I don't understand people that lap up the bollocks. Honestly what is wrong with them? I hate all inherited title it perpetuates the ridiculous class system in this country.

How would you change the class system in this country? Would you make a class-less society? Do you think that would be possible? If the monarchy ceased to exist, would we have a class-less society?

Who makes the bollocks? Do newspapers and TV stations 'bow and scrape' more than the people do? I think there's more sycophancy in the words used on news reports and programmes about the RF than there is from folks on the street. Suppose 3 women went and camped on the Mall for the coronation. Did the king demand that they did? I doubt it. If they were interviewed by the TV would they really be bowing and scraping and subjugating themselves or would they more likely be 3 women having a couple of away-days up the smoke with whatever fun that brought. Do you really think that Lindsay from Hull honestly sees Charles as miles above her in every way, or is she simply happy to accept that he's no BETTER than she is but that in the way of human beings and their societies, he's HIGHER in this place, at this time?

Not to derail the thread but I’d vote in Brian Cox. There’s something very reassuring about him. I find him extremely creepy. Why in God's name would he want to be president?

Actor or stargazer?

Norway is a beautiful country but you are implying 'so much better than the UK' in terms of society
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racism_in_Norway

I did not say that.

Please don't make out I implied ANYTHING.
I happen to have been to Norway last month and just said it was a beautiful country and when I said very different to us....it is!
But not for the reasons YOU are implying.

@Angrycat2768 That is why they shouldn’t be in their position. What is so special about them? Nothing! Why do people want to bow and scrape to them? It beggars belief.

The thing that is special is that they have high positions in the way that our society has organised itself. People don't all want to bow and scrape to the RF any more than they want to bow and scrape to the boss, the manager, the headmaster et cetera, but they are willing to show respect to the title, rather than the individual, and they like looking at the frocks, the same as seeing what they're all wearing on Strictly, and might be interested in the charities which members of the RF are championing.

stargazer. The actor is a Scot Nat famous for yelling 'Fuck off'.

as a nation we are too apathetic to have a revolution, unlike the french.

"It may be we shall rise the last as Frenchmen rose the first,
Our wrath come after Russia's wrath and our wrath be the worst..."

Di da, di da, di da, di da, I can't remember the next bit but it certainly means that we can't be bothered to be as revolting as the French so let's all go down the boozer.

Spudlet · 24/09/2023 13:54

Honestly, I feel more or less the same as I did before the Queen died: ‘meh’ 🤷‍♀️

He was quite hunky in the film 'Troy' - riding around in his little chariot.

emmylousings · 24/09/2023 13:59

They should pay tax and the civil list (tax payers subsidy of their lavish lives) should be abolished. If Camilla can afford Dior outfits, they don't need our money. Scroungers, who consistently go out their way to hide their vast wealth from their subjects. And yes, you are a subject, not a citizen. In 2023.

colourwheelofortune · 24/09/2023 14:01

The monarchy has its pros and cons. However I am a better the devil you know kind of person. The thought of having to vote for someone to be a president every x number of years fills me with dread.

To me we've seen the RF since we were born, watched many TV programs about them giving an insight into them as people (excluding the Crown). We've learned that Andrew is a POS so avoid at all costs. We've seen the queen do a sterling job for 70 years, respected by all world leaders, and see Charles and Camilla now doing the same in Germany and France and William and Kate in America. Soft diplomacy, independence of political persuasion, and continuity are not to be sniffed at. I do feel as though I know more about them than any politician.

As for bowing and scraping... we're not in the 11th Century dear.

Vive la République

It was on the BBC news someone in the French crowd shouted out Vive le royauté quite clearly. A phrase not heard since the french revolution. Laughed my socks off!

quantumbutterfly · 24/09/2023 14:09

The french are welcome to them.

Novella4 · 24/09/2023 14:19

Attempts at justifying the Windsor grift by comparing them with other the remaining monarchies are just desperate .

NO other European country has a monarchy like ours. NO other European ‘royal’ ( no one is ‘royal’ it’s a lie) would even attempt to have a coronation ..
Charles Windsor insisted on a coronation that cost this failing country millions - look up the difference between a coronation and an inauguration.
Yes it’s easy to laugh at Charles and Camilla doddering up the aisle with their blood diamonds askew but the whole charade literally sets him above the population . We are given to him.He is above the law.
We serve him not the other way round .
Even that dirge of an anthem - save HIM and to hell with the rest of us.
Its not ‘pomp’ it’s not ancient - most of the theatrics were invented 100 years ago.
But I return again to Peter Ball, Mountbatten, Andrew and Epstein. How anyone other than the most misinformed or hard of thinking could claim to ‘admire ‘ that disgusting family is beyond me.

Novella4 · 24/09/2023 14:23

@colourwheelofortune

You are easily amused.
It is a self selected crowd. Of course there will be right wingers and god knows who else attracted to that event . It’s meaningless.

Though it is worth noting that more people went to the Notting Hill carnival than to the conanation ( yes I do call it that because that’s what it is designed to do )

I'm really not sure why I have to justify myself but here goes. Hope you enjoy my travelogue lol

Just about everyone speaks very good English. We're a bit lax with languages
It is very noticeable it is a sparsely populated country
The scenery is stunning. As it is in parts of the UK.
The men are very tall! But not as tall as Netherlands! This is not a criticism of us.
I loved the hygge style shops, wish we had more like this in UK. Just a passing comment not a criticism.
It is very very expensive compared to us

One big difference given Sunak's rowback on green issues... 80% of cars sold are EVs with a few hybrids. Petrol cars are nearly impossible to buy now. There are charging points literally everywhere. I had lots of conversations with Norwegians about it.... it works because their Govt lowered taxes on EVs, petrol cars are heavily taxed and I barely saw one.

We really need to get our act together over here...

That's it.

colourwheelofortune · 24/09/2023 14:47

@Novella4 Sadly I am very easily amused. As for the figures, yes more people turned out in person to watch the Notting Hill carnival, but it was spread over 2 days and was a spectator event. The kings coronation was viewed by approx 400 million people worldwide, in many countries. The actual crowds in the street numbered many thousands despite it pissing down. It was a bit of a crush on the Mall according to a friend who attended and rather scary. However there was basically nothing to see. Just a few carriages and a short balcony scene. To see anything you had to watch it on TV, which was not the case for the NHC.

Really comparing apples and pears is pointless.

Oh some good questions!
None of them with an easy answer.
I'll give it a go as I'm on a 9 hour train journey and need a distraction for the irritating woman telling 3veryone on the train about her date (he's just not that into you love we all want to say.)

  1. "How would you change the class system"
It would take centuries as it's so ingrained however as a starter I would get rid of inherited titles. Scrap the house of lords, get rid of private education, massively increase inheritance tax, build a lot more social housing integrated with private housing, make higher education free, massively improve care for people in the care system, create a basic income, outlaw nepotism, make being classism social unacceptable (we are beginning to do this with homophobia). Make it easier for people to choose jobs they want to do rather than those they are expected to (my siblings who are doctors/architects and would have been much happier as a painter and a carpenter) These are just a start and they won't stop my Mum sniffing at my husband using lounge instead of Sitting room, settee for sofa, toilet for loo or moan at my kids for speaking in our local accent but it make start making the class structures so imbedded. Fuck knows how we would fund it all.
smilesup · 24/09/2023 15:09

I'll think about the next bits on the next train

Roussette · 24/09/2023 15:46

no one is ‘royal’ it’s a lie

What do you mean by this? Do you imagine a designated "royal" has or is or claims to be something different?

It's a job, albeit an inherited one. It's like saying "there no such thing as a Civil Servant, or an Engineer."

Charles is doing the job of being King and representing the nation.
You do know he's also a human being, like the rest of us?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/09/2023 16:15

And yes, you are a subject, not a citizen. In 2023

Not since the end of 1982; at least, not unless we fit a small number of very narrow categories

And yes, I know some - incredibly - still end letters "Your Majesty's most humble and obedient subject", but even that's changed to "servant" at the end (which seems hardly any better TBH Hmm )

Do you a have a source for this please? I’ve read differently, so it would be nice see where these figures have come from.

Thanks in advance.
