The trailer for 'Heart of Invictus" has been released by Netflix, and it looks incredible, and so moving.

Just that Netflix has a far reach.

Edited

Odd comment. I lived there for years. Yes they have satellite and all kinds of TV.

Nothing odd about it. I’m fully aware, thank you.
My sister’s family lives out there and I visit often.

My point is that it’s far reaching which can only be a good thing for the Invictus Games, its future growth and will ultimately benefit more veterans.

I should have said in the original post. I have a habit of assuming people can read my thoughts.

Are the beginnings and end of this not the opposite of it each other?

The funeral was a show of mass hysteria of which all who took part in should be ashamed.

and yet

Grief is subjective to the person feeling it.

Surely you can see the difference between the manufactured grief for someone famous that you don't personally know and have never met and the personal loss of a mother or sister or daughter that has a profound and far reaching effect on you? The first is the former the last is the latter. I was upset when Kurt Cobain died. I didn't fly to America and tell his daughter how upset I was about it!

Here is a list of all competing Nations. 24.
Interesting to read about Team Unconquered. It's something that started at the beginning and has carried on. It's about bringing some nations together in one team.
Having watched bits before, I can't remember seeing them but will watch out for them.

Anyway, back to Invictus, I think the documentary shows how you can move on from trauma and I think Harry understands this

I don't think it shows that at all, I'm not sure anyone moves on from trauma whether in IG or irl. It shows that people learn to live with it, learn how to process it. Learn the new them.

Granted I've only seen the first one but I've seen strong people often feeling weak and finding strategies to manage that.

I was very upset when Diana died. I didn't go into London and wail or lay flowers but I was upset. Of course it's different to grief for a close relative. Do you also condemn Meghan when she went to Uvalde

Harry though himself says that it was not Afghanistan that wounded him. It was his childhood of losing his mother. To say that is a "wounded soldier" is a bit of a slight on soldiers who were really wounded by the war.

Gabe, a veteran who lost his arm from a motorbike accident shares a lot about his childhood trauma. One of the vets from Canada says he finds it hard to hug people because he was never hugged. Another talks about wanting to be a better parent than his parents were. None of the Danish Veterans had physical wounds but all had mental wounds.

There was a point made in the documentary that those with childhood trauma are candidates for ptsd. Sometimes it’s the totality of years of negative experiences , not one incident.

I still haven't started the doc, but I can say this is me right now. I have never been in war. My PTSD is caused by childhood drama combined with an increase in emotional abuse the last few years. When one grows up in an emotionally abusive household, you learn that behavior as normal. But it is not. It also carries over to your adulthood unknowingly.

I have had therapy several times in my life and I still have developed PTSD years after the trauma.

I am so flicking tired of posters in here beating Harry with the "getting help" stick. He probably did get help back then. It may have been the wrong type of help. It may have not been enough help. Or it may have been similar to me, where you thought you dealt with it but it comes back up later. I can't tell you how many times I have heard "I don't know why you can't leave it in the past". Well I thought I did, thanks.

It amuses me that the same people (in general) bitch about Harry taking away from the vets are the same people who mention Harry in every post and want to comb through every mistake he has ever made in order to, what? Prove thier viewpoint?

I have other opinions but am making the smart decision not to continue here. I was looking forward to a nice discussion about the vets but I knew it would never happen on MN. Not really.

Roussette · 31/08/2023 17:06

@onlylarkin

Please don't go, you have a lot to say that is relevant.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 31/08/2023 17:12

@onlylarkin 💐 I totally understand where you're coming from.

I know its frustrating but try and look past the posts not about the programme and the vets and just engage with those that are :) I'm really glad we'll be able to watch some of it on BBC but quickly read through what they're showing and its not the archery which Taira is in :(

onlylarkin · 31/08/2023 17:12

I'll be back. I am.acutally headed to a nice quiet long weekend camping (well glamping, I am told old to sleep in a tent). I am actually going to download the series to my tablet and watch it without all the negative commentary.

If I say anything else right now, I will be banned to be frank. I am not going to allow negative people to get me worked up, especially when I question the sincerity of some posters.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 31/08/2023 17:14

Actually remembered they do multiple events and I think she might be in a team sport one so perhaps we can see Yuliia /Taira still.

You know it's no bad thing protecting yourself from the stuff online, to limit the negativity we read, its not good to take in too much of it so take breaks when needed :) I think you'll enjoy the series away from any unnecessary noise. There is so much good stuff in it thats worth absorbing. I also recommend the series on the blue zones! I was watching last night about the effects of stress on the body.

onlylarkin · 31/08/2023 17:22

Thanks for that recommendation. I will look it up.

MissElinorDashwood · 31/08/2023 17:23

@onlylarkin 💐❤️ a big hug to you also.

I understand your frustrations & annoyance. There’s so much I’d like to share and discuss but unfortunately there is a lack of empathy and consideration in this thread. It’s such a shame.

I was thinking about you when I was watching the series yesterday. It would have been nice to discuss some topics with you but I completely understand why you feel uncomfortable doing that here.

No because calmly going to a memorial to lay flowers one thing, crying hysterically when two bereaved children have been forced to look at those flowers, surrounded by hundreds of other hysterically crying people is quite another. It's the same as when Kate went to the Sarah Everard memorial. I did have a problem with the police waiting until she had left before arresting women for having a vigil.

derxa · 31/08/2023 18:22

I remember the newsreader Dermot Murnaghan weeping on air. It was a natural human response to the tragic death of a young woman who had been well loved by the public. I think people were taken by surprise by the strength of their feelings

mrsmingleton · 31/08/2023 19:42

Yet again we have the concept put forward on here of "negative people" to mean the ones who do not agree with certain posters. In fact that is then taken a step further as being described as "insincere". I wouldn't describe avid supporters of Harry as "negative people" so why the other way ? Everyone is entitled to their opinion on Harry and yes that will vary.

I don't think I have read anyone on here saying that the Invictus games are a bad thing. Yes, some have discussed the idea that Harry has brought over to it some of the "issues" that his previous revelations have made known - he said this before, then he said this and that this may well put some viewers off. I read the comments below a You Tube link ( not the one I posted) and so many Americans saying that the fact that he was involved would mean they would not watch. It is a shame that people think like this but then it is understandable too especially in the USA where " military" carries a special significance for many.

Janiie · 31/08/2023 19:47

'He probably did get help back then. It may have been the wrong type of help. It may have not been enough help'

What he said was he 'didn't get any support'. I'd presume massively hurtful to his db and df whom he previously said were a great support and pointed him in the right direction professional help wise.

I do have empathy for those triggered by discussion on here. Like many families we've had extreme challenges to deal with, no one comes through life unscathed. What I wouldn't do however is say years later no one supported me in my darkest days if they infact tried. Whether their support helped is of course always a different matter and I believe that is probably Harry's point. Perhaps no one could help him, it wasn't that they didn't try.

He should have left such ambiguous comments out to have left the focus solely where it should have been.

onlylarkin · 31/08/2023 19:47

I never said people who don't like Harry are negative. I said certain posters are negative and seem insincere. That is my opinion and I am entitled to it. I believe it 100% there are posters here who are only here to stir the pot. Again, my opinion and I am entitled to it. I can't speak for everyone, but I fully believe I am not the only one who thinks this way.

Just because a person can do something, doesn't mean they should.
