I came across some old threads in other forums and also articles where Catherine was being criticized for being lazy, dumb, overrated, a gold digger and called all sorts of names. There were even threads that questioned why people disliked her so much, and multiple pages of replies stating why she was so disliked. I am wondering why this seems to have now been forgotten, even if Meghan became the new media target, why is it hardly mentioned the amount of hate and vitriol that Catherine went through?

I wish they would just go and live a happy life with their children instead of rehashing every petty family squabble, but it's not like they've killed somebody!

And that's the point - the last time anybody heard from Harry was during his testimony now almost 2 months ago. He did not rehash any family squabble. The last we heard from Meghan was the night of her award a month before that - again no rehash. So it begs the question - why do you think they are not really living a happy life?

PrincessTigger · 26/07/2023 16:46

Being critical of something someone does (which we should all be) obviously doesn’t mean you endorse the most extreme negative views about that person. I notice that people who criticise other members of the royal family don’t feel the need to spell out that e.g. while they think Kate’s early years campaign is a little lacking in substance obviously they condemn people who want to kill her and set her on fire. It would look very odd!

For clarity, in future please assume my views are limited to what I have expressed, and not an endorsement of every single view I have not happened to distance myself from.

Surely the biggest difference between the treatment of Kate and Meghan is the rise of social media in the decade separating their arrival in the royal family? Kate got a lot of shit from the press which the Meghan superfans are unaware of, but it wasn't backed up by unhinged loons on Twitter. She chose not to engage with the criticism and got on with being a textbook royal duchess and great mum through 3 very difficult pregnancies. That's why she's now adored.
Meghan had the misfortune to join the royal family when every troll and bot on the internet now had an outlet to air their opinion, and she and Harry clearly look at SM way way way too much (presumably her past as an IG influencer has her too tuned into it). It's not that Britain and all the British media is horribly racist, it's that the crazed rantings of a few idiots somehow became characterised as What Britain Thinks. There were so many media pieces celebrating what their marriage might mean and being really optimistic about their future role. So many! All that happiness around their wedding! They threw away that goodwill by their own actions, unhelpfully informed by paranoia because they weren't protected from the worst of the online nuttery by their teams.

But the true question is, how do you protect people from online abuse? Maybe partial censorship could be the solution.

Cyberbullying is an epidemic and we're seeing more and more cases of children committing suicide due to online bullying.

Big tech companies definitely should and have to do more to tackle this problem

Because hearing from them every few months is too much for me. Maybe they are having a happy life - then it's even more annoying that they feel the need to dumping all their unhappiness on the public who we're going through Covid and then the cost of living crises. I don't hate them. I just wish they would read the room!

escapingthecity · 26/07/2023 17:06

@Nono22972 it's a really good question and I don't know how we stop online bullying. The changes Elon Musk is making to Twitter make it more, not less, likely that it will be used as a channel for bullying. Unless decent people all leave and leave it to sink into the cesspit. But then the trolls will all move over to Threads/Mastodon etc as well.
Someone will always suggest posting under real names - but on MN we see every day the kinds of sensitive and desperate things women would never ask for help in if we had to use our real names here.
Perhaps helping people to protect themselves by deleting the apps/limiting their use is something we can teach our children to do.
Slightly derailing the topic - though Kate supported an anti bullying campaign didn't she?

It is horrible I lost a good friend last year after an online bullying campaign ☹️

Tech companies are not trying hard enough…

I don't understand. Because Meghan hasn't put out statements or courted publicity in months so what is she doing that is so annoying? (She went to a farmers' market shock horror!)

And the 'every few months' is down to british media.

What are you getting at? I went off them when they started putting out statements about their 'mission to spread compassion around the world', going on Oprah whining about some row over bridesmaids' dresses and publishing books complaining about their siblings. They'd have to go quiet for about ten years if they want my popularity vote again.

I thought it was just me - literally Meghan has not "dumped any unhappiness" now in about 6 months. She spoke at an award ceremony. Harry has not either - he has spoken in court about the press and nowhere else. How does her speaking at an awards ceremony and him taking a media company to task have anything to do with the cost of living crisis? Guess we'll never know.

I'm not getting at anything. Didn't realise they had to disappear for ten years.

This is where I am too. I’ve found these royal threads very difficult because I feel as though anyone who is critical of an action of the Sussexes - for example I have very negative views about some of their actions the ‘catastrophic car chase’ incident and accompanying statement released by them, the Uvalde visit and the Oprah interview - is lumped in with those with some very extreme views and conspiracy theories - kids not being real, or being born from a surrogate etc.

I’m a fan of Kate’s mostly but I can see and accept valid criticism of her - no one is perfect.

But it’s rare to find that balance in die-hard Sussex fans.

Howsimplywonderful · 26/07/2023 18:11

@wordler

You’ve summed it up really well there

Harry and Meghan mostly stay out of the media. After the book, we've barely seen them these since January. The people complaining that H&M are talking and complaining all the time are definitely those who seek out news about Meghan like watching GB news and ridiculous gossip.

Back to Kate, there's clearly been a small turn on her these past few months. From news of a feud with Camilla to stories like demanding Meghan sit at the back of the church (which she got backlash for and people were comparing Meghan to Rosa Parks), the story that one of her ancestors freed slaves (which got her so much hate that Karriet Tubman was trending on social media for days), the Windsor walkabout being the hardest thing she's ever done (coming from Jobson, who have been Charles' mouthpiece for decades), then the articles about one of her engagements stealing the limelight from Charles and Camilla, that weird Fox News article about her and William fighting and throwing things at each other, the articles about her parents' business,...

I'll keep watching but there's definitely been a small shift in the last few months

Not really, the news has always been mixed. They literally just report everything. Everything. Kate goes to Wimbledon = report. A friend of a friend of a friend says Kate and William are throwing things = report. Person thinks Camilla wears earrings better than Kate = report. A friend of Kate’s is asked whether she enjoyed walking around with people who publicly humiliated her and says “idk she probably found it quite hard” = report. Kate had a cute interaction with a kid = report. Kate ate a biscuit = report. Literally anyone loosely related says or does anything = report. It’s not a shift it’s business as usual.

Also the tabloids republish their old stories on a regular basis giving it a new timestamp to get fresh clicks for no extra work. Those stories are then often picked up again by the bot-run foreign ‘news’ sites as if it was new.

Here’s an example of an old story republished today about Kate

https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/royals/heartbroken-kate-middleton-left-in-23235005.amp

This was previously published in April, before that Feb.

Each time the republish gives it a new timestamp and gets it sent up to the top of search engines as a new story.

Same happens with Meghan.

They’ll be reprinting the ‘rights’ wedding row until Charlotte is a little old lady.

Heartbroken Kate 'was in tears' at palace after wedding secret was leaked

Kate Middleton and Prince William wanted every detail of their 2011 royal wedding to be perfect - but one of the main parts was leaked days before they said I Do

In quite a short period of time, the Sussex's have given a lifetime of ammunition for analysis and critique of their lives and perspectives, good and bad. They have fed the criticism and gossip with their expose's, which had phenomenal global audiences, and will be discussed and analysed for the rest of their days.

It does not matter if they are not heard of for a month, a year or ten years, they fed and nurtured the beast and no matter what happens in their life (or the life of H's immediate family), good or bad, they will always be intrinsically involved in any discussion or debate. Criticisms, comparisons and recalls will always be made, because of what they personally have put out there.

I feel it is naive to believe that by staying out of view it would be enough to shut down discussion on what they have said and done in the recent past.

There is no putting that genie back in the bottle at this stage.

How depressing. There are people on here who will be in nursing homes stabbing at their iPads and starting threads about them then even if it's old news 🤣

Your post sounds faintly threatening to be honest. Thank god they left. Hopefully they can avoid most of this.

Howsimplywonderful · 26/07/2023 19:51

I have a much happier view of them @Roussette

I think they are hIlarious .

From the give us a lift Joe, to the catastrophic car chase they make me smile a lot. The Bench was comedy gold too, looking forward to the next instalment

I hope they continue to inspire laughter wherever they go.

if anyone needs a laugh, i suggest the Harry Walker Bio

Roussette · 26/07/2023 19:55

Not sure that's much better?

Take the piss out of them and ridicule them...

These posts are beneficial to me to see, it sums up a lot of what I imagine posters' motives are...

Anyone would think they've committed the most heinous crimes imaginable.

Howsimplywonderful · 26/07/2023 20:03

For people of a certain age

These royals promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, If no one else can help and if you can find them. Maybe you can hire, The sussex Team (with a Netflix crew in tow)

themessygarden · 26/07/2023 20:14

"threatening"

😂😂😂LOL !!

Howsimplywonderful · 26/07/2023 20:30

It’s rather demeaning to think old people sit around in homes tapping on iPads.

not very nice at all.

When I’m old I expect the Sussex’s will be flogging a range of Diana inspired bracelets designed by Meghan on QVC
