I came across some old threads in other forums and also articles where Catherine was being criticized for being lazy, dumb, overrated, a gold digger and called all sorts of names. There were even threads that questioned why people disliked her so much, and multiple pages of replies stating why she was so disliked. I am wondering why this seems to have now been forgotten, even if Meghan became the new media target, why is it hardly mentioned the amount of hate and vitriol that Catherine went through?

I agree with you about Roussette and I didn't mean to be unpleasant. I've often posted here in her defence myself.
Maybe that's why that post stuck out to me.
I'm sorry to have caused any upset.

It’s rather demeaning to think old people sit around in homes tapping on iPads.

not very nice at all.

When I’m old I expect the Sussex’s will be flogging a range of Diana inspired bracelets designed by Meghan on QVC

This is an example of the double standard, though. The BRF flog all kinds of tat in the official Buckingham Palace Gift Shop (iirc the money goes to a fund that maintains their art collection and the decoration of their homes).

There have been soooo many accusations and people saying they bet Harry and Meghan will sell royal-themed merchandise (and tabloid articles acting like it's a serious possibility and being pearl clutching about it). but the actual royals have been selling every conceivable kind of overpriced sub-QVC tat for years. Aprons with the queen's face on, pyjamas with print of the imperial crown and corgis, cheap little necklaces with replicas of The Sovereign's Orb (which is misspelled on the website). All these supposedly almost sacred objects, plastered over costume jewellery and tote bags.

Anyone fancy a reusable water bottle with the Queen's face on for £9.99? Or a children's book featuring a cartoon version of Charles? Because the royals sell both of them.

The "elderly" comment was clearly about people who already spend all day tapping at iPads starting threads about them continuing to do so when they become old, not an ageist comment.

LaM how lovely for you, a GC! I live in hope
I have kept all the good DCs books and any GC I am blessed with will be stuck with those!

I think the opposite about the higher standards by the way. Smile I can't be arsed to advance search other posters' posts going back months and years! I read what is said on the day, and react to it. None of us always gets it right, it depends on how a post is worded, what you pick up from it, what's going on at the time etc.

i’ve kids and hate to see the shelves filled with kids books written by ‘celebrities’ I wish people with real writing skills got the chance.

I actually do agree with that. I have a few friends who are children's book authors and the overreliance on celebs (which are often ghost written, I don't think Meghan's was but celeb-written books for older kids usually are) is killing the industry. But it's a publishing industry problem that's widespread.

Yes its true, same with podcasts. I think though that theres a disproportionate focus on Meghan doing things so many others do. I have two friends who write and illustrate children's books, but one of them worked with a celeb to voice the audio for the book! I only listen to one podcast and its a science based thing, hubby listens to tech ones. The audience for celeb podcasts is dwindling I think. It seems everyone has one!

Howsimplywonderful · 27/07/2023 11:48

@AcesBaseballbat

i think the whole royal merchandise thing hilarious and some of the likenesses are very funny.

But shit sell

Suzanne Somers was a middling TV actress now worth 100m from selling a range of products in the health care area (thighmaster, books etc) if you’re not sniffy about the products

Roussette · 27/07/2023 11:48

@AcesBaseballbat

You ought to see the Highgrove shop! The prices are absolutely extortionate, and must be aimed at American tourists because I don't know what fool would spend £44 on a bottle of body lotion just because it has a Highgrove sticker on it with a crown above.

Or £150 on a bottle of 'Coronation whisky'.

To be fair, it does say all profits go to charity, I wouldn't mind a rundown on that.

Yes, thank you @LaMarschallin Smile

Howsimplywonderful · 27/07/2023 11:49

if you think that’s bad, head to a Catholic pilgrimage site. the pure tackiness is off the scale. At least the Highgrove shop has some Protestant restraint 🤣

LaMarschallin · 27/07/2023 11:55

Roussette

Thank you! Smile
It's really nice because DD had given up hope of any babies, so she and her DH threw a big party to celebrate significant birthdays and then, a couple of months before said party... it's a cliche, I know!

I see what you mean about posts. I suppose I do notice posts by particular names - you're a good example because you've not name changed (like me) - so I tend to react more to someone I think I "know".
If anything, my post was a sort of backhanded compliment because the post I mentioned stood out to me as unusual for you.

Roussette · 27/07/2023 11:58

Awww LaM wonderful for you!
You never know, never say never is my motto!

LaMarschallin · 27/07/2023 11:58

Thank you both very much!
Really kind of you Flowers

"Thats so interesting as a lot of people still remember Harry for his Nazi costume"

Not even the most rabid would actually think Harry was a Nazi sympathiser. Unlike the Duke of Windsor-who was.

So true - saw that Harry thread title and knew it was the OP before I even opened it 😂

Howsimplywonderful · 27/07/2023 12:26

@CurlewKate

It’s hard to escape a Nazi image as Harry has found out.

I never said he was a Nazi, but his idiotic decision has followed him and the photo is regularly published

LadyMuckingabout · 27/07/2023 12:31

I was just reading about the podcast celebrity thing. I think Meghan was a bit of a casualty: big organisations leaping on the bandwagon and expecting too much from people. The BBC has an ocean of podcasts - how can you possibly sort the wheat from the chaff?

Most podcasts fade away quietly when all content has been exhausted or the hosts can’t be bothered any more, but the end of Archetypes was very public.

Regarding children’s books - yes, the horror of celebrity efforts. Although I would also throw in “mummies” who worked in the publishing world and have the contacts (mates) to get their crappy “list” books published. So many of them in the library!

Roussette · 27/07/2023 12:45

I'd throw in self published books too! No publishing house would take them on, so they go ahead anyway and self publish.
My DD worked for a time at a self publishing house... she could not get over the appalling low standard of what was being made into books! looking at my cousin here...

CurlewKate · 27/07/2023 12:48

@Howsimplywonderful oh, I don't know- the Duke of Windsor appears to have escaped the Nazi stigma-and he actually was a Nazi sympathiser, not a ridiculous 20 year old posh boy going to an inappropriate party with other 20 year old posh boys.

Someone I know wrote a wonderful horror podcast (scripted fiction, not like true crime or someone pretending their house is haunted for a documentary) for the BBC and it didn't get renewed despite great reviews and decent ratings, because it got lost in the crowd.

upinaballoon · 27/07/2023 13:26

I have a tea-towel with QE2's face on it. I think it was bought at the time of her golden jubilee. I can't remember if it was a gift or not. I also have one with the face of Pope John-Paul 2nd on it, which was definitely a gift. I have little traumas when I lift them from the airing cupboard but I do 7 curtseys each time I use them so I am hoping for forgiveness at the END.

You have to imagine how many great writers are being turned down in favour of the big names!

LadyMuckingabout · 27/07/2023 14:57

To think Animal Farm was rejected - by TS Eliot! And of course Harry Potter and a million other popular and/or classic books.

Off the subject, but the worst genre is young adult. Unless the protagonist is someone who wouldn’t be out of place in Ripley’s Believe it or Not, forget it. Needless to say, I don’t think any kids read these books in spite of the determination of the publishers that they MUST like depressing ishoos.
