The trailer for 'Heart of Invictus" has been released by Netflix, and it looks incredible, and so moving.

For those interested, please find it here.

As a surprise to nobody, the documentary is a flop:
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12473127/Prince-Harrys-Invictus-Games-documentary-flops-fails-hit-Netflixs-10-streaming-chart-UK.html

I think it's well made for the concept but the topic is very niche and has no mainstream appeal outside of the Commonwealth. If you asked any random person on the street in Europe or Asia, they would have absolutely no idea what Invictus is. There has been zero press or hype about this year's games, which, ironically, are being held in Germany. Celebrating war veterans is a very controversial topic in central Europe so the media are deliberately keeping it out of the spotlight.

Netflix hasn't released the weekly top 10 for this week yet, if they mean the daily ratings then no it's not surprising people would rather consume a shallow reality show, peppa pig and a range of run of the mill dramas than a programme about veterans- injured veterans about that. The British public generally don't care about them so not surprised they wouldn't be that bothered about watching it. I suppose in terms of ther contract with netflix ratings are important, but plenty of interesting and worthwhile content doesn't top any sort of charts, doesn't make it a failure. Unless you're making this about Harry again and couldn't care less it's about the veterans.

What?

Iwantcakeeveryday · 02/09/2023 15:04

I can;t see Netflix daily ratings, the only sites that do that aren't affiliated with Netflix and they don't post where they get their figures from

MissElinorDashwood · 02/09/2023 15:09

I’m seeing a lot of public support and hyping of teams in various countries.

If you’re referring to the UK, then yes, I’m seeing next to nothing.
There’s some by on social media but that’s about it.

PrincessTigger · 02/09/2023 15:27

I think when the actual ratings come out it will have done quite well for what it is

And all the people working tirelessly to raise money, to rehabilitate, to work with addiction and homelessness are literally stunned.

How does not watching a documentary equate to not caring about something? How incredibly patronising

It's not patronising, its acknowledging the truth that if viewing figures weren't great it's not a surprise as on a population level generally people don't give a crap, which they don't as support for iniatives that support veterans don't get much support. I didn't say that people who didn't watch didn't care at all, but that tonnes of people don't care and so are less likely to watch it. Its odd though for people who do claim to care to be happy it's not done well because Harry is in it, anything that draws attention and hopefully inspires people to support veterans is surely good.

BasiliskStare · 02/09/2023 18:01

I hope I am right here but the games will be covered on BBC1 and iPlayer - so quite different from the documentary & I suspect will be well watched. Wheelchair Rugby - a friend of mine's son played- is amazing to watch. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001qkqb#:~:text=Live%20coverage%20from%20Dusseldorf%20in,rugby%20competition%20will%20take%20place.

One can criticise Harry and yet be very excited to watch the Invictus games.

BBC One - Invictus Games, 2023: Red Button, Invictus Games 2023: Athletics and Wheelchair Rugby

Live coverage from Dusseldorf of the first day of competition at the Invictus Games.

Well not necessarily. I wouldn’t be that bothered about watching a documentary on something that has been going for a while and that has had documentaries made about it before which I have seen. I will, however be watching the games I don’t think there is any link between low viewer figures and the general population not giving a crap about veterans. Would the fact that the figures are low for a documentary on another subject mean that no one gave a crap about that either? Or just that people didn’t want to watch that particular documentary?

There is a bit of a dearth of new content at the moment, because of the US strikes.

This should be a really good time to get higher than otherwise expected figures

Celebrating war veterans is a very controversial topic in central Europe so the media are deliberately keeping it out of the spotlight.

What?

Do you know anything about history? WWI? WWII?

As a result of this, countries like Germany, Austria or Italy never actively celebrate military service. People who work in the military are respected for their jobs but there are never any public fanfare or mainstream accolades for veterans the same way there is in the USA or UK. There is an unspoken agreement with the media as well, who do not promote the concept of "fighting and serving for your country". A military career is esteemed but treated very discreetly.

Big swathes of Europe are increasingly pacifist (Scandinavia & co) so the whole idea of war and veterans is just not a thing. This not disparaging the stories and lives of people who are celebrated in Invictus but simply a fact that culturally, the concept behind Invictus does not resonate in many countries.

Harry is already resetting the game….for his own children (and for Charlotte and Louis by extension). George will be protected in the same way that William was. He’ll be fine, I hope.

Harry was ripped to shreds for saying this in an interview he did for his book. I don't believe anything will be different for Charlotte and Louis because the Royals dont want it to be. The model is that the Monarch and the heir get the money, and that money gets handed to the other family members. Therefore, the job of the others is to protect the main people in return. They have to stick this out in return for the houses and to remain on the payroll. If anything, Harry will be an example of what happens when you turn on the family. Hang out with paedophiles? Fine, as long as you dont badmouth us or do anything to rock the boat, give. Do what Harry did snd then tell everyone about it, and you're out. George, Charlotte and Louis are already being labelled by the press yet they still get wheeled out whenever their parents want some good press

Yes, but as you can appreciate, it’s a very delicate subject in Germany. (My son studies German at school and they looked into this - this BBC article is a pretty good summary of a complex subject. Interestingly in the UK and certainly the US the national services tend ore towards the Hitlerian “Celebration of Heroes” that Germany has grappled with, and moved away from).

The Original article is from the US - Newsweek.

It's not come up as a trending or suggested viewing for me on my NF profile, which I was surprised at as the H&M doc was heavily promoted and top of trending almost immediately.

Be interesting to see the viewing figures - but I'm always suspicious now about how NF manipulate their figures.

Prince Harry's Netflix show flops with audiences

While 'Heart of Invictus' has proved a hit with critics, the show has failed so far to break into the Netflix Top 10 charts in either the U.K. or the U.S.

I did think it was strange how I had to really search for it. That said, One Piece also came out which is a big budget thing so I guess that takes priority?

Iwantcakeeveryday · 02/09/2023 21:02

Where does Newsweek get the figures though?

MissElinorDashwood · 02/09/2023 21:02

Oh dear. Newsweek doesn’t make it any more credible. I won’t be clicking on that article either.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 02/09/2023 21:06

Well I did and there is no evidence or source for that headline. It says it failed to show up on the chart Netflix released the next day. Netflix only release the top 10 for the week previous, which as I said, on their website it is august 21-27.
