The trailer for 'Heart of Invictus" has been released by Netflix, and it looks incredible, and so moving.

@Angrycat2768 that poster literally is not engaging in a good faith discussion on this thread about the documentary and the upcoming games - I wouldn’t bother.

Some friendly advice: Please ignore the negativity and detractors. It’s all so tiresome and repetitive. It’s time for everyone to move on.

Let’s focus on Harry’s accomplishments and the veterans who are deserving of our attention and support.

I’m absolutely looking forward to the Invictus documentary and the games in September!

In the spirit of these games and respect for our veterans, let’s try to use the rest of this thread for positivity and awareness only.

Thank you.

You are so right.

Here is Invictus announcement

Why do you keep talking about Harry becoming King then?
Very different to Andrew, whatever you might think.

You are deliberately trying to stir up hate. It's not pleasant and we see it.

And it's not working.

it was in response to a previous poster. Also, Andrew is worse I agree but Harry would definitely be a disaster if ever the worst case scenario happens. That would probably signal the start of an actual republican movement if that were to be the case.

I guess you must have missed out on the other posters from the previous pages who also weren’t just focused on discussing the games and documentary. I responded to a previous post on this thread that had nothing to do with this topic.

@MissElinorDashwood thanks for the link. Such a great organisation/initiative.

Also love your name.

You’re welcome. I agree it’s a fantastic organisation and it’s going from strength to strength. There have been some great announcements in recent months, highlighting its expansion and success.

My first choice was MissAnneElliot but it’s unavailable ☺️

The discussion here around intelligence and connecting it to university education is elitist, classist prejudice and actually an argument that lacks intelligence itself. Plenty of people with degrees lack intelligence, plenty of people without are highly intelligent.

Once again I am insulted and disgusted by the comments regarding mental health and trauma and it shows how much work we have to do to end this nonsense stigma that deems people who have battled mental illness unworthy of respect, incapable of functioning as an adult, and somehow defective. It is disgusting. Half the population suffers anxiety, so anyone using it to have a go at Harry is insulting half the posters here. It is a damaging conversation to have anywhere and I think it is even worse that it occurs on a thread about Invictus, its almost as if the posters haven't listened to a single athlete or participants story, every one of them have overcome trauma and challenges around mental health. How disgusting to come here and make those remarks.

Can this thread please stop making these kinds of remarks about mental illness? It really is low to do here, or anywhere.

Excellent post and what an insult to the many veterans who also suffer PTSD and poor mental health. How ironic to criticise Harry for having struggles when he is helping veterans with similar problems and this whole thread is supposed to be about the Invictus Games, but no let's use it to bash Harry over and over again. ConfusedConfused It's disgraceful.

Angrycat2768 · 28/08/2023 10:56

I wasn't going to bother watching but I think I will 😄 The thing is, all the adverse criticism levelled at Harry and all the people watching it to pick holes ( including press) will give it bumper viewing figures! If people who say they don't want to hear from them stopped doing Google searches for their names or obsessively poring over every single thing printed about them, they would go away because there would be no inerest in them. But they can't help themselves!

PrincessTigger · 28/08/2023 11:00

I do think there is a valid point to be made in there somewhere. There are problematic people who hide behind mental health-style vernacular to bully or harass people in a way it feels like you can’t criticise them for. Good therapy is not just good for yourself, it’s good for everyone around you. If Harry exhibits Behaviour A and says this is because of Trauma B, that doesn’t necessarily mean that A is a good behaviour that doesn’t hurt anyone and can’t be criticised.

I also think he has misunderstood a few concepts in therapy! In CBT/CPT sometimes (if you have a good therapist and enough sessions!) you start by talking about significant events from your past that help you understand how your core beliefs and rules for living came to exist. Harry talks about it like that history is evidence for his core beliefs though (whereas the next step in therapy would be to find examples which break his rules) - that History A caused him to act out Behaviour B 30 years later. That’s not really the point though. The objective of therapy is not to have another go at winning every argument you’ve ever been involved in, that’s not healthy.

I also think there’s a real discrepancy between how MH is talked about. On one hand you always hear “we need to talk more about MH, we need to talk more about men’s MH” over and over again. On the other hand we also (with the best intentions) say that people should have a tolerance of some very destructive behaviours that may ultimately impact their own MH. So through the gap you have some very dodgy people, usually men (see custody battles, abusive relationships, “sex addicts”, etc) wrapping up excuses in some twisted therapy-sounding language that is not actually therapy but makes their victim believe they can’t even object.

I don’t know what the answer is unfortunately. I just wanted to say it’s not as black & white as some seem to think, and we should keep an open mind.

I’m growing a little tired of the policing. You share this space with other people. We have different life experiences. I’m not going to stop talking about a very personal subject because someone is always going to have an issue with it.

You do it too, when theres a sensitive issue thats affected you and peoples prejudices pop up. So I shall continue to call out people who are either derailing the thread or who think its appropriate to malign people for struggling with mental health. Attacking someone for how you think, with your limited knowledge of the situation, that they are dealing with their mental health, is horrible. It has been discussed in a disparaging way on this thread already and its harmful to do that. If you want to keep triggering people by dissecting how someone else you don't know deals with their PTSD, go for it. This thread is meant to be about the games and all the athletes, many of whom haven't talked about their struggles early enough because of attitudes like yours and other posters. Judging how someone else deals with their trauma, especially when trauma responses aren't always controllable, is low to me. its not the thread for it.

Announcement/Update

High-ranking visitors to the “aktuelle sportstudio”: Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex Founding Patron of the Invictus Games Foundation and Federal Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius will be guests on Saturday, September 9, 2023, from 11 p.m. at ZDF’s “aktuelle sportstudio” in Mainz. Together with three participants of the “Invictus Games”, the panel with Kathrin Müller-Hohenstein and Sven Voss will discuss the international sports competition for wounded, injured and sick service personnel.

Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, founded the Invictus Games in 2014. Through the power of sport, the Invictus Games supports the recovery and rehabilitation of participating servicewomen and men, while promoting a broader understanding and respect for them.

This year, for the first time, the games will take place in Germany from September 9th to 16th, in Düsseldorf. After the official Opening Ceremony, The Duke of Sussex and the German Federal Minister of Defense will be guests on “aktuelle sportstudio”. Two Afghanistan veterans and Invictus Games competitors will join. American Angelo Anderson suffered complicated gunshot wounds to the arm and thigh during his deployment. He was at the first games in London in 2014 and now works for the Invictus Games Foundation. The German Jens Niemeyer suffered a post-traumatic stress injury during his deployment in Afghanistan. He competes for Germany at the Invictus Games and visits the “aktuelle sportstudio” together with his wife Nicole.

The “aktuelle sportstudio” starts at 11 p.m. and is moderated by Kathrin Müller-Hohenstein and Sven Voss.

The show is offered with subtitles.

I love table tennis too! We were a big family, and would put a net up on the kitchen table. I'm not good at it, but sometimes I would blast a shot, and think I was 🤣

I hope William does the right thing and reverses this decision in the future.

The Monarch does not have the power to remove titles as per current UK law and therefore hoping is really pointless. A Private Member’s Bill has been put forth to allow for this. Unfortunately the second reading will be on a day the House will not be sitting but will not be expected to go forward. I think for people who want to strip the Sussex branch of titles - petitioning the government to strip them of their titles is how to get it done as opposed to appealing to the Monarch. So if the Bill doesn’t go through in November - perhaps getting a few MPs to get another Bill on the table is the way.

https://bills.parliament.uk/bills/3289/news

That Bill was put forwards my one of the MPs for York.

I doubt the Sussexes were a consideration at all

Back to the Games - as Harry was one of the key players in moving the US Warrior Games concept into different countries, of course it's fine for him to be there and even to speak. But he really isn't involved much directly now, so I don't think he has a role now other than a bit of glad-handing.

I hope the rumours of Meghan speaking/hosting are wrong, as she doesn't have a role (it would be like Tim Lawrence speaking at an Olympic event - fine for him to be there as Princess Anne's +1, but not to have a role)

Yes let's ignore harry’s foibles and white wash his racist behaviour because of this upcoming documentary and games (the games he got by virtue of being a royal). Why, him saying that he saw the taliban as nothing more than chess pieces, compared killing to a video game, and then called someone a pki and rhead, oh and him getting special treatment by skipping a drug test, why it's all merely a misunderstanding and harry really truly is the hero/saviour that the veterans look up to. 🙄

TEAM UK

59 competitors have been selected to represent Team UK at the Invictus Games Düsseldorf 2023 in September.
The team is made up of veterans and currently serving personnel from the British Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force. And in Düsseldorf they will be competing across 10 sports including athletics, swimming, wheelchair rugby, and powerlifting.

UK TEAM CAPTAIN:

“A few years ago, I couldn’t go to the park with my kids, so I want to show them what I’m able to achieve now."

Lieutenant Commander James Rogers has been selected as Team UK captain and is returning for his second Invictus Games after competing in cycling and swimming 2022.

A serving member of the Royal Navy, James lives with ankylosing spondylitis, a long-term autoimmune inflammatory arthritis condition which affects his mobility, causing full-body pain and chronic fatigue.

"Representing my country, and the Armed Forces, and to top it all off, being selected as team captain, is an absolute honour and privilege."

Really inspirational. These vets who have been through the mill, risen above it are a testament to the power of positive mental attitude. Nowadays when some seem to wallow, complain, blame and live with bitterness and resentment it really is great to see.

An inspiration to us all let's hope some of it rubs off on Haz.

I think she spoke last time unless I’m misremembering?

She did. And I don’t think it’s at all inappropriate - it’s Harry’s project, but she is Harry’s wife. And she is a very confident public speaker. It makes perfect sense to utilise both halves of a power couple when they want the event to get maximum publicity and for the attendees to feel special.

Kate gave an award at Earthshot too. I think it’s fine. A spouse is an easy booking 😆
