Meghan, Duchess of Sussex spotted out and about, part 3

Part 3 of a nice, unproblematic thread to discuss some of the fab outfits from the Duchess of Sussex, and some of the many great causes she (and Harry) and Archewell supports. h/t @queentim for the original threads.

I really liked this outfit and the way the skirt flowed as she walked - really good choice and quite pared back compared to some other people on the red carpet.

Thx for thread @skullbabe

I liked the outfit. Understated and I think we all agree she has great decollatage and shoulders.
(I won't tell you what spell checker offered for decollatage!)
I'm not a fan of strapless so I liked the fine straps, and the skirt was fab and the sort of thing I would have loved to have worn. Too old and not thin anymore!

skullbabe · 26/01/2024 11:35

I've popped dupes of the earrings and her bag on my Christmas wishlist 😂- really like them. Can't wear thin straps out in public myself either - too fat and too booby with my 34J's 😂!

Thoroughly enjoyable article in the Guardian perfectly capturing the zeitgeist of the British media's (and that of some on here) hysterical and utterly unhinged response to Harry and Meghan's Jamaica trip.

Couple of choice extracts:

"This week, look at Prince Harry and Meghan being feted in Jamaica. See the soft-power skills they carry with them, and think about that Nigerian adage.
In much of the British media, Harry and Meghan are all-year panto villains. But around the world, they could not be more loved – often for the very reasons they are despised in the British media. They are the soft power we could have enjoyed with the increasingly dominant, increasingly self-confident non-white world, especially the Commonwealth.

Still, Harry has something the royals he left behind and the likes of Chillax Cameron can never have. He has familiarity, an ease with difference – and he has Meghan.
In 2012, he also had the love of the UK press and public. He was praised for his warm embrace of the then Jamaican PM, Portia Simpson-Miller, and was photographed larking about with Usain Bolt. “He has shown himself to be a natural ambassador, a diplomat in a very real sense – one hug from him has (at least partly) dissipated the bad feeling of generations … It is inconceivable that any other royal could have pulled this off quite so effectively,” gushed the Mail on Sunday.

Now, much of the press sees Harry and Meghan glad-handing and being glad-handed in Jamaica, surfing the love at the premiere of the Bob Marley biopic, and they don’t much like it. “Meghan and Harry pose next to anti-royal Jamaican prime minister who wants to ditch the monarchy and warned Wills and Kate they’ll never be king and queen of his nation – as Charles undergoes prostate surgery and the Princess of Wales recovers in hospital,” thundered the Mail. “The hubris of Harry and Meghan’s Jamaican photoshoot,” snorted the Spectator. “Crown fools: ‘Provocative’ Harry & Meghan spark royal row as they meet Jamaican politicians plotting to oust Charles as head of state,” jeered the Sun.

Britain understood Harry’s value and soft power in 2012, so what changed? Answer: Harry fell in love with, and married, a Black woman. That could have been a boon for this country, here and abroad; instead it’s a might-have-been. And what might have been to our reputational benefit is what has been happening in Jamaica.
The UK headlines and sour grapes tell you one thing: we messed up and we know it. Meghan was, and remains, soft-power dynamite, and all we have now is the soft-power kryptonite of Wills and Kate and the Windsor “firm” that spurned her. Still, that’s us: we never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

Harry and Meghan in Jamaica are soft-power dynamite. Britain is left with kryptonite William and Kate | Nelson Abbey

At times like these, it’s clear that the Sussexes represent a missed opportunity for a UK that needs friends in the world, says writer and broadcaster Nels Abbey

I looked up some of the comments from Jamaican media on YouTube .
They love Harry and Meghan .
It really is a shame that they are no longer working royals. They would have been an asset to the country

thepressoutside · 26/01/2024 13:38

Thank you @skullbabe!

Roussette · 26/01/2024 13:38

Thanks for that article @TallerSally and although I linked it on the previous thread, I feel it's worth repeating what the Jamaican press are saying. They sound flummoxed with what our media is saying. I don't blame them

Totally agree. Its a big loss for us

FrownedUpon · 26/01/2024 13:43

She looks massively over dressed for the event & her dress is too long. Everyone around them in the cinema was casually dressed.

AliceOlive · 26/01/2024 13:44

I came to this to read about Meghan’s fashion. I’ve enjoyed the other threads on the topic.

Already it’s turned to a topic which will become unpleasant. I don’t think that’s what was intended by the OP.

Knowing that the grasping grifters are abroad is absolutely no loss for anyone with any sense.
But then I’m a republican not a doff cap grovelling monarchist.

Really love this look and especially the simplicity of it all?

I can’t wear thing straps like that anymore either. Maybe if I’d work out but I think with a little jacket over top it would be a great outfit that would work for more of us?

I have a more causal version of a flowy skirt like that.

where did you find the earrings?

I’m tired of worrying if I’m over dressed. It’s very difficult not to be pretty much everywhere these days.

My neighbor was lamenting that getting dressed to go out for a nice dinner is not the same. When you have people looking sloppy all around you it takes some of the fun out of it.

justasking111 · 26/01/2024 13:56

I've dressed up for the theatre, opera, others turn up in jeans. No Biggie

@AliceOlive I agree with you. Even when I go to an expensive restaurant in London, I feel people aren't really making the effort to dress up so much anymore. It's nice to put on some glad rags and high heels. I'm originally from Glasgow and women still dress up to the nines when on nights out, which is nice.

Ummm no they weren't, in fact lots were more dressed up than Meghan!

Why do people make this stuff up?!

And @GreekDogRescue I'm not a cap doffing monarchist lol, that made me laugh out loud, but whilst we're stuck with a Monarchy (which we are) I think H&M could've made a difference to the archaic Institution we have. Hey ho, wasn't meant to be

thepressoutside · 26/01/2024 14:12

I'd rather be "overdressed" these days. After COVID lockdowns I'm really tired of it, plus it's fun to dress up and do a bit of glam when you can

So looking forward for this neutral trend to end and more colour to come back. I think this is the year for that!

skullbabe · 26/01/2024 13:58

Thanks these are gorge!

I don't know how you could wait for Christmas, maybe add them to your birthday or anniversary or 'treat yo self' list instead 😉

justanotherusername22 · 26/01/2024 14:21

@JSMill You got there before me, I was literally about to say it's a north/south thing!

@AliceOlive are you in south UK? I grew up in London then went to uni in Bristol, so we're totally casual.

When I then moved north years later I had a total culture shock!! I don't know why we're so sloppy in London, I once wore a dress out on a date and felt near humiliated!

JSMill · 26/01/2024 14:56

@justanotherusername22 I know it's really weird.

justasking111 · 26/01/2024 14:59

Is underdressed a thing now? Who's buying all the pretty clothes that shops are selling?

AliceOlive · 26/01/2024 15:41

I’m in small town US. People literally wear pajamas in the streets.

LWSnow · 26/01/2024 15:49

I think she looks fab in every photo, I wish we could see more of her mum as she always looks fab and she's nearer my age,
