I reckon Meghan didn't fancy competition with Lauren Sanchez receiving an award.

“I’d not heard of Schaumberg-Lippe before …”

and you never will again!!

Lockupyourbiscuits · 20/01/2024 11:49

That first bit of the speech about Travolta dining out on his dance with Diana sounded a bit off

Might have been the delivery as he’s no comedian- didn’t hear the rest of the speech

The medal looked like something won at a swimming gala in year 6 👍

AliceOlive · 20/01/2024 12:55

I think Travlota had just mentioned dancing with Diana.

Could it be any more predictable that Meghan stayed home?

cerisepanther73 · 20/01/2024 13:17

@Dustybear

L.o.l 🤣😆

wildernesssw · 20/01/2024 13:57

It was as if Travolta was only famous because he danced with Diana... as opposed to two very famous people dancing with each other, and fondly recalled by one of them a few decades later.

Harry does give the impression that he feels he owns his mother's memory.

He does. It's not good.

spanieleyes · 20/01/2024 14:18

To be quite honest, when I first saw this story I assumed the organisers were just using his name as a publicity stunt. I didn't realise he was actually going to turn up and collect it!

EmpressSisi · 20/01/2024 14:27

“I was one year old when you danced with my mum. As you’ve told everybody here and continue to dine out on that probably every single night”

Yeah Harry, forget about Grease, Saturday Night Fever and Pulp Fiction. John Travolta is only famous for dancing with Princess Diana 🙄

Iwasafool · 20/01/2024 14:32

That comment about JT is really rude, particularly coming from someone who seems to dine out on stories about his family. I often think people are harsh about Harry although he has done some questionable things but I hate that sort of rudeness.

jeffgoldblum · 20/01/2024 14:40

I wonder what John travolta thought of that comment?
It really is very rude and patronising!

JSMill · 20/01/2024 14:46

H's 'joke' seems to imply JT sponged off his dm's fame. In fact, the reason why the dance made headlines is they were BOTH mega global icons at that time. Even if he's too young to appreciate how famous JT was at the time, it's still rude to say it.
I also thought the audience reaction to H was lukewarm at best.

jeffgoldblum · 20/01/2024 14:52

I thought Diana asked to dance with him as she was a huge fan ?

megletthesecond · 20/01/2024 15:00

If Harry meant it to be funny it did not come across well. JT and Diana were both legends when they danced.

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 20/01/2024 15:15

Actually, JT’s acting roles started drying up in the period after his dance with Diana, and that’s when he took up flying, with a view to becoming a professional pilot. He was then cast with fellow Scientologist, Kirstie Ally, in Look Who’s Talking, which was a surprise hit, and kickstarted his career. Then became a legendary cool dude with Pulp Fiction. I imagine Harry is actually quite jealous of the iconic moment between Travolta and Diana, Oedipal mess that he is.

Mumsnut · 20/01/2024 15:20

I’m sure he meant it as a joke. Would have been even better if he’d offered to give JT a twirl around the stage

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 20/01/2024 15:27

He’d need an actual sense of humour to dance with Travolta.

That's exactly it.
Incredibly rude to Travolta.

Mylovelygreendress · 20/01/2024 15:29

I really thought I would return to this thread to see lots of Sussex supporters saying that what Harry said to JT was hilarious and we all need to lighten up .
I suppose there’s time .

JSMill · 20/01/2024 15:30

jeffgoldblum · 20/01/2024 14:52

Yes. I'm old enough to remember when it happened!

wildernesssw · 20/01/2024 15:30

Yes, I am surprised by the absence as well...

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 20/01/2024 15:31

If you want to get analytical about it, Harry might subconsciously or consciously know he didn’t deserve the award, and was only getting it because of Travolta’s connection with his mother. He knows the ridicule this has created, and may have been taking out his anger at Travolta for getting him into the situation to start with (instead at looking in the mirror and asking himself why he accepted it).

Maireas · 20/01/2024 15:34

I don't think he's that clever or reflective. He's thinking "John Travolta? Danced with my mum. That's why he's so famous. That's why he's popular".

EdgarsTale · 20/01/2024 15:36

Well it was as cringey as predicted. He just isn’t funny, although he thinks he is & his comment to John Travolta was rude. He’s still dragging Diana’s memory into everything. So tedious.

Loveablockheel · 20/01/2024 15:39

What a horrible way to talk to JT, I bet he regrets nominating Harry now.
