William Threatened Tatler and Camilla's niece help plant story

In the audio, the journo explains what happened when she referred to Kate as being thin.
William rang Tatler and The Daily Mail, arranged lunch with them and his staff to plant stories.
Camilla's niece who works at Tatler helped him twisted the true position to be favourable to William and Kate.

She says no British print media is allowed to say anything negative about Kate or William. The negative stories must be about Harry and Meghan.

This story has already been talked about in 2020. Tatler and KP were in conflict for months over this article but let's not try to rewrite history.

I actually read the original article and the problem with the article wasn't just about the "Kate's thin" comment.

The article was called "Catherine the Great" but it was anything but great for Kate. A lot of the article was focused on pitting her against Meghan. It was Kate the great vs Meghan the evil manipulator.

Then, it painted a negative picture of Kate's family basically calling Carole a social-climbing snob, Pippa fake and Kate being bland (which was actually a praise in the article because it made her assimilation into the RF easier). It is implied that Kate is faking her accent to sound more posh

"The Middletons will always have close ranks. None of them can quite believe that they have hit the jackpot."

The article also said that William has a weird obsession with Carole: "She's the mummy he always wanted"

The article then basically paints Kate as a manipulator, the ultimate power player in the family.

"She has a ruthless survival streak, just like the House of Windsor. It's why she is so well-suited. She keeps her head down because the price of being Queen is so great".

Hilary Mantel's comment about Kate being a plastic princess is mentioned

It also mentioned Rose in the article and her falling out with Kate due to Rose's ‘apparent closeness to William’ (Tatler also has several articles on their website about Rose and the affair rumours but I thought evil William and KP forbade the media from talking about it. Last time I checked, Tatler is a British publication).

The article also mentions Kate's weight, saying that "Kate has become perilously thin, just like – some point out – Princes Diana" which basically gave credit to the rumours that have been out there for years that she has an eating disorder

The article then quotes one of her "friends" (we don't know who it is) saying that “Kate is furious about the larger workload. Of course she’s smiling and dressing appropriately but she doesn’t want this. She feels exhausted and trapped. She’s working as hard as a top CEO, who has to be wheeled out all the time, without the benefits of boundaries and plenty of holidays.”

"Kate and William wanted to be hands-on parents and the Sussexes have effectively thrown their 3 children under the bus"

After that, KP threatened to take legal action. They went back and forth for months. In the end, the article was edited

What a load of bollocks! There are no end of negative stories about W&K; they’re lazy, she’s too thin, the affair insinuations, him being criticised for pulling out of the memorial service and hello… did you miss the whole Mother’s Day fiasco?

People - on both sides - really need to engage their critical thinking skills a bit more.

Thanks for that @Nono22972. So, basically, some shit stirring is going on here. Hardly surprising

Another thread quotes the Express saying that if a US Court rules against Harry in the visa case, the president of the US will override the ruling for Harry.

If that happens, that sounds like preferential treatment for Harry to me.

Bit of a shit-show for Harry either way.

And the Heritage Foundation would get what they want, in that the contents of the visa application would presumably end up in the public realm anyway and/or widely talked about (probably pretty negatively).

All because of his own Spare anecdotes for the $$$ and his need for retribution.

Only under a Biden administration so he better get it wrapped up quickly as Trump has other ideas!

I'm not surprised. William has a reputation as a bully.

sashagabadon · 24/04/2024 14:59

William gets a fair bit of negative press so I don’t buy that argument. Kate generally gets great press ( at least until recently) but that is because she genuinely seems nice.
Tatler wrote a v unfair article about Kate a few years ago if I recall. V snobby about her.
i think that might have been Anna Pasternak?

Did you read the account of the whole original article that was posted above? Sounds perfectly reasonable that William threatened legal action to me. Not bullying at all

Another day, another crock of shit.

Anna Pasternak, that utterly credible source. Right.

ArcaneWireless · 24/04/2024 15:20

William has a reputation as a bully.

And yet it isn’t his name that is being linked to bullying at the moment but that of another…

William's not the brother accused of bullying now, is he. Nice try but no cigar.

BemusedAmerican · 24/04/2024 15:27

H & M's supporters are bullying a food bank yet they say nothing.

The British media obviously didn't get the memo. 🙄

They could both be. Did that ever occur to you? Or are you so gullible that you all buy into a story of sides and one being right and the other wrong.

MummyJ12 · 24/04/2024 15:39

As @BemusedAmerican rightly points out: The Sussex Squad are openly bullying a food bank;
as well as a 6 year old, a poorly Princess of Wales and a poorly King both of whom are in treatment for cancer.

I can’t actually believe that this thread is being allowed and is not being deleted. Although maybe because it’s targeting the Prince of Wales, it’s not seen as goady. Like all the threads spreading conspiracy theories about the Princess of Wales were allowed to stay.

The Tatler article as originally written said quite a few things disparaging not just of Kate, but of the Middleton family also. Anna Pasternak said in the audio clip that William instructed lawyers to write to Tatler to advise them that aspects of the article were defamatory, and unless they were removed, the magazine risked being sued.

The Tatler team negotiated with the Prince’s lawyers and agreed various changes would be made. So far so normal as far as UK media law goes. However, Anna Pasternak was clearly pissed off. Several years later she recounts the story.

I don’t think her conclusion (you can’t write negative stories about the then Cambridges) is borne out by what happened in the press either before the Sussexes were on the scene, subsequently, or even from this episode. If she wrote something potentially defamatory, it’s potentially defamatory. That puts you at risk at being asked to take it down. That’s the case no matter whom you write it about. Plus, in this case, some of the complained about content was about the Middletons, not “just” Kate.

(I also didn’t warm to her account after she complained that she had referred to Kate as being “perilously thin” as a compliment, and it was ridiculous that that had caused offence. She specifically referred it back to author Tom Woolf’s references to society ladies being thin. I have read Tom Woolf, and specifically the Bonfire of the Vanities in which he divides wealthy women into two types: Social X-rays (starved to “near perfection” with “juiceless ribs and atrophied backsides”) and Lemon Tarts, who are blonde and flaunt the advantages of youth. It’s flat out misogynistic, and if Anna Pasternak thinks her reference to that, and her distillation of it into perilously thin being complimentary, to be frank I'm not surprised that she’s not a great judge of what is and isn’t defamatory…)

(Edited because a PP was correct and the description was perilously, not painfully thin)

GreenClock · 24/04/2024 15:44

”no British print media is allowed to say anything negative about Kate or William. “

I am anti-royal but tbh I don’t believe this statement.

I’ve read a fair few negative comments about Kate setting her sights on William/awaiting a proposal whilst he dated other women, for example, along with remarks about her weight, her laziness, her mother. And I’m not someone who seeks out news about the royals to any great extent, yet I’ve seen this stuff. So I don’t believe that mainstream media is “not allowed” to criticise them.
