La Pom Pom Girl is doing the Double Dutch. But who is turning the skipping ropes? Part three/trois/drie of the continuing discussion of Endgame by Omid Scobie. Previous thread:

I'm not sure what is the correct etiquette for carrying on a thread, but here we are. Thanks to {mention:BoxedandRibboned} for the original thread....

It's like the 'global' stuff. 'Their global press spokesperon said ...'

Always trying to hitch a ride to relevance on the back of self-aggrandising semantics.

diddl · 02/12/2023 16:52

I think fir a while the D&D of Windsor were quite feted.

Didn't they end up just about scrounging off others though?

Living rent free?

Maybe wrong.

An Wilson has an article in today's Mail and he makes the point that the publication in Dutch would have been a pretty small run, what with most Dutch people speaking excellent English; so pulping that run would not have been a huge financial hit while at the same time getting the royal racists accusation out there.

My very thought, MrsD (and OP Smile)
I've said from the start that this whole thing may be a stunt rather than having any basis in fact, but then I wouldn't be looking to Scobie for facts in the first place

smilesy · 02/12/2023 17:04

What I am wondering is, if the Sussexes had stayed as part of the RF, would any of these accusations have ever have surfaced?

No of course not. They only came to light because they needed some material to cash in on.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/12/2023 17:12

Not sure about about "rent free" @diddl - I thought they got the Paris place at a peppercorn rent from the local government? - but it's said that as compensation for his loss of the Civil List Edward received an allowance of £21k a year from the new king

Apparently that's about £1.4 million in today's money, so doubtless it would have helped to keep the wolf from the door

Yes it probably was more peppercorn.

Didn't he sell Sandringham & Balmoral to his brother?

Or part sell & rent?
Plus an allowance as you say.

Sounds a huge amount of money tome.

I guess it depends on your lifestyle!

Wallis certainly had some fabulous jewels!

Maireas · 02/12/2023 17:20

Plus, he had the money from the sale of Balmoral and Sandringham to Bertie, which had been technically his.

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstotheyard · 02/12/2023 17:26

I didn't know those properties went into Edward's personal ownership, regardless of his status as king/abdicator. I thought they would just pass to whoever was monarch at any given time.

The whole story is fascinating. I got quite into it and read a lot of books on the subject.
It'll derail the thread to discuss it more, but it's very interesting.

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstotheyard · 02/12/2023 17:30

I won't derail - but I will look that up, so thank you for that new (to me) nugget of information.

Didn't he sell Sandringham & Balmoral to his brother?

He did, yes; they're counted as private properties which are inherited by whoever becomes monarch, so when Edward presumably didn't want them any more George was expected to pay

HonoriaLucastaDelagardie · 02/12/2023 17:37

I think he had a life-interest in them. Though they were not Crown properties, they passed to the heir to the throne for his/her lifetime. The possibility of abdication hadn't been taken into account, so he was no longer King but stlll had the lifetime possession of Balmoral and Sandringham. There was some protracted haggling between him and Bertie over him renouncing the life-interest, and over other financial matters, which didn't help family relations, and pissed off people such as Churchill, who had previously suppported him.

It would be a great relief to us all if the palace would just carry out a full investigation, make a full statement about the racism accusations, briefing against H&M, and anything else they'd like to get off their chest. Make it clear that the Sussexes will or won't be keeping their titles, ensure us they are out of the royal inner circle, and are now irrelevant.

So they can move in with their work, if Charles doesn't decisively draw a line under this now and end it his entire reign will be plagued and overshadowed by Harry's accusations and complaining.

Times have changed, with digital and social media, stories, gossip & bullying carries on gaining a life if it's own. It's not like in the Queen's day, when todays newspapers were used to wrap tomorrows fish & chips in and stories were soon forgotten.

But like I said before, how can you 'investigate' unspecified 'comments' when you don't even know who allegedly made them and when? Even Harry and Meghan couldn't align their stories.

And the royals did make a statement. They said 'recollections may vary' and that any 'investigation' will take place privately. That's enough. Responding now will just give the accusations oxygen and open the door to more of the same. I disagree that it won't blow over. Scobie's book is already tumbling down the bestsellers list only a few days after release. He and the Sussexes have made themselves irrelevant with their juvenile goading. Why give them legitimacy?

diddl · 02/12/2023 17:55

I think that the RF are better off not adding any fuel to the fire & treating like the nonsense it is.

Maireas · 02/12/2023 17:56

I agree, @IcedPurple . There's nothing more to say.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/12/2023 17:57

Nice idea in principle, but Harry can (and does) say whatever he wants, and I can't help feeling that any response will just start the whole ghastly merry-go-round off again

Given that they all lie when it suits and Charles is in no position to whine about people doing unwelcome books/interviews, it's perhaps the better choice to just keep his mouth shut

I’ve just listened to James O’Brien’s podcast, Omid was this weeks guest. It was interesting that he made the point about the press chasing Rose Hanbury before loads of negative stories and H&M came out to distract them. It was definitely a warning that he will talk more about the Rose Hanbury story if the palace escalate him naming the ‘racist’ royals.

Makemydaypunk · 02/12/2023 18:09

The thing is if the palace don’t react, yet again there are no consequences to their actions so in a few months time once the dust has settled on this sorry saga there will be something else that they will do, how much more can one family take?

Mumsnut · 02/12/2023 18:11

If he could have talked about Rose Hanbury without legal consequences, I think he would have done so already

Couldn't any journalist, and I use the term generously in his case, do the same?

It's not like he has any inside information other than the exiles.

But even if it was the right thing to do, what possible consequences could the palace put in place which would shut Scobie, H and M up?

I suppose they could risk suing over such-and-such a claim, but how would that stop them just coming up with another one?
