William's Life's Work Is To End Homelessness.

Just seen this post about an article in the Daily Mail.
William say's life's work is to end homelessness. His father is (and soon enough himself) the largest land owner in the country.
Instead of posing with the same homeless guy year in and year out asking commoners to end homelessness surely he can carve out some of that land to build low rent flats and studios for the poorest. He never gives up any of his money for anything but is always asking. His expenses are paid for - holidays, children's fees, accommodation etc.
Or even use all the money that comes to them from people who died intestate. It's unhealthy to accumulate so much wealth without doing any work. Even doctors who study for years and save lives do not get anything close to this. It makes no sense.

The partners in Homewards a far from "a bit stupid"

He's got all the people who matter round a table in a way that doesn't seem to have happened before. And is aimed at tackling all angles of homelessness, which is significantly more complex than just building some homes in remote, semi-rural locations (where they happen to own land that would be OK to release)

TheCatfordCat · 06/12/2023 19:06

The POW should be doing much more to help end homelessness. He doesn't need^^ all his property, land and money. Why not invest in low cost social housing on his estates?

NoCloudsAllowed · 06/12/2023 19:08

Shrug. Is there a cause where the royals' massive privilege wouldn't cause a bit of cringe? I'm glad they support good causes, it does attract attention. Bring on the republic but in the meantime they might as well do some good.

Because much of it is in the arse end of beyond.

And the Homewards initiative is in areas of greatest need, which isn't where the estates are.

Or do you think that all the partners in Homewards have been so incompetent as to have chosen places where the issues are not acute?

FuckHonestlyKnows · 06/12/2023 19:30

No, I'm sure Ginger Spice was able to lend her decades of expertise.

LastChristmasIgaveyoumyTart · 06/12/2023 19:42

I came on to scoff at the idea that intestate estates go to the royal family but apparently it is so. Why the hell does it not go to hmrc to pay for public services?

It's not all intestate state, only those where no claimant can be found.

And other than Cornwall and the old version of Lancaster yes it all goes to the government

Yes and it is significantly more complex than just providing a home, at all. Some people seem (esp on this thread) seem to think that being homeless means the person just can't afford a home so if you give them one they will be just dandy. Rarely is that the real problem or the solution.

FuckHonestlyKnows · 06/12/2023 19:58

Where do you get the idea that people on this thread don't understand the complexity of homelessness?

Of course it is complex. Which makes it all the more despicable that the RF, with its untold millions, do so very little to tackle the issue.

TheCatfordCat · 06/12/2023 20:03

@WinnieTheW0rm Fair point.

I haven’t clicked on the article but am I alone in thinking the headline is low key mocking him ?

Agree. I thought that was surprising from the usually arse licky Mail!

That is true. I mean if they didnt partake in so much tax avoidance they could probably fund quite a few homeless shelters. Its all getting other people to do things at little inconvenience to themselves. Let's clap some environmental intiatives by the Little oeople because it will make up for mine and my famlys ginormous carbon footprint that I don't intend doing anyhhjbg about!

No, I'm sure Ginger Spice was able to lend her decades of expertise.

I know she went with him to one public visit, and is listed as one of the advocates (ie those who bring in public attention) but does she have much else to do with formulating Homewards' strategy or delivery programme? They do have quite a few advocates (ie celebrity patrons)

But also serious charitable partners, linked companies, and an expert panel that has an impressive level of expertise. It's definitely not just house-building (though that is included) and I do think the inclusion of the (often overlooked) global aspects is going to be important in finding the right solutions

Grimbelina · 06/12/2023 20:12

I felt similarly at Charles' speech 'The Earth does not belong to us' at COP28.. well actually quite a lot of the UK does seem to belong to you so....

I think he sees himself as a custodian - after all he doesn't own Cornwall now, but wants to see the estates go on and flourish. I think that's all of a piece with his championing of traditions crafts and industries

CathyorClaire · 06/12/2023 20:27

This is just one of Willy's multiple big projects.

He's such a busy boy.

Well that's OK then...

Can I ask what you make of the years of lying to the public that the funds have been going to charity?

HelenaCh9 · 06/12/2023 20:44

The daft gammons love him so I’m surprised that the Daily Mail headline is throwing a bit of shade.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 06/12/2023 20:54

“pal Dave” - I’m sure they stay in touch all year. And is Dave still homeless?

FuckHonestlyKnows · 06/12/2023 20:57

Yeah being besties with a rich dude doesn't seem to have transformed the guy's fortunes so far.

Fixed your post for you.

He could start by stopping the automatic right of people who have not made a will on their house, assuming it would go to their NOK going straight to the Crown Estate, if that is indeed the case, as was reported in the last few weeks!
