interested in understanding the context you can read the open letter to the Royal Family signed by many prominent Jamaicans here. It explains clearly what they thought about the Royal visit before William and Catherine had even landed in Jamaica.

What's your point?

Royal visits often attract both for and against. Some were clearly against this visit, but there were also large crowds coming out to see them. None of which changes the fact that the visit only took place with the cooperation of all governments concerned.

Speaking of governments, any request for reparations needs to be addressed to them. Not to the then Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who have no power to affect these matters.

For what it's worth, I thought aspects of the Caribbean tour were poorly judged and I'd like to think it would be done more sensitively today. But it was nowhere near the disaster that a certain 'squad' were desperate for.

I guess we're not going to get a photo of that red dress? The one that doesn't exist?

Are you talking about the green dress she wore to a state dinner?

Green is the new red.

The RF is a constitutional monarchy. If they do an.official visit it is at the request (instructions, phrased politely...) of the UK government and the host government.

The 'open letter from Jamaica' was from a number of individual Jamaicans, not the Jamaican government. If the government didn't want the visit they shouldn't have arranged it.

I suspect there were internal political aspects to inviting the visit and then publicly criticising them.

But, I also suspect pointing this out is a waste of time... just wanted to dissociate myself from this particular snail.

Don't blame you. My husband gave off to me the other night because I left Dreamies on the back doorstep. I'd given them to a cat that didn't finish them in fairness. He was complaining that the slugs had eaten them and they had died, because of the salt in the Dreamies...

Funny how that poster announces their departure when asked for said evidence of the red Scarlett O’Hara dress!

ShamedBySiri · 02/05/2024 17:31

Hahahahahaha

Catherine specifically chose a dress to emulate Scarlett O'Hara. I can just imagine the pre-tour outfit planning meeting with her dress designer:

Designer: "So for Jamaica I thought something loose for comfort in the heat with a tropical feel. Maybe a soft silk with a brightly coloured exotic flowered pattern."

Catherine: (stamps foot) "NO, No, no. I need to look like Scarlett O'Hara, reminiscent of the glorious plantations of the past. Red velvet. With a huge skirt. And a corseted waist. 15 inches. Make the waist 15 inches do you hear me?"

Designer: "Won't that be a bit hot in the heat, velvet and corsets?"

Catherine: "oh fiddle dee dee. Do you think I'm fragile and helpless like certain women who shall remain nameless? Lordy. As if anyone needs to ask ME if I’m OK. Anyway, if it gets hot one of the slaves adorable little children can fan me with a big palm leaf.

Make that waist 14 inches”

That, and the link to where the Marley family refused to meet Kate and William. Or where the government didn't invite them.

Thedom · 02/05/2024 17:41

The optics of the jeep ride was terrible, I don't think anyone can claim otherwise, but Scarlett O'Hara 😂😂.

Also, there is video of how that photo with Ziggy Marley came about, and it is the opposite to what you see. Harry was being ushered into the cinema, he spots Ziggy and turns back into the crowd, he has to push his way through the crowd, grab Ziggy by the arm for him to turn around, Harry hugs him, they get a photo taken and immediately Ziggy turns back to what he was doing. So it's not like the family were lining up to meet Harry. On the contrary, Harry had to go out of his way to introduce himself.

Aslo, you do know Bob Marley is dead, hence why C&W were photographed with a cut out photo. Bob didn't magically resurrect himself just because Harry showed up for a film premiere of his life.

Excellent!

Fiddle-de-dee is my go-to expression of exasperation.

Mine is not as polite.

Another looking forward to the appearance of the red dress. I love a big frock.

What the Royal Family wear on official visits matters. The photo opportunities they create send messages.
Maybe the Royal Family and their staff simply are not bright enough to navigate a modern context?

You know who else recreated a Colonial look throughout a tour? Why, that would be Meghan and Harry. Funny no-one had a negative word to say about this incident, though.

I have never seen that photo before Serenster. Was this when they were already President and VP of the Commonwealth?

'Don't cry for me Argentina' vibes, if ever I saw it.

IsoldeWagner · 02/05/2024 18:37

Oh no, look at the pair of them!
Talk about colonial.

I've just had a lovely time looking for pictures of Kate cosplaying Scarlett O'Hara. No sign, but plenty of pics of her looking elegant, appropriate and neatly ironed. Perhaps old Creasy von Mess should take a look, for tips on how to get it right.

Thedom · 02/05/2024 18:42

I am really curious, did that image ever make the UK media, I have never seen it and I followed their Australia /S. Pacific tour (I was a 'fan' then).

I love the multi-coloured sundress she wore on that trip. A genuine vintage number, apparently.

Oh yes - Omid Scobie tweeted approvingly about it. The crowds were going wild, it seems…

(and yes, Meghan and Harry were at the time holding their Commonweath Trust roles)

Oh dear! Think how that ended...

I think I was in the middle of Christmas preps at my DB's and kept running in and out of the kitchen to watch the telly and see how it was panning out. History as it was happening.

One of the most moving things I read afterwards was that after their downfall over Christmas and NY the Rumanians had Christmas candles in their windows to celebrate the birth of Christ. That had been banned for years.

The usual excuse when someone cannot back up what they are alleging.

IsoldeWagner · 02/05/2024 18:51

Oh my god, Omid is shameless!
Harry and Meghan copying the Queen and Philip from about 1956. So regal, they must have loved that.

IsoldeWagner · 02/05/2024 18:53

No, @Abouttimeforanamechange I've no idea about the Scarlett O'Hara reference. Kate seems to be the very opposite of an attention seeking prima donna prone to fainting. Nor has she ever worn a crinoline.

Serenster · 02/05/2024 18:55

When Kate and William recreated QEII and Philip in Jamaica, Omid piously intoned that this is what happens when you don’t have any diversity in your team!

(to be clear I think it is pretty clear that neither couple said that “I’ve had a great idea for the trip!” - this must have been organised largely at the behest of the Fijian and Jamaican governments, Because how would the Wales’ office have even known that Jamaica still had the same official Land Rover and used it a lot for ceremonial parades?)

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 02/05/2024 18:56

Sorry. Can't resist.

MN's not an airport. You don't have to announce your departure.
