I bounce between thinking I couldn’t care less to having quite strong opinions on the monarchy.
I’d prefer a heavily slimmed down version.
Charles looks less than regal in photo’s I’ve seen , he looks like someone who has wandered in off the street and how those coronation photos got approved is a wonder with the lob sided crown.
I can’t accept Camilla as queen.
I tend to skirt any news about the Royal Family now so probably my answer should be ‘meh’

I am still happy that we continue to have a monarchy. The element of "soft power" that they have is underestimated, and is of great value. The success of the recent state visit to France shows how important it is to have a non-political Head of State.
As people, whilst I have never met any of the current Royal Family, the King comes across as hard- working, sensitive and dutiful - whilst knowing that he is bound to be viewed unfavorably in comparison with his mother. Of course, I admired the late Queen, and she is missed. I think Queen Camilla is doing well in a job she clearly never wanted, and helps to keep the King on track. At a personal level, I think Camilla seems like great fun and I'd live to go out for a couple of G&Ts with her!

i agree

The tide’s been a turning since Edward v111, Diana , Andrew , Queen Elizabeth’s death yet ……. They are still here and crowds still greet them

Edward8 and even the Diana debacle took place in a far more deferential and less scrutinised age.

Of your more recent examples Andrew's caused immense damage to the image and in the process turned an unwelcome spotlight on their privilege.

The dust is yet to settle re. QE2 but there's a welcome increasing awareness of how she manipulated the system to royal advantage.

Do you? When she is "on duty" with Charles I think she looks as if she'd rather be at home, comfortable, with a book and a drink. She's even kept her own house - to escape from the Royals?

I agree. I don't think Camilla wants to be Queen. She always looks pretty reluctant to me. At the coronation I thought she looked absolutely horrified by the whole thing. I mean, it was just a bit of extra marital fun which always goes on in aristocratic circles and suddenly she's the queen....

Oh yes. I think I might have to get this book. A wry and amusing look at the Monarchy past and present. This is just a snippet from the book, worth a read.

I cannot believe we still have a Monarchy in 2023 reading that!

To escape from Charles more like!

Seperate homes when in the area.... him Highgrove, her in Wiltshire. I imagine her role was set in stone given the Diana years, she didn't have a lot of choice, Charles wouldn't have withstood another scandal in that area

Willmafrockfit · 25/09/2023 07:39

that books look great, that's exactly what i mean, the history is so interesting

everetting · 25/09/2023 07:46

Camilla looks exhausted in longer engagements. I don't think she is up to it. But in short engagements she looks like she is enjoying it.

quantumbutterfly · 25/09/2023 07:50

Yes, the weight of those tiaras must be very wearing.

ThreeBearsPorridge · 25/09/2023 07:50

Charles has aged hugely in the past year. He looks like he’s in his eighties. It’s quite painful seeing them both doddering around looking like they’d far rather be in the garden with their dogs. They just look like they are struggling. He has no charisma and she is just trying to ‘support’ him and probably wondering why she ever got in that situation. I can’t see what either of them contribute and their lifestyle is ridiculous.
William and Kate do their best but they just trot out platitudes and clearly hate it all too. Let them all off the hook and save us all a lot of money. It’s an outdated institution with no function in the modern world.

See, I think the opposite. I think they both looked very well in Paris. Better than they had for years.
I think William is much more like Harry than Royalists like to think. He wants to be king and have all the perks but doesn't want to do the work. I bet all of them would love to go back in time to when Kings were allowed to do more or less what they liked, without any bothersome deals with the press to get their secrets hidden away and having the public scrutinise their finances. That's what they don't like. Not the Kinging. They could easily say George will be the last king and allow a long, smooth transition away from the monarchy if they really didn't want it and they would still be loaded. What they want is all the bells and whistles. They will cling on with everything they have.

quantumbutterfly · 25/09/2023 08:17

They might be loaded but without the vast weight of the establishment behind them will they manage their wealth effectively. Without the perks of tweaking laws and taxes to their advantage.

Agree. And I think that's the kind of power they want. They know that without the titles they won't be able to do the ' my house to live in, your house when it needs to be repaired'. I can't imagine many aristos can afford to maintain 26 houses either.

upinaballoon · 25/09/2023 10:33

They just look as if they are struggling?? C and C? They don't look to me as if they're struggling.
I certainly don't think that Camilla ever set out with a notion to be queen.
Events did just roll on. (Events, dear boy, events.) After his divorce Charles apparently said that his relationship with her was non-negotiable. The steps of her being accepted and married were made gently and steadily.
She seems to be accepted far better than she was 25 years ago. I think that is for a variety of reasons, not least her own behaviour. Schtum. ( I don't know how to spell it!)
It is in the interests of republicans to keep this drip, drip, drip of "He looks worn out, she looks confused, they aren't up to it really". Drip, drip, drip, propaganda, tugging the forelock to The Guardian.

Novella4 · 25/09/2023 13:41

What a revealing post

Disdain for the Guardian is predictable - they uncover uncomfortable facts but I doubt you’d read the article

And the best hangers on keep their mouths shut . Of course that what the ‘royals ‘ need . God forbid that the remaining supporters know the truth .

Katypp · 25/09/2023 14:05

Although I wish them no harm, I would get rid of the whole lot of them with no hesitation. Charles is pretty ineffective and the next generation are not much better. Kate is it much more than a suburban stay at home mum, but with no money worries whatsoever. William just likes to tell us what we should be doing. Their PR is doing a fantastic job - even when they acquired ANOTHER home it was sold as an indication how ordinary they were as it was 'just' four bedrooms - in addition to the other homes they have! Madness.

Do they trot out platitudes? Have you spoken to them? Clips I've seen people seem to be quite entertained with their chat. Of course the "audience" could be good actors...?

outdated institution with no function in the modern world.
C&C seemed to function well in Paris judging by the crowds. (tho' Charles's French made me cringe for him - why can't toffs do any accent except their own?)

Course they're entertained! They love love love the RF, they're hardly going to wheel out a Republican are they?!

No different to those who camp out at 6am to catch the RF going to Church.

No they're not, Roussette ... if the event's of sufficient significance they arrest those instead Hmm

Ah yes the Coren-Mitchells. Two of the biggest snobs in the UK. Victoria's brother Giles excepted. Remember his revelations about the Turnip Toffs?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giles_Coren
Here is a waspish article about W&K by Coren's wife Esther Walker (whose sister is married to Alexander Armstrong)

They're all obsessed with royalty.
