They have hoodwinked people into thinking what they do is a 'public service' Much of what they do, other people do in their spare time. Actors and sports people are patrons of charities alongside having a job. As well as millions of volunteers. Going to sporting events and film premieres and asking inane questions of actors andcsports people isnt difficult ( and sometimes they cant even manage to do that politely!) They do charity work so that they can justify their existence. Even if they were ordinary aristocrats, one day they would have to sell a house to the National Trust or open it up to pay for their own roof repairs. They don't want to do that.

So agree with this. Great 'public service' to have two parents home like W&K, and 15 weeks or more holiday a year, whilst working very part time. Nice work if you can get it!

let's not pretend they are toiling away like the millions out there...

So agree with this. My DH's cousin runs a charity her daughter started as a kid! Her daughter sadly passed and now she runs a big organisation and both parents work full time and have 3 other kids, one of whom is special needs.
It's obscene to take millions from the tax payer for things ordinary people do voluntarily. I just find it so bizarre that anyone supports the current arrangement. I really do.

quantumbutterfly · 24/09/2023 12:14

I always find it infuriating when camilla says charles is a workaholic.

Release them into the wild.

I like having a monarchy although agree a slimmed down version is best, more like some of the other European monarchies.

smilesup · 24/09/2023 12:18

I don't understand people that lap up the bollocks. Honestly what is wrong with them? I hate all inherited title it perpetuates the ridiculous class system in this country.

I wonder why Macron invited C&C such useless people to a lavish state visit. Or the Germans. They're completely irrelevant nowadays.

Sparklybutold · 24/09/2023 12:35

Same as I did before. We should not have the RF.

People often say this but why would it have to be? Why not Floella Benjamin? Professor Brian Cox? Prof Jim Al-Khalili? Prof Dame Mary Beard?

A President would be a strong, presentable figurehead who represents the best of the nation and is intelligent enough to understand geo-politics and diplomacy. And a bit of etiquette.

They don't have to be a populist former politician. We are not the USA. Or indeed many other European countries.

We can forge our own path without a hereditary monarch as head of state.

Not to derail the thread but I’d vote in Brian Cox. There’s something very reassuring about him. Dara could be vice for a bit of levity and job’s done.

Not fussed about the monarchy although I liked the queen. If it was disbanded tomorrow I’d be a bit meh.

I read about the David Mitchell book. He said 'we have a monarchy instead of an identity' and I think he's right. It's hugely damaging as a nation. We aren't united at all.

quantumbutterfly · 24/09/2023 12:47

Have just ordered a copy of David Mitchell's book on the strength of that article @Roussette

I am still happy that we continue to have a monarchy. The element of "soft power" that they have is underestimated, and is of great value. The success of the recent state visit to France shows how important it is to have a non-political Head of State.
As people, whilst I have never met any of the current Royal Family, the King comes across as hard- working, sensitive and dutiful - whilst knowing that he is bound to be viewed unfavorably in comparison with his mother. Of course, I admired the late Queen, and she is missed. I think Queen Camilla is doing well in a job she clearly never wanted, and helps to keep the King on track. At a personal level, I think Camilla seems like great fun and I'd live to go out for a couple of G&Ts with her!

derxa · 24/09/2023 13:00

I'm watching Ed Davey on R4. His views on trans aside he seems like a decent person. We would end up with someone like him as president. If he did a state visit to France or Germany, the press would scarcely cover it. I love pomp and ceremony. Seems like Hugh Grant and Mick Jagger do too seeing as they were prancing about the Palace of Versailles this week.

King Charles and Queen Camilla’s state visit to France – in pictures

Charles and Camilla’s three-day state visit to France started on Wednesday with a ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and a dinner at the Palace of Versailles. They later visited a Paris flower market named after Queen Elizabeth II and then rejoin...

I am beyond puzzled whenever I read anyone saying... I'd love to have a G&T with Camilla, she seems such a laugh.

You don't know her. She might be an old shrew or a wonderful amusing person. All we know is what is spoonfed to us by the media, and remember how much her image was polished up by years of clever PR after Diana and all of that?
Surely you must realise that means we have absolutely no idea what she is like?!

Yes, she has manners. Yes, Charles married her but why we should be grateful for her keeping Charles on track, god alone knows. If he is not capable of keeping himself on track, given the help and wealth he has... he should not be Monarch. He's a 74 year old man FFS!

Malarandras · 24/09/2023 13:03

I admired and respected the Queen. I like Princess Anne as she seems to have dedication and a bit of spirit. The rest of them I’m not particularly fussed about.

Princess Anne also comes across as intelligent and pragmatic, I would vote for her as a representative of UK.

The petroleum industry accounts for around a quarter of the country's gross domestic product (GDP). On a per-capita basis, Norway is the world's largest producer of oil and natural gas outside of the Middle East. Easy to be a 'lovely country' when you have so many natural resources and only 5 million people

I'm not sure what point you are making to be honest

BadgerB · 24/09/2023 13:14

Why do people want to bow and scrape to them? It beggars belief.

Always thought this is a very odd phrase..... If introduced to Charles I might well give a small bow of the head.......But scrape what, potatos for his lunch? Finger-nails down a blackboard?
The opinion of some Republicans seems to be that the only reason others want to keep a monarchy is so that they may have a chance to humiliate themselves.

Can be no other reasons obviously
