No sausage so I grated some very naice Parmesan over my scrambled eggs and crumbled some crispy bacon over with a good seasoning of black pepper and feel much better!

jeffgoldblum · 18/02/2024 16:44

@wordler , I hope you know I wasn't referring to cheesers!

That’s exactly what I was thinking although I don’t want to be flippant about @jeffgoldblum ’s injury 😆

So I can’t be arsed to start a thread about this and have it derailed by the usual suspects but thinking about the constitutional monarchy vs republic argument - I think one of the main issues the republicans face is their option doesn’t offer much in the way of good cheer and what we get with the ‘happy’ side of the way the current royal family are run.

It’s like the advice when you are trying to change a bad habit or persuade someone to buy something from you, people gravitate towards the positive rather than the negative.

So not - ‘eating bacon will give you heart disease’ but ‘cut down on the processed meat and enjoy being able to run around with your grandchildren for years to come’

What’s the ‘happy’ image offered by a republic and elected head of state?

I agree with this. The pomp around the RF is a bit silly when you actually analyse it, but it is carried off with such conviction that it becomes spectacular and often moving. Republicans remind me of why we as a nation got bored with Cromwell. Been there. Done that. I have to say that’s what I find irksome about the Sussexes too. Their constant negativity and worthiness

Well looking at the current government, it would prob be something in line with their austerity type policies. Yuck.

wildernesssw · 18/02/2024 17:14

Yes, some people are very vocal about what they DON'T want, but not so clear about what they are proposing instead - probably because it would become clear that their 'solution' wouldn't fix the problems they claim are the result of having a monarchy...

Turtlerussell · 18/02/2024 17:16

The thing is, tech bro billionaire rishi rich looks even more out of touch than the king tbh. As crazy as that sounds. So if we just had him, and no Christmas speech covertly highlighting food banks, rising poverty etc - who else would be bringing it up? No one in the current government I don’t think.

Turtlerussell · 18/02/2024 17:18

Has anyone seen King Charles III play by Mike Bartlett?

wildernesssw · 18/02/2024 17:19

I think Rishi is a perfect example of wealth and connections getting you places (and into positions of power and influence) - getting rid of the RF is not going to make the issue magically disappear.

Turtlerussell · 18/02/2024 17:20

I don’t really want a republic, I’m not a staunch royalist either. What do I call myself? 😂

If anything at least you can keep track of it with the royals. Nepotism is easier to hide amongst the untitled elites

Ah now I can't agree with that Grin

Turtlerussell · 18/02/2024 17:27

I do prefer the idea of a king than a president. It wouldn’t cost less, I think someone has explained previously how it would cost the same.

And France isn’t super egalitarian and lovely, I have family that live there. It’s more overtly racist in lots of ways in my personal experience.

jeffgoldblum · 18/02/2024 17:27

I'm a contrary fucker!!!
Wasn't fussed about the royals , however the more republicans go on and on and ooonnnn!
The more I feel the need to don my best breeches , wave a flag and roar " god Dave the king " 🤴
