Hello 👋, I thought it might be nice to have a thread we can discuss our cheesy feelings, food delights and general discourse about the royal family.

@wordler Every single head of state around the world is lorded as a king. Look at the US. There are supposed to be 3 equal branches on government, but only one, the President, gets to occupy a quasi palace, where people stand as you pass by and treat you with deference, where you have what may as well be courtiers and servants. And they love their political dynasties. How many presidents and presidential candidates are deemed fit to rule because of who they are, not what they have done?

jeffgoldblum · 18/02/2024 17:29

They have literally moaned me into monarchy!! 🧀🤣

Exactly - so I’d rather have the ones that pretend to have humility about it and are trained to do the role, and are tied into our general history. Than potentially a British Trump! I can see bojo eyeing up that kinda role! No thanks!

As long as they are called Dave 😂

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 18/02/2024 17:31

@jeffgoldblum I'm the same. I couldn't have told you the names of the Wales children before Spare was published. That whinge fest and the utter rubbish spouted by the sugary folk has made me appreciate the RF in ways I never thought I would.

Does that make us moanrchists rather than royalists ? 😂

Turtlerussell · 18/02/2024 17:32

This is making me laugh - I thought i the only quasi royalist on here 😂

Turtlerussell · 18/02/2024 17:20

I don’t really want a republic, I’m not a staunch royalist either. What do I call myself? 😂

I sort of go with ‘constitutional monarchy lite’

jeffgoldblum · 18/02/2024 17:39

Now your talking @RoyallyRhubarb ! 🤣

wordler · 18/02/2024 17:42

‘Lite’ because I like the current set up for the stewardship of the Crown assets like the estates, art, jewels archives etc

I like the current main incumbents way of dealing with the big events and the fairly dedicated job they do to engage with all the less glamorous jobs and charity work.

I enjoy the pomp and the historical ‘feels’.

But ‘lite’ because if we were facing an heir who was less than dedicated and was a dodgy as Andrew or Harry then I’d be marching for the good old republic as fast as I could get there.

Turtlerussell · 18/02/2024 17:50

I like how you’ve articulated that, I’ve not thought about it in that way. But it’s made me realise maybe I feel more accepting of the monarchy atm, it’s because I like Charles and Camilla - I always thought they got a rough deal with the press and it was one sided and unfair. Maybe if it was grasping petulant Harry at the helm I’d be running towards a republic too.

https://amp.theguardian.com/uk/2005/apr/03/monarchy.lynnbarber quite enjoyed this article about Camilla, I think she’s had it really quite tough abs with not much recognition - prob because she doesn’t head up an online ‘squad’.

I'm with the bride | Monarchy | The Guardian

Why has Camilla been so demonised for so long? Because she is neither young nor pretty enough to be tabloid fodder and royal protocol has hampered her at every turn.

I think one of the main issues the republicans face is their option doesn’t offer much in the way of good cheer
Ah now I can't agree with that Grin

But he feels like the exception rather than the norm!

JaneJeffer · 18/02/2024 18:48

The thing is to keep your president and your PM as two separate offices @wordler!

William would make a good UK president Grin

wordler · 18/02/2024 19:11

It’s a difficult role to fill well if you want to have an effective head of state for both the domestic and foreign duties.

 • Have conducted themselves across their whole life to date as fairly politically neutral so that they can be a welcome head of state to all the UK regardless of political affiliation.
 • Ethically sound reputation so that they aren’t seen to be using the big events or emergencies on the job for their cronies’ benefit - like Boris with Covid
 • Sympathetic and interested in the UK people to be able to show up for communities when disasters happen
 • Strong diplomacy skills to network for the UK on the world stage
 • Charismatic enough to be an appealing prospect for visiting heads of state to feel respected and more amenable to what the UK government is negotiating for
 • Able to raise the spirits/support for the big fun national events like the Olympics and also be dignified and solemn to lead through the somber ones line Remembrance Day

I guess the roles such as Head of the Church and Head of the Armed Forces might have to be split off into separate roles for an elected head of state.

And also a new organization created to be the steward and protector of the Crown estates and historical assets.

Nailing a buffalo mozarella to the wall is what it feels like. Can't decide if it's bad faith or just ignorance.
