Just seen this post about an article in the Daily Mail.
William say's life's work is to end homelessness. His father is (and soon enough himself) the largest land owner in the country.
Instead of posing with the same homeless guy year in and year out asking commoners to end homelessness surely he can carve out some of that land to build low rent flats and studios for the poorest. He never gives up any of his money for anything but is always asking. His expenses are paid for - holidays, children's fees, accommodation etc.
Or even use all the money that comes to them from people who died intestate. It's unhealthy to accumulate so much wealth without doing any work. Even doctors who study for years and save lives do not get anything close to this. It makes no sense.

There is no reason for the Royal Family to give up what they have.... that way lies communism (& that hasn't gone well!).
Give the guy a break - he's trying to do something good here. He may not success, but at least he's giving it a go. Plenty of other people wouldn't touch this cause at all.

Give the guy a break

... the problem with this is we're talking about a TAX break of a couple of £billion in inheritance tax, which then needs to be paid for by those of us who pay tax on our hard-earned income.

It is just obscene.

lesdeluges · 07/12/2023 12:02

The optics are awful. Not the right cause for a wealthy landowning person with multiple properties, mostly empty apart from occasional visits.

Gives me the creeps that people could be sycophantic enough to laud him for this. Honestly words fail me.

derxa · 07/12/2023 12:03

I mean we can keep saying this but sadly people genuinely do think that the royal family is superior Do they? Not me. I've never met any member of the royal family nor do I wish to. William will not solve homelessness he is highlighting a problem. If he gave up all his land and homes tomorrow the problem would not be solved. I wonder who would buy the land or is it to be given to the Govt? The govt are so good at running things aren't they

Homelessness isn't really caused by lack of housing though. It contributes, but isn't the cause. It's right that "someone" is attempting a more multifaceted approach. Ideally it would be the government, but....

I agree with you. Homelessness is often caused by alcohol and drug problems and also mental health issues. No that I'm blaming people for that. It's heart breaking.

LimeCheesecake · 07/12/2023 12:25

I struggle to believe that you 'give a hoot' about the homeless because if you did, you would welcome anything that drew attention to the cause.

this wasn’t targeted at me but can I point out it’s a couple of weeks until Christmas- this is the one time of year homelessness doesn’t need attention drawing to it by a celebrity to get it discussed - this is the only time of year that suddenly it’s on our radar and in a sympathetic way. The “homelessness is a lifestyle choice” wouldn’t be trotted out this close to Christmas, because traditionally Christmas season is the only time the British public is sympathetic to homeless people.

if he’d done this in any other month, it would be drawing attention to a cause the public wouldn’t be thinking about /the press wouldn’t be writing about already.

To do it now doesn’t raise the profile of the problem and the charity, it raises the profile of the Prince’s charity work. Very different, very cynical. It’s so obvious, he’s even got the sneering article from the DM.

Do you think what he’s doing will not help at all? Or do you just object on the grounds that it might make him look good to some people?

Well in that case you'll no doubt be pleased to know that he was talking about the exact same issue back in June

Prince William describes ‘eye opening’ experience selling Big Issue

Prince William has revealed his mother’s commitment to the cause of homelessness inspired him to take to the streets of London selling the Big Issue – and said he wants to set the same example for his children.

So far, so exactly the same.

Please leave the children out of it. It wasn’t necessary to bring the child in to make your point.

Fair enough. Apologies for involving the children. I'm in a bad mood as I have a cold. I'll report my post

Agree with you both, I am disgusted to see how Archie and Lili are being brought into discussions elsewhere. It's particularly unpleasant on a parenting site.

I wish more posters were as sensible as you.

We should all be able to apologise and withdraw a message like this... I know I have done a couple of times in the past.

FuckHonestlyKnows · 07/12/2023 15:26

Nobody said he was a monster, just a bit...redundant maybe.

BucksorHerts · 07/12/2023 15:30

He recently inherited millions from his extremely wealthy grandmother's death, tax free might I add; so he got every single penny. Yet this guy is still on the streets daily, perhaps housed with tax payer's money.

In spite of his tax free inheritance windfall, no one in any charity has heard, seen or felt anything of it. Other than he and his wife show up in ever more expensive clothes and jewelry having been waited on hand and foot just to take photos and claim that's hard work. If that is hard work then what are the staff doing the actual work with whom they take photos doing?

He's gotten even wealthier having worked so hard in the past year, I hear a couple of billions in tax free inheritance from his wealthy grandma.

He's been very busy working hard https://twitter.com/RachelDani2016/status/1732733937418383858 and privately speaking to the press as usual https://x.com/honeyy/status/1731094417841565930?s=20

I know some royal-adjacent aristos who have dispensed with a butler and have a very small household staff. I think this is becoming the norm.

'Royal adjacent' aristos still have to budget, pay for their own roof repairs, abide by the law, maybe flog part of their house to the National Trust when they cant afford to run it, or hire it out to Netflix to film The Crown. The Royals dont have to do any of that. Which is probably why they dont, if they apparently hate the lack of privacy and press intrusion, decide to sack it off and live the lives of wealthy landowners like their friends.

I have to say... that statement made me laugh out loud, just ridiculous!
Next minute the Royals will be dispensing with the bagpiper, the royal shoe wearer and the Warden of the Swans! (Yes, these jobs exist!)
What a shock that will be if they have to go in cutbacks, how will they cope !

really is that the best you can do. I like him, but he does not live in the real world.
someone with so much money/land/homes, has no idea how real people live.
he doesn't work, yet gets a fortune.
its just spin, he will never end anything,

Angela Kelly wore the QE2’s shoes as they had the same shoe size but it wasn’t her job title, obviously - it was something she did as part of it to make an old lady’s life easier when so much of it was standing and walking and wearing out shoes.

Pipe Major Methven adored his job - 15 mins of his day was spent in a 180 year old tradition. He was very proud of it. You may think he and his successor don’t deserve to have a job they enjoy but it’s not like they couldn’t resign.

the Warden of the Swans is an actual title (unlike “royal shoe wearer”) a position of responsibility that has been around for 900 years and in practice is to count the swans and check their health.

Sneering at jobs that people do well and are happy in or proud of doesn’t seem like any kind of Gotcha.
