La Pom Pom Girl is doing the Double Dutch. But who is turning the skipping ropes? Part three/trois/drie of the continuing discussion of Endgame by Omid Scobie. Previous thread:

Sophie was the one who offered to mentor Meghan and rode with her in the car to The Queen's funeral, two very kind acts. I really hope Meghan hasn't thrown her under the bus here. If Meghan had nothing to do with this book, she needs to come out and say it.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 05/12/2023 00:58

I wouldn’t be surprised if there was jealousy in some quarters (not specifically saying Megan btw, just making a general point as she’s come up) about Sophie’s closeness to the Queen.

Apparently they spent hours diving into the royal archives together searching for things about military history. The Queen visiting Sophie in hospital after Louise’s birth was also very telling and there was an article once about how upset the Queen was that the extra security the royals have delayed the ambulance arriving which put Sophie and louise in grave danger.

Here's a piece from John Crace, the Guardian's political sketch writer, today. (He's one of the best writers left on the Guardian.)

That made me properly laugh. It’s hilarious. Thank you!

I think Kate sussed Meghan out right from the very start, or at least within a few weeks of meeting.

I agree. I think William did too.

Oprah had MM's number for the very beginning. She will have met hundreds and hundreds of wannabe pretty HW aspiring actresses along the way. She didn't get to be billionaire Oprah without knowing how to 'manage' people like Meghan Markle - in her world, she's small fry. That interview was designed by Oprah to let the couple show the world who they are. H&M thought they were showing themselves to be horribly wronged victims who deserve the world's sympathy. Oprah KNEW they were showing themselves up to be what we're seeing them for now.

If H&M are as they are in public now (post Spare, Netflix etc), imagine what they're like in private. Oprah would have spotted it at 20 paces. She used them, letting H&M think they were deigning to allow her to use them. She got the world-exclusive interview with a renegade British royal, which she's been after since Diana.

You may be right. I understand the logic, however, I am finding it hard to believe that Oprah was playing such a long game.

If she were playing that game, why would she not have asked gentle probing questions to subtly ‘out’ Meghan? Why did she not challenge any, single comment? And why did she fill in the gaps, eg the ‘concerns’ about what their baby would look like?

Oprah’s reactions and facial expressions may well have not been on first take... or if they were, she may well have been acting. Lest we forget, she is an Oscar winning actress twice over. Oprah is a tv persona. We simply don’t know who she is irl.

If this were the case, the would mean Oprah knowingly made herself look like a fool the world over. Who knows?

YourNameGoesHere · 05/12/2023 05:49

Isn't it funny how's she's only ever photographed when there's a news story that needs attention shifting from it. Whether that's something to do with Harry and her or some royal news that needs one-upping...

Chouxpastryishard · 05/12/2023 05:50

Well someone was predicting she would be photographed on Friday to take attention off the Royal event.

cocolocopocos · 05/12/2023 06:31

I guess she's hoping the drama will soon blow over. I wonder if she's right.

I don't think Harry will be on the guest list at Sandringham anytime soon, but people in the US probably don't care about the Scobie book or wedding snubs.

I thought poor Sophie had really drawn the short straw with the riding in the car. I mean- what on earth could she say or not say during that ride? Anything - no matter how banal- was going to be rehashed manipulated and the worst possible spin put on it at a later date.

Bookworm1111 · 05/12/2023 06:49

I guess she's hoping the drama will soon blow over. I wonder if she's right.

She'd like it to blow over because she cannot condemn Scobie for the racist Royals outrage because it's extremely* likely all roads lead back to her, and if this goes to court she could be asked to give evidence on the stand about whether she supplied the names. So instead she's prancing around publicly in her gym gear to ensure her picture is taken by her favourite pap agency Backgrid, which I imagine will infuriate William even more.

I'm actually starting to feel a bit sorry for PH. Aggrieved though he's been with his family, the comment attributed to him in Endgame about how he wanted to move on – "I’m ready to forget. Get an apology or explanation? At this point, who cares, right?" – suggests he's reached a point where he genuinely misses them. The racist Royals row has pretty much made reconciliation with William so unlikely that the next and only time they meet may well be at their father's funeral.

I feel sorry for PH. He was yearning for Civvy Street (or parts of it) but it was never going to be what he hoped for.

The comments under the Mail article are hilarious...people freaking out because Meghan is smiling!! How dare she smile! I get that people dislike or resent her, but sometimes it verges on the ridiculous.

shockthemonkey · 05/12/2023 06:57

@AutumnCrow , that article is pure gold! Just what I needed to put a smile on my face 😂

She certainly has a knack for irritating the bejesus out of people 😂

parksandrecs · 05/12/2023 07:16

John Crace is brilliant, his articles are always a highlight!

It is also quite funny how some people get upset by Leghan being photographed smiling...!

However, the options for the release of names about the 'racist comment' royals are that OS made it up, or that the names were leaked. Given Meghan has been proved to have briefed OS before (after first denying it on oath), it does tend to suggest there was a leak of private correspondence coming from her.

Oh, never read the btl comments, it's a whole weird world.

Vespanest · 05/12/2023 07:24

No sympathy for Harry, he’s a grown man who for too long has been infantilised, Him and Omid have both played the “I’m mot calling them racist”, except Omid’s memory is shit. They both know exactly the interpretation and how the royals would be treated especially the women. Harry is a coward, who throws grenades and blames those around him. I think Harry will come out and say something but not until he has made sure William has suffered enough. If they were racist Harry should have used his words and gave details but he has to be the saviour.

Maireas · 05/12/2023 07:33

"It's all so unfair, Omid, I'm only a jobbing millionaire" 😂
John Crace is very funny!

SkyFullofStars1975 · 05/12/2023 07:38

Hmm I wonder how Harry is feeling about all of this. The fact that Meghan is arranging pap walks with a rictus grin on her face would indicate that she's enjoying this attention and trying to deflect. I take that to mean that there's no apology for William and Charles in the post with a christmas card...

MrsLeonFarrell · 05/12/2023 07:43

That is a typical Zoe Williams article, she never presents indepth arguments about anything but simply record lists of things that seem to support the opinion she has already formed without any analysis or consideration that the topic may be a bit complicated. (I do think there are things that the royal family need to take seriously in this whole mess but I don't think that article is good at highlighting them.)

One single example, because I haven't had my coffee yet,
"The charge of racism, however, will not evaporate: it is not just the extraordinary crassness/white supremacist bouquet you can smell in that Archie remark"

She is hanging serious accusations of racism on a remark that a) has never been repeated publically by anyone involved and b) that Harry himself denied was racist. The rest of the article is the same, taking things that are written about, however vaguely, in this book and Spare as completely accurate because they feed into her dislike of monarchy.

To go back to the thread topic, this is where I think Scobie has sabotaged himself. What he writes is so badly written and biased that it can't really be used to seriously analyse the monarchy. Plus his track record of lying about Finding Freedom and the Dutch situation means that he is not really seen as a good reliable source anyway.

parksandrecs · 05/12/2023 07:55

The charge of racism has yet to have any substance, in that we still haven't been told what was said, and by whom.

It isn't so much 'it won't go away', more 'it hasn't been made with enough information for anyone to come to a conclusion'.

Exactly! It's all pretty outrageous and, frankly, libellous

@Mummyoflittledragon Oprah has never won as Oscar. Nominated twice, but no wins.
