😁My theory is that only connect is a recruiting tool for the security services. I think when they get a particularly canny one they get taken aside in the green room for a little chat.

😂 love it!

My DH has the type of brain to nearly always 'get it'

Me not so 😅😜

I do too but Victoria's smugness is often a bit much. She often pretends to like things like naff pop music and darts but I'm not buying it. 😂

William and Kate do their best but they just trot out platitudes and clearly hate it all too. Let them all off the hook and save us all a lot of money. It’s an outdated institution with no function in the modern world.

Do they trot out platitudes? Have you spoken to them? Clips I've seen people seem to be quite entertained with their chat. Of course the "audience" could be good actors...?

C&C seemed to function well in Paris judging by the crowds. (tho' Charles's French made me cringe for him - why can't toffs do any accent except their own?)

At least he speaks another language…well. British peoples French accent unless they have significant experience of living in France is woeful. And visa versa really. He did well. And he will be the last as William does not speak another language. The Queen spoke French fluentishly (I don’t believe you are fluent unless you are probably bilingual as in having one or two home languages growing up and educated in another). Obviously Philip spoke German and French.

Willmafrockfit · 26/09/2023 06:07

Charles also spoke German when he went to Germany

Expensive education not wasted then. Jolly good.

I mean, he lived in Wales for a few years, and it was hardly the surprise of the century that he would be Prince of Wales. He should have learnt at least Welsh. He has a lot of spare time, and could have done it and still had time to pick the kids up. They really are lazy even compared to the rest of the RF.

A year ago he was pleased he had learnt the Welsh word for 'cup of tea' and knew what bara brith was.

Gosh! I think he needs a new Welsh teacher, get rid of the old one!

Give Charles his due he spent two months at Aberystwyth Uni learning Welsh and learning about the history before his Investiture.
William showing no signs of taking it as seriously as his Dad.

everetting · 26/09/2023 11:07

Camilla wanted to be Queen and for her relatives to play a significant part in the coronation.

I honestly don't know why people want Charles to abdicate in fsvour of William. Firstly it shows they don't really know what the RF is, and secondly, do they really think he's done enough to be given that role? He has hugely underachieved even when it comes to Royalling. Is it just ageism?

Roussette · 26/09/2023 11:59

Nah. They want pretty dresses worn by someone who can look fab in them, and the children to be ooohed and aaaahed over

BadgerB · 26/09/2023 12:38

The usual "William is lazy" posts.
Unless the Wales are out on public display some assume they are sitting at home being waited on.

Roussette · 26/09/2023 12:41

Gosh, they're not?! 😮

quantumbutterfly · 26/09/2023 13:50

Maybe they're out and about being waited on.

DewinDwl · 26/09/2023 15:04

To be fair to Charles his Welsh is pretty fluent and natural. The last time he spoke at the Welsh Parliament (assembly? I dk) he sounded way better than he did in French a few days ago. Yes I speak both languages.

Apart from that looling back I remember that just over a year ago we had...

Talk of a slimmed down monarchy
Reassurances that Camilla would never be queen
Etc

Anyway. I would say my mood about the monarchy is disappointed bordering on impatient now.

Reassurances that Camilla would never be queen

When was this?
Originally she was supposed to be Princess not Queen , but I thought the late Queen changed her mind and said she wished Camilla to be Queen "when the time came".

upinaballoon · 26/09/2023 15:47

If Charles were to be fluent in Welsh, German and French, say, how much time do you think he would need to read and practise each week to keep them all good?
Edit to say I'd be easier in French after a week than I would be on day one over the Channel.

Edited

I learnt French at school. I hated it, and still hate it. However, after a few hours in France I can get by asking directions/ buying something in a shop and ordering in a restaurant. You don't really need to constantly keep them up. As with all learning, once something is learnt, its somewhere in your brain waiting to come out. Just before a visit a few refresher lessons would be enough. They have the time.

The usual "William is lazy" posts.

What are they doing? They have 60 staff to look after less than 300 engagements a year between the two of them, some of which will be phonecalls. Either they are doing all the background reading and the research and the work ( in which case 60 staff is excessive) or the staff are doing it all and they are reading a briefing paper half an hour before and turning up. How do the other Royals manage so much more?

Roussette · 26/09/2023 16:08

It is odd that they need so many staff. How on earth does Anne manage given she does more engagements?

As usual it's all smoke and mirrors... "A breakdown of the roles of their staff is not detailed"

Course it isn't!

MotherOfCatBoy · 26/09/2023 17:45

“I don’t remember voting for you”
”That’s not how it works”

That’s the problem, right there.

Serenster · 26/09/2023 18:01

It is odd that they need so many staff. How on earth does Anne manage given she does more engagements?

Because Anne’s work is handled by the Buckingham Palace team for all the “pay and rations” stuff. She will clearly have assistants (likely a Private Secretary and Assistant PS and an admin strati e assistant or possibly two) to deal with organising her commitments/diary/travel arrangements/correspondence etc but Anne herself is not dealing with their payroll, expenses, HR needs, nor her own communication needs or social media. All of that gets picked up by the Buckingham Palace team.

The Wales have their own household, so they need to also do all that work for their staff. Plus finance, IT, operations - all that “stuff” that needs to be done and takes a surprisingly large number of people to manage for an organisation of any size.

(Our household are big fans of Only Connect too)

CathyorClaire · 26/09/2023 19:52

William showing no signs of taking it as seriously as his Dad.

Exactly.

And given he's 'inherited' a massive estate there, you'd think he might show a bit of willing.

That said it was bought for Charles by the Duchy of Cornwall (nothing untoward there, natch just like the Highgrove sleight of hand) and Willy now plans to let it out for holidays. Charles is faced with having to pay Willy rent when he wants it and is apparently unamused by the prospect 😁

AuroraCake · 26/09/2023 20:28

William doesn’t speak any languages. None of the Queens Grandchildren do. Many many British people speak enough French to get by…as a previous poster said to be okay in shops and restaurants. Many are actually pretty confident. Philip was given he spoke it when he lived there and I presume his German was good. I have no idea what their home language was growing up. The Queen spoke exp
cellent French and her and Phillip often spoke it among themselves. Charles really tries you have to give him that and he is eager to improve himself and be able to speak to people in their language etc. Could be a generation thing with William. I speak okay French and Spanish but none of my friends speak any languages except for a friend who lived in French for a number of years and is fairly fluent.
