Buckingham Palace denies claims Charles ‘might offer Harry a royal home’ in UK

This story is curious. There are versions in the Telegraph, Daily Mail and Times as well. With Buckingham Palace emphatically denying it - Harry seems the likely source. Is he trying to force the RF to give him a permanent home in the UK?

Ordinarily, it would seem a reasonable enough thing to expect, but of course, things are no longer 'normal'. After Harry's disloyalty to both the family and the institution, it is a bit cheeky to expect to be given free home on royal property?

Why would he even want to accept such a gift? He is independent grown up no longer a part of "the institution" I wouldn't go back if I felt so strongly about it

Howsimplywonderful · 25/09/2023 21:01

Perhaps some of their super fans could offer H&M a place to stay in the U.K.

I’m sure there’s a Netflix series in it - perhaps a knock out to compete for the pleasure of hosting them or perhaps viewers could see the spare rooms on offer could vote

Wonderful fun

givemeasunnyday · 25/09/2023 21:07

Any reason he can't behave like the adult he supposedly is and organise his own accomodation for his family should he wish to visit the UK - like other people do?

Howsimplywonderful · 25/09/2023 21:16

@givemeasunnyday

He did found Travalyst a sustainable travel company

Sheep Sheep and more Sheep 🐑 stop believing everything you see read or hear in the media .

whywouldyousaythat · 25/09/2023 21:58

He could rock up to the Clooney's place if they would have him, apparently that has been sitting empty for the last two years or so.

Howsimplywonderful · 25/09/2023 22:13

I like the idea of fans competing in rounds on Netflix to host them

Round 1 - best breakfast for H&M - judged by the public
Round 2 - ironing test - first to get the creases out of their visitors clothes
Round 3 - best reading of selected passages spare/the bench
Round 4 - best tour of the local sites with H&M
Then it gets exciting
Semi final - best chase through the local area
Final - fans get to dress H&M

Netflix’s biggest ever hit

Unless …. A documentary as Harry follows Ari Emmanuel Into the world of WWE and starts a wrestling career as ‘The Prince of Hearts’

upinaballoon · 25/09/2023 22:16

Inventive. Now I'm going to have to look up who Ari Emmanuel is.

VeloVixen · 25/09/2023 22:17

How much notice do they really need in order to make him up a bed? I’m sure any of the residences could spare a maid for ten minutes to make a bed up?

Medlady · 25/09/2023 22:26

I think when the monarch is at Balmoral for the summer, Windsor does genuinely more or less close down domestically. . Staff that didn’t go up North have their holidays, and the decorators come in and deep cleaning is done. Hence he couldn’t stay there at short notice when he asked. Surprised there wasn’t anywhere else though

VeloVixen · 25/09/2023 22:28

Yeah even if Windsor was off limits surely someone is in Buckingham palace or clarance house or St James? I guess maybe Buckingham palace might be off limits due to tourists in the summer?

Medlady · 25/09/2023 22:30

I do t think BH has any domicillary aspect any more, does it?

BigFatLiar · 25/09/2023 22:31

After all that's happened I wouldn't give them house room if I was Charles. Probably just looking for more stuff for his next series. Was going to be how dad was so mean and unreasonable when I stayed will now be dad is so unreasonable he won't get me a house.

No idea what actually happened, I thought Charles offered to have him at Balmoral where he was but that wasn't what Harry wanted. I suspect they need notice as they need to make sure there are staff available.

I think maybe Windsor isn’t really staffed that much anymore. It was only the Queens apartments that were residential anyway. They’d have had to open it up and get a staff there. The article from his supporter said he wanted to stay there. Probably didn’t want anywhere else and anyway same rule apply. You can’t stay at Buck House and the rest would have to be staffed. The ones who live in James’ have their own places. Ditto Kensington. Why couldn’t he stay with Eugenie? Or Beatrice? Or any other relative.

it all sounds pretty logically. They needed notice that he was coming. He didn’t give it. But in fairness to him, it probably hadn’t entered his head he needed to do that as he had always had these things just magically happen. I was at Frogmore last year just before they arrived and peering in at the cottage there were people there preparing the house and all there garden furniture was waiting outside for them etc.

it’s common curtsey. They’d have needed to organise a chef to be the works.

Didn’t Harry and Meghan pay rent on frogmore in advance but were thrown out of it before the rent term was up? And had to be paid back the rent they’d already paid? Remember thinking at the time this was a terrible move by Charles.

No, they got at least 6 months extension on the original term (source for length of term: BBC report on financial deal) with no word on further payment.

The Independent article doesn't make it terribly clear what the Palace actually said - as they mentioned a number of points then said the Palace issued a denial, without being clear which of their points it referred to.

So possibly it was for need for a Counsellor of State to maintain a UK residence (they can't act whilst domiciled abroad, but would anyone really think it was a good idea to bring Harry back to rule (as one of two CoS's activated at the time) when there's already the choice of William, Anne, Edward and Beatrice in the country?

Or was it a denial that a specific accommodation request had been made? Or that any request had been made?

Yes it has apartments - I think the Princess Royal and the Edinburghs still stay there from time to time, and I think they have suites for senior visitors (unless those visitors prefer accommodation arranged by their Embassy/High Commission)

Plus it's where quite a lot of staff live.

I think it's likely to be fairly straightforward to put him up there, providing he gave noticeof when he would be turning up.

PamelaAndreaGryglaszewska · 25/09/2023 22:52

I thought he owns a house in the Cotswolds. Why can’t he use that?

AuroraCake · 25/09/2023 22:54

It’s not an Independent article. Palace just denied they were giving Harry a home in Uk. Original article did go on about about the COS. Maybe it’s important to Harry. He’d never be called anyway. There are plenty of them around. And most don’t really go abroad anyway so unlikely to be a disaster. There are rare occasions that two are needed but those are at events when the monarch would always schedule to be there and if it was a case, like last year, that Charles is very ill (hopefully years from now) and his step mother and aunt and uncle are similarly elderly, there is Beatrice and in 11 years George would will be one.

No they are all at St James. Staff work there sure but Buck house is undergoing extensive reinventions. I think they do, or did in recent past, put people up for nights. But the time of the jubilee none of the family stayed there so they be not having people a the moment.

PamelaAndreaGryglaszewska · 25/09/2023 23:04

I’m sure Elton John also has a spare room Harry could use.

They rented a place Oxfordshire way before they got Windsor.

Failing to provide a safe place to stay for Prince Archie and Princess Lili should they visit the UK...

This story isn't going to go down well... for King Charles and the Palace

Theres a big difference between giving him a permanent residence or accommodating them if they were visiting

I'm sure if a visit from the children was in the pipeline KC would be more than happy to put the family up

I disagree. Why should they get welcomed with opened arms after the trouble they've caused. And apparently Harry can't be a Counsellor of state unless he has a residence in the UK. I don't think there is any reason to think this is untrue.

Oh right, just a rental.

What about the Spencers? They could stay with his uncle, and go and speak to Diana’s grave.
