Why does the interview with H&M cause more anger and upset than the interview with Prince Andrew?

To preface - Im not a fan of Harry. Meghan I can give or take i think she mostly a victim to a husband who perhaps didn’t paint a full picture of what royal life is like and with her being American that way an easy thing to do.

Yes the Harry and Meghan interview contained porkie pies (about ‘getting married properly’, meh so what) and pretty shocking claims about racism and was full of total misunderstandings of royal protocol - such as going to HR for mental health help and then being confused when they point out you aren’t an employer. But I do feel it was their truth as to what they believe happened. I believe their behaviour is absolutely entitled and grotesque (Harry moaning about daddy cutting him off, mate your a 40yo millionaire read the room) but their anger stems from feeling genuinely wronged by people they love.

The Prince Andrew interview - he told great big fat barefaced lies that a 5yo would make up (“Oh well that can’t be true because I Erm…don’t sweat?”). All to cover up the fact he had sex with trafficked teenagers. He lied about his dodgy friendships, about medical conditions, about meeting women whose silence he later paid for. It’s absolutely outrageous that this interview as barely ever spoken about, he’s a TERRIBLE liar and I like H&M it’s not his truth it’s just a great big stonking fat lie from a nasty little pervert with an enormous sense of entitlement who has been treated pretty well and protected by mummy

Why do people get angrier about the interview if a (admittedly a bit of a tone deaf and stonking rich) couple who were actually just a bit sick of being harassed by the press and having their baby’s looks critiqued, than they do about an actual sex offender lying in his?

What's the difference between lying and telling "your" truth?

Passingthethyme · 18/01/2024 17:49

You are very right OP, it's weird

What's the difference between lying and telling "your" truth?

I’ll give an hypothetical example.

Somebody tells me I’m quite good at my job for a girl (I work in life sciences this has happened).

I see that as sexist.
He sees it as a rather clumsy compliment and didn’t mean harm and certainly isn’t sexist.

Those are our truths.

Which truth is real? This has been said by men who aren’t overtly sexist and think they are being complimentary. It’s subjective - and stems from different value systems.

Two wrongs don't make a right. I disliked both interviews

In the end the damage that PA did was to his own reputation and he showed himself up for what he is.

JaneJeffer · 18/01/2024 17:51

Well if you have no proof why should I believe you and the same goes for him!

GrazingSheep · 18/01/2024 17:54

It’s because he is ‘a prince of the blood’. And Meghan isn’t ’of the blood’.

MrsBook · 18/01/2024 17:57

I think some of it is that Prince Andrew situation is more serious and horrible to think about. For a lot of people, it's not a fun topic to dwell on, especially because it's not something the average person can fix or make better.

Harry and Megan can be annoying and they seem to lack self awareness and make better topics for gossip or idle speculation. I'm not saying it's good to gossip about anyone but I think H and M make for a more light hearted conversation than Prince Andrew and that's why people are more vocal about them on places like Mumsnet.

I actually would guess it’s more to do with misogyny. I don’t think people care about that blood nonsense. Have you SEEN how very worried people are about the Princess of wales - a woman they don’t know - being in hospital?

It only does if you're brainwashed.

duckpancakes · 18/01/2024 17:58

Does it? I'm more angry about Prince Andrew

CurlewKate · 18/01/2024 18:03

What is it about mixed race Meghan that makes people so cross? Hmm. I wonder.....

Mylovelygreendress · 18/01/2024 18:03

How are you judging the amount of anger ?

Most people think Andrew is a despicable creep . Very few people have defended him therefore there’s not a lot to say .

H and M are very divisive. Some on here think they are wonderful, brave people who were forced to flee from the wicked RF while others think their behaviour has been pretty shoddy over the past few years .
Two such different views will obviously prompt a lot of debate.

JaneJeffer · 18/01/2024 18:07

mixed race Meghan
That's a bit racist

Wheresthefibre · 18/01/2024 18:07

I don’t understand what you are saying?

I don’t know any who believed the PA interview was anything but a car crash and it’s brought up anytime it’s relevant.

When people are discussing M&H, people talk about their interview. You could argue that Harry keeps bringing it up. Like only a few months ago saying he didn’t accuse some members of the RF or racism. He did. Meghan did. They received an award, in part, for challenging racism in the RF. so they keep it current.

People can disagree with and have opinions on both. But talking about both isn’t always going to be relevant.

is it?! It’s racist to accurately describe someone’s race? Meghan describes herself as mixed race.

She doesn't say hi I'm mixed race Meghan does she @KarenNotAKaren?

DuckDuckHen · 18/01/2024 18:10

Media has whipped up a frenzy around H&M and hasn’t nearly as much with Andrew.

KarenNotAKaren · 18/01/2024 18:11

JaneJeffer · 18/01/2024 18:09

….sorry what?
I didn’t say she introduces herself as ‘mixed race’. I said she describes herself as mixed race or ‘mixed’. Because - well because she does.

I am mixed race.

I wouldn’t like it if someone called me ‘mixed race my name’ I would consider it racist.

You saying it’s not doesn’t make it your truth. It’s wrong.

JaneJeffer · 18/01/2024 18:12

But why call her mixed race Meghan? Her name is Meghan!

KarenNotAKaren · 18/01/2024 18:13

Oh I see everyone is getting up in arms about semantics - the pp clearly meant “Meghan who is mixed race” she wasn’t trying to give her a new name 🙄

Edited

Also the man would be simply wrong.

It’s not his truth. It’s definitely sexist. He is simply wrong.

JaneJeffer · 18/01/2024 18:13

Well then what are you defending them for @KarenNotAKaren ?

Wheresthefibre · 18/01/2024 18:14

KarenNotAKaren · 18/01/2024 18:13

So someone tells you something is racist and you call it semantics.

Interesting

MaturingCheeseball · 18/01/2024 18:14

Exactly@Mylovelygreendress . There’s nothing to debate about Andrew. He’s a pompous creep. Parts of his interview were hilarious (sweating, Pizza Express) and that provided five minutes of humour but that was it. Not interested in seeing him again.

Meghan and Harry, however, have been providing material for years now. And their Oprah interview was gossipy spite (or “their truth”) so naturally people will want to gossip about their gossip.

It’s so bloody tiresome when posters try to make it about “sides” as if it’s an either/or like pop stars to whom you pledge eternal allegiance and must hate the other’s fans. It is juvenile considering that most posters I presume are grown-ups…
