Hello 👋, I thought it might be nice to have a thread we can discuss our cheesy feelings, food delights and general discourse about the royal family.

I’m here. Well, somewhat. Not feeling well. But excited for the discussion.

Re: American cheese, we only ever buy it in slices and mainly for hamburgers because it’s melty. But we get a nice kind that isn’t rubbery looking or tasting. I’ll look in the store next time I go.

I’ve been fortunate enough to live in a few countries and the delights of finding new cheese moier …. Wonderful.

The one I remember vividly was a softish cheese in Cori. we were invited to eat with my landlady’s relatives. Very rustic and one of the more memorable evenings of my life - the food was exquisite. But oh that cheese….

Also one just over the border of France. Tiny stop at a small cafe. Again soft cheese. Divine.

I wonder if the RF find the same joy in discovering new things when they go out and about?

I do get the longing for ‘home’ food though.

Mine was butteries. (Aka rowie up here or roll). I prefer the more crispy ones but when you are overseas you’ll take what you can get posted to you/taken back by a fellow scottish colleague.

Also lovely with cheese…

And I’m nigh on positive they’ll hae them doon the road at Balmoral…

rowie

I'm following hoing to see a list of the royals' favourite cheeses.

Mine is Conte, and really strong cheddar, and goats cheese, and wensleydale with cranberries, and well basically all cheese.

Greek salad with feta is a thing of beauty

Likewise feta and watermelon.

The dog goes nuts for that.

ArcaneWireless · 12/02/2024 13:35

They are clearly partial mrsleon 😊

A few people have mentioned Red Leicester. It’s interesting that the plastic stuff you get in the supermarket is nothing like the traditional recipe. There is a farm not too far from where I live that produces the traditional way and it tastes sort of sharp and nutty. It’s delicious. It’s still orange but this was apparently an added colour to differentiate it from cheddar. Also, it kind of has a royal connection because the farm is close to the site of the Battle of Bosworth where Richard iii was defeated and Henry vii started the Tudor dynasty 👑😆

My great granny used to bemoan the disappearance of cheese mrsdanvers

It was kept in the back press (larder cupboard) in waxy paper. It was a long time before she got a fridge but she never kept cheese in it.

Not that it lasted long anyway!

Do you add mint to the watermelon salad?

ArcaneWireless · 12/02/2024 13:46

Yes - but the dog doesn’t get the mint. Just the feta (not too much) and watermelon.

In summer I make the dog watermelon and coconut ices.

I eat them too….

When I was little, my mum used to buy cheese in Woolworths in thetown near where we lived. They used to let me have a slice of cheddar to eat from the cheese counter. I’d completely forgotten about that!

They still give a slice at most deli counters here. Sometimes offered, always if you ask.

Hoe do you make cauliflower cheese? Isn’t that melty?

ArcaneWireless · 12/02/2024 13:56

We had a shop called Wm Low.

They often gave free cheese or meat. Not slices though - just wee cubes. You were blessed smilesy!

wordler · 12/02/2024 13:56

Happy to Brie here too.

Thunderbird7 · 12/02/2024 13:56

I am a heathen who doesn’t like cheese

ArcaneWireless · 12/02/2024 13:58

It matters not Thunderbird 😊

ajandjjmum · 12/02/2024 14:00

Feta, watermelon, watercress and a little balsamic vinegar. Perfect!

RocketsMagnificent7 · 12/02/2024 14:02

I don't know if I'm allowed to reside here, I'm not a fan of blue cheese ☹️

All other varieties Brie it on

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 12/02/2024 14:16

Late aunt lived in the Auvergne and we used to love aligot made with Cantal - real ribsticking keep the winter cold out stuff.

A cheese sauce - white sauce (roux plus milk) then grated cheddar!

That’s what I would also do for the burgers @ArcaneWireless easy on the flour. Just enough roux to bind it.

I think Jeff said all are welcome but I Camembert for sure.

Ladies, is there an in joke here that I am not privvy to 😀 I do love cheese also, Wensleydale melted on toast is delish. I am ambivalent about the Royal Family, but do find myself sometimes having a nosey on the Royal Family thread.

Honestly, I don’t know myself. Someone started posting about cheese and it just took off. I don’t think we can run out of things to say about cheese! And it’s not a contentious topic.

I was very young. Perhaps a bit cuter then too 😂. I know delis still give out samples of meat and cheese, it was more that it was in Woolies that struck me. I know Woolworths has gone completely now ( in the UK) but I can’t remember when they last had cheese counters in amongst all the other tat stuff they used to sell
