I think Netflix did want the royal gossip / Kardashian style reality stuff, which they got.

I also think that they did know H+M were amateurs, but were expecting them to be able to work with experienced professionals, take advice and learn on the job, while bringing A-list talent, glamour, free publicity and a big audience to their projects. Unfortunately that has all gone a bit wrong.

Just changing tack a bit, about a topic I mentioned upthread. One of Scobie's criticisms of William in Endgame is that he effectively has "silenced" Diana for asking for the now disgraced Diana/Martin Bashir interview to never be shown again. Conversely, he praised H&M for using clips of the interview in their Netflix series, saying they were "giving her a voice".

Journalist, Andy Webb, has been investigating Bashir, and how he induced Diana to agree to the interview. He used falsified bank statements to dupe both Diana and her brother, Charles, into believing that staff were taking bribes to betray her.

William has stated that the actions of Bashir made his mother extremely paranoid, and led to her letting go of her trained security - a move that may have resulted in her death. Scobie has accused William of stigmatising his mother with paranoia; and doing the same to Harry - because Harry must always be aligned to Diana, and somehow William is to blame for Harry's mental health issues becoming public, when it was Harry himself who first spoke of this publicly.

Mr Webb, with Charles Spencer's support, had been trying to get the BBC to respond to Freedom of Information requests pertaining to Bashir and the now disgraced documentary. He has now received a judgment from the court order for the release of these documents.

Everyone can feel disenchanted, disgruntled, disappointed and disenfranchised.

The trick is choosing your audience to relay that to. Not creating an audience.

Also, as PH will know from his former life, those you can truly trust would have been thin on the ground.

Quite why then he would choose to betray confidences or be indiscreet about those who he wants to ‘in with’ is beyond me.

He was welcomed with (what appeared to be) open arms by people who know what it feels like to be the subject of gossip and speculation. They know how it feels to be a dollar sign in someone else’s eyes. They would have thought they were amongst others who understood the unfairness of that…

I am not part of that starry world. I am only surmising. I would imagine they would close ranks fairly swiftly though. Just like the RF.

Hughs · 10/12/2023 17:55

And the British aristocracy too, I bet. All people for whom loyalty and discretion is super important. None of them is going to want someone around who can't be trusted not to share gossipy stories for money.

OhmygodDont · 10/12/2023 17:59

That’s the problem though isn’t it. Harry doesn’t realise that his blabber mouth matters now. Before he could basically do anything much loved grandchild to the queen. Now his grumpy Harry who hates his entire family while selling them and anyone else he can down the river then his shocked nobody wants to be near him.

For a man who needed to be set free to live his happy life he just seems to set on being an angry little man everyone and everything seems to of wronged him the only true love and safety being Megan while selling his ex’s stories in his books again.

I suspect that they also presumed Harry and Meghan would do promotion for their shows and have easy access to late night talk shows, newspaper articles etc for publicity but I don't think I saw any bit of media or promotion that either of them did to promote the Invictus documentary. Maybe I missed it but I really don't recall anything.

Other famous producers that I can think of like Shonda Rhimes, Ryan Murphy, Tyler Perry all have millions of social media followers, given Meghan has been pushing to get back on social media for a long while I wonder if Netflix assumed they'd be getting a large social media push as well.

Before I wrote the above I was just checking that all the people I named were on social media and saw that Tyler Perry has photos of him and Oprah at the Colour Purple premiere this week, would love to know if Harry and Meghan got an invite

LeggyLegsEleven · 10/12/2023 18:03

I thought it was very interesting that they weren’t invited to the big Clooney charity event recently, even after inviting them to the wedding.

Especially when they've been keeping their mouth shut for years about Harrys antics. I would say there are stories and photos out there that would pale in comparison to anything that Harry admitted in Spare.

Just look at the discretion of the woman he lost his virginity to, she could have sold that story at anytime but kept her mouth shut out of loyalty before it was told without even being cleared with her

They don't get invited to any of the big things, if you think about it. They weren't invited to Obama's birthday party. They never get invited to the Met Ball. They didn't get invited to the Clooneys' charity event, despite them being desperate to be seen as philanthropists and having invited the Clooneys (who they didn't even know!) to their wedding. They get invited to bullshit stuff like the Variety Women in Power event and the Gracie Awards and the Ripple of Hope Awards and they turn up, like two people desperate to be seen on a red carpet at all, any red carpet, anywhere! And then they make some stupid song and dance about the NY traffic and that overshadows the whole stupid event they were at. They really should stay at home, count their millions and just raise their kids in the CA sunshine.

ArcaneWireless · 10/12/2023 18:18

If they didn’t receive an invite that must have nipped a bit.

Gowlett · 10/12/2023 18:24

I think it wasn’t cool with the billionaires when they were photographed on that exclusive “private” Caribbean island. Have they been to Necker, yet? Harry must have been before.

Also, Meghan said that when they saw the house in Montecito they didn’t want to view it as it was out of their league (financially). Then suddenly, they were moving in. Strange…

LeggyLegsEleven · 10/12/2023 18:31

They won’t get invited to the Met Ball as Anna W is a fan of Catherine.

He doesn't hate his whole family . He seems to be fond.of his cousins and his mum's sisters.

To be fair, that is not a reason not to invite them to the Met Ball. Catherine won't be going. I suspect they are just not on Anna Wintour's radar as fashion icons.

They weren't invited to the Oscars either, not even to Elton's party.

I think it is - Anna W will not be well-disposed towards them for a start, and will not want to annoy Kate?

Gowlett · 10/12/2023 18:44

As far as not being invited, I think Meg’s plan was to take time out for the kids & make a big Hollywood / social media comeback next year. And let Harry get on with promo for Spare / Invictus etc… They’ll need to come out as a couple now though, after this scandal. A united front is the only answer. So, it may scupper Meghan’s immediate career plans.

Also, why Scobie? If they / Harry hate the press (royal correspondents) so much… Then this guy was a very poor choice!

HotGirlInHell · 10/12/2023 18:44

They're not financially in the same league as the Clooneys etc are they, so wouldn't be 'useful' guests to have at a charity event.

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 10/12/2023 18:44

@Hughs , I don't know what relationship AW has with Catherine other than admiration, so happy to be corrected. Didn't Meghan guest edit Vogue? Ultimately, AW is all about the fashion and the icons. MM is not an exemplar of fashion and wearing clothes well (I do like a lot of her clothes and I think she has a nice figure and taste, but the execution is not the perfection that icon status demands).

Did they want to goto the Oscars? Did any of The Royals go to The Oscars or Elton's party? What's the obsession with What the Sussexes are invited to?

Exactly.
The poor taste demonstrated by Harry in "Spare" is just astonishing. What grown man writes about frostbite on his penis, let alone someone who depends on the mystique of royalty for his livelihood? We didn't need to know how, when and with whom he lost his virginity, or that awful tale about the disabled woman at his boarding school.

And he has a nerve griping about security after talking about the "kills" he did while in the forces. It's sickening.

No one of quality is going to want these two indiscreet users and grifters in their lives.

It's going to be a vicious downward cycle as the more desperate they get, the more they will try to monetize others' private and personal issues and anecdotes. Then the more distanced their former friends and "celebrity" associates will be.

I shake my head. They were SO popular and wished so well. Think of the special accommodations the queen made, think of Charles walking her down the aisle and putting Doria on his arm after the wedding service, and the queen providing them with residences.

And ALL they have done since Day One is promote grievances, gripes and chips on their shoulders. Many of which are embellished, exaggerated or outright lies.

Right. Lady Gaga is a fashion icon.

Meghan is just a sometimes expensively dressed woman who is slim. With the right amount of money and professional assistance, most of us could meet that standard.

Mylovelygreendress · 10/12/2023 18:48

As far as Netflix is concerned , I would imagine the idea was for H and M to be followed by their cameras at any events they attended but that was swiftly knocked on the head . Just like when they wanted to take their photographer with them to capture the Lilibet meets Lilibet moment but were told no.

Because they are in the entertainment industry now, and the Oscars are the pinnacle.

They didn't get an Emmy nomination for the docuseries. Nor did Harry get a Grammy nomination for Spare (audio version). These are the sorts of awards that make you a major player in the industry.
