I'm not sure what is the correct etiquette for carrying on a thread, but here we are. Thanks to @BoxedandRibboned for the original thread.

I guess it depends what you mean by submitted. If you mean handed in the final version, he may be telling the truth. I wouldn't call running a preliminary version by my editor for the legal team to look at submitting a manuscript.

Also just on the legalities, the translators are the legal authors of their language versions. I don't imagine it is what happened here but translators can and do use some leeway to rewrite texts if they need to.

I'm a translator. It's pretty obvious to me that the Dutch etc versions were produced from an earluer, unedited versuon of the manuscript, there wouldn't have been enough time to work from the completed version and hit the deadline. The names were most likely taken out at the editing stage under legal guidance but they didn't pass ghe edits on to the foreign publishers. That would be a typical publishing balls up in my experience.

But OS claims that he 'never submitted a book containing the names' so is he lying?

seems most likely.

What an idiot. Did he think we all thought she might be an actual literal Stepford wife. Is he gaslighting everyone per chance!

He's splitting hairs between a metaphor and a simile ... and/or he didn't write it himself.

He has form for lying “misremembering “

What an interesting time for Team Sussex to suddenly recognize the value of "Never complain, never explain."

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 30/11/2023 21:29

So someone really needs to ask him 'did you at any point write a manuscript for this book that contained the names?' to stop the slimy little shithead from trying to wriggle out of it.

Maireas · 30/11/2023 21:47

They should just leave it. Rise above this kind of nonsense.

Totally, Harry should hold his head in shame. He is a pathetic specimen

Chouxpastryishard · 30/11/2023 22:27

I think he should have started hanging his head in shame some while ago.

mrsmingleton · 30/11/2023 22:36

I agree @Maireas. It's reasonable for the Palace to take advice but all the lying, subterfuge and hoo ha over this actually detracts from who said anything and what it was .

googlejourney · 30/11/2023 22:43

The Sussex's should denounce the book, it's the right thing to do, but Scobie will have so much dirt on them, they can't risk alienating him.
I believe the RF are coming out of this with more support and sympathy, it's a win for them. The book will be a best seller, so a win for Scobie, the only losers are H&M, but that's what happens when you sell your souls to the devil.

HeddaGarbled · 01/12/2023 01:21

I don’t think Omid Scobie has any “dirt”. His information is either stuff they’ve fed him via employees or unsubstantiated gossip from associates.

I read the book and in the English version there wasn't anything that you couldn't glean from reading tabloids, forums etc.

It would be far more interesting if someone with real connections wrote a similar book and actually came at it from an objective perspective.

I really hope the Dutch translators sue him, throwing them under the bus and implying they came with the names themselves is so easily provable to be false.

YourNameGoesHere · 01/12/2023 07:22

Apparently he's refusing to apologise now because it's not for him to apologise... He's also still banging on about the English version of the book that he wrote, he edited and he signed off on.

Methinks he doth protest too much, he has no clue how publishing works and he needs to learn when to stop talking.

So in the Oprah interview
Meghan said she wouldn’t say who it was because
It would be very damaging

I for one don’t believe this information wasn’t passed to Omid - who she eventually admitted briefing for his other pile of tosh

So she has knowingly passed on information to this author that she herself has said will damage them

How kind

No rebuttal from Harry or Meghan
He really is a piece of work - they aren’t her family so she is just plain nasty

Exactly! This info HAS to have come from Meghan and/or Harry and if half of Fleet Street knew the ID of the 'royal racists', sorry 'royals with unconscious bias' then this is an open secret and they probably told lots of people. They are full of shit and they wanted this info out there.

Maireas · 30/11/2023 21:47

They should just leave it. Rise above this kind of nonsense.

I'm not sure they can now. The Guardian and Times have both named them overnight too, as have multiple media outlets overseas. They should get lawyers involved.

I see Scobie is now moaning about "irresponsible people" sharing the names online, while 'a friend of' Meghan has claimed to the Telegraph that it wasn't anyone from her camp who briefed him on the names and she never intended them to ever be made public. Thus confirming the names.

I honestly think there is no coming back for MM and PH from this in terms of the UK's public perception. We all know how devastating it can be to be wrongly branded racist in this day and age - if you're going to throw out such damaging accusations, at least have the courage of your convictions and stand by them.

10WildDogs · 01/12/2023 07:44

This claim from Camp Sussex that the letter was not leaked from their side. So are they suggesting it must have been leaked from the Palace side?

You can just see Harry alleging that this is just another leak from the Palace where members of the RF leak info and place stories to discredit each other. The whole thing is just so tedious.

Maireas · 01/12/2023 07:44

This, absolutely, @Bookworm1111 .
There has been little courage, decency or kindness from the Sussex camp.
Taking a Kennedy "Ripple of Hope" award for challenging racism. Or just making vague damaging comments?

They are, but it's absolutely ridiculous. Why on earth would the Palace leak a letter with the names in?

10WildDogs · 01/12/2023 07:48

Also glad the interpreter is sticking up for herself. No doubt she signed an NDA when she translated the book. Scobie no doubt assuming that due to the NDA she wouldn't speak and he could say what he wanted to unchallenged.

"Was she silent or was she silenced'. Good for her for speaking up.

YourNameGoesHere · 01/12/2023 07:48

Indeed!

Also I'm pleased to see more people coming out to support the translators who have been well and truly chucked under the bus by Omid. Thankfully most people can see through the bullshit being spouted.

10WildDogs · 01/12/2023 07:51

@Bookworm1111 totally and they can't use the old favourite of Charles briefing against his children or William briefing against his father - as both Charles and Catherine are named. It would make no sense. Or are they suggesting that Andrew got hold of it and leaked it in revenge for being stripped of his duties.

Do you know, I bet Harry does actually mind how Kate’s being treated. I think he was genuinely fond of her pre-marriage. This racism row isn’t his (what with him being amongst the worst of the lot - don’t buy his “seeing of the light” for one second. He’s just doing what his wife says he needs to do for them to succeed in her world (ha, the irony)).

But I just can’t see how he can be publicly supportive of Kate, when his wife has been so publicly awful about her. I don’t think he’s got the necessary backbone or brains to tread the line between wife and sister-in-law/future Queen and keep them both happy.

If we do get a statement from him/them, you can bet Meghan will have extracted a heavy price from him for what she will consider her humiliation.

Why is it automatically Meghan that has been ' awful to her'? He was the one who was party to the conversation. He was the one who relayed the information to her. He was the one who didn't correct her perceptions of the conversation before, during, or after the Oprah interview. Meghan is the only one of the two of them who has had anything nice to say about Kate since this whole circus began. No one knows what his relationship with Kate really was. He was a man in his 30s trailing after his older brother and his wife like a 3rd wheel, and all the PR was that he was happy with that. Who knows what the truth was. Its clear they were ( probably justifiably) concerned about the relationship, and that accirdingvto Harry led to dome heated rows. This never ends well in any family andcits likely that some things were said in anger so their previous relationship doesn't really come into it. It's never the Royal's fault. They are always poor put upon innocents at the mercy of ruthless women. Meghans fault Harry is a spoilt brat. Wallis Simpsons fault Edward viii was a nazi, Virginia Guiffres fault Prince Andrew loved hanging out with sex offenders...

Frankly the entire sorry lot are a waste of space and need to get in the bin.
