Well it’s more likely it’s referencing the final stage of a chess game than American football but I do agree it’s a bizarrely hyperbolic title.
I suspect part of the problem is that Scobie was assuming that the Monarchy was only being held up by affection for the Queen and that past poor public polling of Charles would mean the disintegration of the institution and a swiftly greater push to republicanism.
The problem is it took so long for his book to come out that we’ve seen how little push back to Charles there was, how his poll numbers and that of the royal family in general are still positive, and that the royal family have just continued doing their engagements and not courting any drama.
And he hasn’t really got any good insider gossip which would help the book sell. Well maybe he has as there have only been a few extracts so far.
But no one is buying this as some intellectual review of the role and future of the monarchy in the UK so he’d be better off marketing it as a fun, gossipy romp behind the scenes.
