Part 3 of a nice, unproblematic thread to discuss some of the fab outfits from the Duchess of Sussex, and some of the many great causes she (and Harry) and Archewell supports. h/t @queentim for the original threads.

I really liked this outfit and the way the skirt flowed as she walked - really good choice and quite pared back compared to some other people on the red carpet.

I am saying it is not your typical Hollywood or London premiere location

Because it’s a movie about Bob Marley and his formative years in Kingston. It was important to Ziggy Marley to champion the place where Bob was as actually from as the first place the movie would be screened.

Yup I know that and said that.

skullbabe · 26/01/2024 20:51

BUT NOT A TYPICAL HOLLYWOOD PREMIERE VENUE.

Its not mandatory for premieres to be in Hollywood - Slumdog Millionaire for example.

Exactly. And the style would be Kingston and not Hollywood.

I think that’s always hard to do for someone who lives elsewhere.

But I think Meghan did a great job of being glamorous, respectful, matching the degree of style of people she’d be interacting with and she looked beautiful.

do you have a link for the earrings please? ive been looking for dupes too.

Yup I know and said I saw why they had it there. I didn't say it was mandatory.

Carib 5 - not posh and you would not get dressed up as if you were in Hollywood.

So - Jamaica’s biggest and oldest cinema venue is not posh and no effort should be made because it’s not Hollywood. People should have told the Jamaicans that they’re - let me check my notes - not as posh as Hollywood and not have bothered to get all dressed up.

OP posts:
skullbabe · 26/01/2024 20:59

It's about suitability.

Why is it not suitable for people
to get dressed up for a premiere in a country’s best venue?

A venue in Jamaica would never be glam such as the likes of London or Hollywood. I'm sure Jamaica are very proud of Bob and their venue too, and good for them

thepressoutside · 26/01/2024 20:23

Other than what Meghan wore, this might be my favourite of the night (though allegedly they are too glam for this Jamaican venue)

Wow that is a great look!

I think it comes down to WHY they flew thousands of miles to watch a film. Were they promoting the film, or there to promote themselves?

Either way, it seems a bit of a mix up with clothes, seating, and environmental impact

they were invited by the guy who own the production company, who appaz has been friends with meg for a long time

Mylovelygreendress · 26/01/2024 21:11

I read it was a relative 🤷‍♀️

Wtf

i think she was trying to dress down the skirt with a simple top, i actually liked it.

And I've got a big organza skirt i've been trying to style for ages, so might give it a go.

I'm not a fan of Meg's behaviour ( I think they should drop the titles for a start) but I thought it was pretty obvious they weren't there on official business. And like anybody else who was a friend but not main cast/producer/whatever seated appropriately. Why all the fuss about their seating arrangements I don't know!

Ditto. I feel very uncomfortable comparisons with high end premieres in Hollywood compared to Jamaica with 'grubby floors'. WTAF am I reading, and sensing here

Someone going on about dressing down for the caribbean style or whatever rubbish.

its very off

skullbabe · 26/01/2024 21:21

We should tell the Jamaicans that dressing up isn’t really a thing for them according to many on this thread.

Different cultures have different dress codes. That doesn't make one 'better' than the other. It is no insult to Jamaica to say that there is a different dress code to Hollywood.

what dress code does "jamaica" supposedly have. because outside of resorts of warped media impressions it is conservative country with large scale traditional christian views.

you cannot wear flip flops, small shorts or spaghetti straps in banks or gov't buildings.

kingston is not montego bay.

How I wish that were true where I live! The unions ensure you can wear whatever you like to work in our state government buildings. Including pajama pants.

Thank you for articulating the “dress code” thing much better than I could. You’re absolutely right - it feels like people haven’t met actual Caribbean people outside of the beach and resorts.

Funny story - I took 18 year old me to meet my boyfriend’s mother wearing a micro dress in the suburbs of St George in Grenada. The moment I walked into her house (I’m not of Caribbean descent but very much a Black Brit) and clocked the crosses on the wall, the spotless house with the doilies on the tables and she came out in her suit after coming from work - woo boy! 🤣She was unfailingly polite but I knew that next time (if there ever was going to be a next time) I would
have to “come correct”. Lucky for me there was a next time - and I wore a yellow ankle skimming sundress which she complimented and I never made that mistake again when I visited anyone’s house formally. She died recently but was a formidable woman whom I kept in touch with through the years.

Just the one look will put the fear of God into you won't it 😂

AliceOlive · 26/01/2024 21:53

I don’t think that would have happened in Hollywood. Underscoring the point that styles of dress are different in different places

Yep - it’s more than 30 years later and I’m still shuddering remembering it 🤣.

I'm not a fan of Meghan but I thought she looked bloody lovely. There didn't seem to be a dress code at all
