I am pleased to let you know that Prince William is on good form, visiting my home town today, meeting our football team and pulling a pint in the local. He clearly prioritised his engagements this week and this was far too important to miss⚽️🤣

Why can't Camilla take time off, her husband has cancer fgs .

I agree in general there is a problem and I'm largely supportive of the RF. It's almost too slimmed down now. Princess Royal is fantastic but she can't go on forever 🤷

Forcing people into that through accident of birth is dreadful. Imagine if the next in line had learning difficulties, or social anxiety, or any number of health issues that made them a poor fit for the role

You don't have to imagine it. Examples: George III and George VI both had health issues - MH LD and speech impediment. When you're next in line to the throne, that's your destiny not whether or not you're fit for the role.

Yes indeed. You only have to look at the Bowes Lyons sisters ...nieces of the Queen Mother. Quite a story, very sad. Not acknowledged by the RF and one was even listed as dead in Burke's Peerage but actually only died in 2014.

I didn’t say she shouldn’t. I was saying that given she has quite a few holidays, the timing of the announcement is odd, especially when P of W and KC are incapacitated.

It's totally reasonable that she is taking a week off, I am surprised they felt the need to announce it though rather than her just quietly doing it.

William and Kate are often off for a week or more without any specific announcement

Well, as I am sure someone will be along to explain very shortly, he does a lot of work behind the scenes which no one can articulate and also they have no live in staff (all the staff that live on the estate don't count) so he has, on top of this exhausting engagement, also got to juggle cooking tea and cleaning the loo

Not having live-in staff doesn't mean that they don't have any. I'm sure they'll have someone to clean and cook

I've always felt very sorry for poor Henry VI, anyone less suited to being a medieval monarch couldn't be imagined really, those being the days when you actually had to do some serious reigning and fighting to be effective.

The more I think about it, the more I think supporting royalty is actively cruel. I mean, it takes a pretty specific personality type to enjoy the shaking hands and cutting ribbons nonsense, let alone be good at it. Forcing people into that through accident of birth is dreadful. Imagine if the next in line had learning difficulties, or social anxiety, or any number of health issues that made them a poor fit for the role. Indeed, given PW's well documented mental health issues (and I applaud him for being open about it[, forcing him to stay in the role or risk a massive constitutional crisis is terrible on the human level.

I have a ten-yr-old a couple of months younger than George. He likes Minecraft and kicking about in the park with his friends. He wants to be a geologist or a Youtuber. The very thought of forcing him into the public gaze with no choice for the rest of his life makes me sick. Royalists need to take a long hard look in the mirror IMO.

WinnieTheW0rm · 03/03/2024 10:28

the journalists within the Royal Rota system eg those who get to be briefed directly by the palace

That's not what the Royal Rota means

It refers to the pool system, whereby those establishments on the Rota take in in turns to cover royal engagements which take place in venues that are too small for a full press pack, or which might otherwise receive no coverage. It's usually one camera operative, one stills photographer and one print journalist.

There's a lot on social media that misrepresents it as an "inner circle" (often US posters)

We'd have a lot more cash to donate to children in Gaza if we weren't propping up a ridiculous antiquated system to the tune of hundreds of millions every year.

Come back to the discussion when you’ve acquainted yourself with the facts.

Badnewsonthedoorstep · 03/03/2024 11:29

Sorry Gottseidank but I think it’s seriously distasteful to bring the children of Gaza in to this completely unrelated discussion in the first place.

HumanBurrito · 03/03/2024 11:31

Gottseidank manages to bring both condescension and irrelevance to the thread. A winning combo.

It's a good job that it wasn't @Gottseidank , that introduced it then , isn't it!

Can you point to the post where it was introduced please?

I was responding to Gottseidank’s post at 10.21 today:

Edited to say In general: can we leave the children of Gaza out of a discussion about the RF please?

jeffgoldblum · 03/03/2024 11:52

@Badnewsonthedoorstep , agreed! , not a suitable aside on these threads at all!

Bigtrip2026 · 03/03/2024 16:39

Wonder if all the people on here moaning about the wealth and privilege of the rf would shun cleaner's, nannies, better house, better car, more holidays just so they can say they're just like the less fortunate?

PS I'm pretty broke so it's not like I'm one of the more fortunate.

Gottseidank · 03/03/2024 12:06

The thread is about Prince William? He has been outspoken about Gaza recently.

https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2024/feb/21/prince-william-call-end-fighting-gaza-raises-question-foreign-office-input

I’d say it’s more relevant than many of the other diversions.

Phew! I bet the effort of that must have exhausted him and he went off for a lie down to recover from the exertion.

Now, now - there’s no need to project your own deficiencies onto others.

William’s statesman-like impact and genuine commitment to various causes are recognised worldwide. What a fabulous ambassador he is for the U.K.

I understand that you are committed to condemning him, but the really is that he makes en extremely good impression on most people at home and abroad.

Please do not say I am committed to condemning him.
I condemn his work record, yes, I think he could do much much more.

The article is from the telegraph which will obviously big him up
