Meghan, Duchess of Sussex spotted out and about, part 3

Part 3 of a nice, unproblematic thread to discuss some of the fab outfits from the Duchess of Sussex, and some of the many great causes she (and Harry) and Archewell supports. h/t @queentim for the original threads.

I really liked this outfit and the way the skirt flowed as she walked - really good choice and quite pared back compared to some other people on the red carpet.

Yes you did misquote. I'm not going to say it all again what I said and what you said but you did. Perhaps you need to reread the posts again. It's all far too boring for others though so as I said report me for saying the venue was once the biggest building in Jamaica or not. Just move on.

Edited

And again, never said you said that. Perhaps you need a reread, but again it is al there.

Ah, and I thought the endless dedicated Endgame threads would have been enough. Quite sad really

Sadly, Taller sally and Rousette started this one out on page one, making it something other than a discussion about how fabulous Meghan looks. I was hoping for some common ground here, but that’s not what the people want, clearly.

Thoroughly enjoyable article in the Guardian perfectly capturing the zeitgeist of the British media's (and that of some on here) hysterical and utterly unhinged response to Harry and Meghan's Jamaica trip.

Couple of choice extracts:

"This week, look at Prince Harry and Meghan being feted in Jamaica. See the soft-power skills they carry with them, and think about that Nigerian adage.
In much of the British media, Harry and Meghan are all-year panto villains. But around the world, they could not be more loved – often for the very reasons they are despised in the British media. They are the soft power we could have enjoyed with the increasingly dominant, increasingly self-confident non-white world, especially the Commonwealth.

Still, Harry has something the royals he left behind and the likes of Chillax Cameron can never have. He has familiarity, an ease with difference – and he has Meghan.
In 2012, he also had the love of the UK press and public. He was praised for his warm embrace of the then Jamaican PM, Portia Simpson-Miller, and was photographed larking about with Usain Bolt. “He has shown himself to be a natural ambassador, a diplomat in a very real sense – one hug from him has (at least partly) dissipated the bad feeling of generations … It is inconceivable that any other royal could have pulled this off quite so effectively,” gushed the Mail on Sunday.

Now, much of the press sees Harry and Meghan glad-handing and being glad-handed in Jamaica, surfing the love at the premiere of the Bob Marley biopic, and they don’t much like it. “Meghan and Harry pose next to anti-royal Jamaican prime minister who wants to ditch the monarchy and warned Wills and Kate they’ll never be king and queen of his nation – as Charles undergoes prostate surgery and the Princess of Wales recovers in hospital,” thundered the Mail. “The hubris of Harry and Meghan’s Jamaican photoshoot,” snorted the Spectator. “Crown fools: ‘Provocative’ Harry & Meghan spark royal row as they meet Jamaican politicians plotting to oust Charles as head of state,” jeered the Sun.

Britain understood Harry’s value and soft power in 2012, so what changed? Answer: Harry fell in love with, and married, a Black woman. That could have been a boon for this country, here and abroad; instead it’s a might-have-been. And what might have been to our reputational benefit is what has been happening in Jamaica.
The UK headlines and sour grapes tell you one thing: we messed up and we know it. Meghan was, and remains, soft-power dynamite, and all we have now is the soft-power kryptonite of Wills and Kate and the Windsor “firm” that spurned her. Still, that’s us: we never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/jan/26/harry-meghan-jamaica-soft-power-william-kate-britain

This is madness. The woman outright lies about a bunch of crap on Oprah and laughed at the £30million+ we spent on their wedding saying it was t even the proper wedding and they had a far nicer small wedding in their garden (another lie as exposed by the Archbishop of Canterbury!)

I mean ffs! Why would anyone like someone who throws their hard earned money back in their face?!

the vast majority liked her and was happy for him before she started openly lying.

what a load of old crap. The entire uk are racist but we’re just too stupid to realise? No. She just lies openly! It literally there on screen.

now the press like to wind shit up and should wind their necks in I agree but the rest of us just don’t like them because they OPENLY lie. Or are we just going to pretend that never happened?

and can I point out that Harry supposedly was terrified the same thing that happened to his mum (press witch hunt etc) would happen to his wife - well his mum was fucking white blonde aristocracy! Nothing to do with race!

If talk of grubby floors offend you’d not be comfortable at most movie theaters in america where all the floors are grubby and our mothers told us so repeatedly before we went to them. I think it’s a bit “white savior” to keep making the implications you are making.

Sure

I'd like to see posts about 'grubby floors' at a Hollywood film premiere
Won't happen so stop trying to blame me for that rude comment. I didn't say it

mrsmingleton · 26/01/2024 20:23

mrsmingleton · 26/01/2024 19:53

If you have an issue report it but please do get the words right.

What I actually said : it was at one time the largest building in the country NOT that it is the largest movie theatre venue in the country.

It was also the first building to have air conditioning in Jamaica.

This above @thepressoutside. This is one example. I'm not drawing this out any longer ( as I already said - it's boring for others and report if you think there is an issue ) as it is there for reading and your endless badgering is boring now. I have not said Jamaica was not worthy of having this premiere. I did say it is a venue unlike Grauman's or other typical premiere venues. I did say that Meghan's outfit style is imo not entirely suitable for the venue. There is nothing wrong in saying any of those things. That's it, my love.

thepressoutside · 26/01/2024 20:23

Other than what Meghan wore, this might be my favourite of the night (though allegedly they are too glam for this Jamaican venue)

AliceOlive · 26/01/2024 20:25

Because the floors aren’t grubby at Hollywood’s premieres in venues that have them constantly. But they are everywhere else in America. Are you really comparing a normal place anywhere in the world with Hollywood and expecting them to be the same? It’s ridiculous and no one holds Hollywood up as a standard. They dress differently there. They are all fucking loaded. Normal places have different dress codes.

obviously.

Roussette · 26/01/2024 20:26

I did say that Meghan's outfit style is imo not entirely suitable for the venue

We know. You keep saying that

However others, including many who dressed up also, I am sure think different.

I think she looked great. Understated and elegant without being over the top.

You can keep going on about a post that was not part of the discussion as a way to try and obfuscate posters mrsmingleton, but the discussion was around what you said, and I'll quote it again.

"I am saying it is not your typical Hollywood or London premiere location. "

You can reflect on it. If you don't want to continue the conversation with me, then don't quote me. Your continuous quoting of me and then getting a response, is in fact NOT badgering, so please don't try and victimize yourself here. If you feel I am badgering then feel free to report. However, don't quote me in a continuous conversation, then not expect a response. That's not in the spirit of Mumsnet. Thanks.

Honestly I'm obsessed with it. I think she takes the crown for the night with me. And she's insanely stunning!

I’m not sure they are separate. Someone posted a photo of the back and it looks like the same material to me and possibly even attached.

I like the all black look. Love the casual appearance of the top against the glamorous look of the skirt. It’s simple and elegant but all kind of funky at the same time. The earrings are perfect.

The skirt is the star.

I also wondered about her choice to have her hair styled this way. My hair frizzes in even slight humidity so I’d love to wear it like that, but don’t know if I could ever pull that off but I love it on Meghan and think she looks great.

Ah right. I do like her earrings but I think the rest of her outfit looks pretty ordinary. Maybe because this is quite a common style, wearing anything else with the skirt just detracts from it.

Ignore the silly article focus on the dress it's fabulous. I think she looks great in red/burgundy. Also green

Look at the video of them being shown to their seats (seats which Harry clearly wasn't happy with). They are literally seated in front of a guy in a baseball cap and a woman who appears to be wearing a shell suit is a few seats down. Meghan was overdressed. She looked good though but had to have been uncomfortable in her seat with the full skirt and also with it brushing along the slightly grubby floor

Edited

Ah here is the grubby floor person!

AliceOlive · 26/01/2024 20:34

@crossculturalwedding24234 yes, this is what I think:

Maybe because this is quite a common style, wearing anything else with the skirt just detracts from it.

I think the top is attached, too.

Are you sure, I can see a bit on the side closest to Harry peeking out like it's been tucked in.
Wandering off to see if I can find a pic from another angle

AliceOlive · 26/01/2024 20:41

Ignore the article - I didn’t read that. Just found it looking for dress photos.

Oooh that does look attached but I don't understand how the skirt looks like it covers the bottom part of the top in the front? Did they cut the top diagonally to match

"Part 3 of a nice, unproblematic thread"

As soon as I saw that in the title of a thread about Meghan I thought yeah right 😂

And in true miserable Mumsnet housewife fashion, the comments don't disappoint 😂

Speak for yourself! I've no time for H&M, or their snide antics ... but I'm certainly not a housewife ... I'm a very well educated professional thanks who can see through their BS, if anything maybe 'supporters' are a bit light so can't see what's under that tatty veil

skullbabe · 26/01/2024 20:45

I am saying it is not your typical Hollywood or London premiere location

Because it’s a movie about Bob Marley and his formative years in Kingston. It was important to Ziggy Marley to champion the place where Bob was as actually from as the first place the movie would be screened.

What a stunning piece - is that Irish crochet? It’s absolutely gorgeous - wow! What a statement piece!

I’m thinking skirt and top made separately but then sewn together with a belting type bit sewn over the top at the waist? No idea.

Anyone who has been to the Caribbean knows that there are loads of unsavoury parts especially in Jamaica.

Wow
